Paměti Přibíka a Jana Bukovanských Pintů z Bukovan
KOREŠ, František
2018 - Czech
Supported by historical and anthropological approaches of methodology, the thesis submitted endeavoured to point out the life histories of two almost unknown knights of the period before the Battle of White Mountain, Přibík Bukovanský Pinta z Bukovan and his son Jan. Its principal part consists of a critical edition of rarely preserved family memoirs, written by both noblemen in the 16th and the early 17th centuries. The unique testimony of personal character, supplemented by the message of their personal and official correspondence and other kinds of historical sources, rendered the author the basic heuristic starting point to becoming acquainted with both everyday and unusual experiences, ideas and manners of thinking in concrete representatives of two different generations of lower nobility of the period before the Battle of White Mountain. I focused my research, gradually conducted in accordance with the biographical method, on presenting the family and public lives of both knights, their wives and offspring. Apart from this, the questions of transformation of complex networks of social relationships, formation of family memory, the effects of war and perception of various cultural models, were also given appropriate attention. The author's intention was to present one of the possible manners to approach the social history of lower nobility of the period before the Battle of White Mountain. Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Přírodniny v učení o přírodě
PETR, Jan
2017 - Czech
Current state-of-the-art in the use of living things in primary science education has not been studied in detail in the Czech Republic. This thesis presents the paper published a short time ago and accompanied by the brief commentary. The aim is to evaluate data gained by the video-research of thirty (integrated) science classes and to give an analysis of the use of living things in selected science units. The paper has a character of case study containing not very large amount of lessons but it enables to describe the use of living things in the framework of selected thematic units in which the use of living things is possible or expectable. Keywords: Přírodniny; přírodovědné vzdělávání; videovýzkum; Living things; science education; video research Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Effect of low doses of herbicide paraquat on antioxidant defense in Drosophila
KORANDOVÁ, Michala
2016 - English
Disruption of cell equilibrium between production of free radicals and antioxidant defence is named oxidative stress. The main component of antioxidant mechanism is activity of antioxidant enzymes, which include superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. In this study we evaluated the effect of herbicide paraquat on response of SOD and catalase, their transcription level and locomotion activity in Drosophila melanogaster. We exposed the flies to a wide range of paraquat concentration. Our results revealed that transcript and enzymatic levels of both SOD and catalase have a similar biphasic dose response with the peaks at 2,5 ?M paraquat concentration, resembling hormetic effect. Then, males were more sensitive than females. However, females had an increased locomotion activity. We found that paraquat susceptibility is increased in males and mating flies. Therefore, this study supports hypothesis of stress sensitivity elevation as a physiological cost of reproduction. Measurement of in situ Phasporus Availability in Acidified Soils using Iron-Infused Resin soils.
ČAPEK, Petr
2016 - English
A hybrid anion resin was tested for in situ phosphorus (P) availability measurement in soils of two stands recovering from acidification and having different P-sorption characteristics. The phosphate (P-PO4) sorption capacity of the resin (before saturation) was 48 mol g-1. Sorption and elution were tested under P-PO4 concentrations common in acidic soils (0 0.42 mmol l-1) either with or without the presence of sulfate (0.2 mmol l-1). The efficiency of P-PO4 sorption was independent of the sulfate and was 100 +/- 0.2% (n = 56, +/- SD). The P-PO4 recovery stabilized after six elution steps (each: 50 ml of 0.5 M sodium hydroxide, resin/solution 5:1). The efficiency of P-PO4 recovery was 80 +/- 7% and was used to evaluate field measurements. We determined the amount of P-PO4 in the field using resin bags in three consecutive years. The results indicate that bioavailable P is negatively related to the soil ability to retain P. Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Predicting asp and pikeperch recruitment in a riverine redervoir.
BLABOLIL, Petr
2016 - English
Recruitment of two species, asp (Leuciscus aspius) and pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), in a riverine reservoir was studied using a novel statistical approach. Both species are piscivorous and are stocked into reservoirs for biomanipulative purposes to reduce planktivore species. Long-term data series were used, but the number of potential predictors was high. Therefore, a novel informative statistical approach based on dimension reduction methods was applied. Quality of outputs was driven by sampling methods. Main factors affecting asp recruitment were zooplankton abundance, predator density and temperature. In terms of pikeperch fry measured with seine and trawls, the number of predators was the only important factor. Gillnets underestimate small fish and the data were unsuitable for statistical modelling. Keywords: Sliced inversion regression; Stockrecruitment; Temperature; Water level fluctuations; Zooplankton Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

(Arbo)viruses in high European Arctic
ELSTEROVÁ, Jana
2016 - English
Since an ongoing climate change covers strongly the polar areas. Higher temperatures and related climate parameters bring the emergence of new parasites and their pathogens to higher latitudes. This may influence zoonotic diseases including arthropod-transmitted diseases. The tick species Ixodes uriae, parasitizing seabirds in the Arctic, may transmit many pathogens including various arboviruses, Borrelia spirochetes and Babesia apicomplexans. In the study we diagnosed 89 individuals of seabird tick Ixodes uriae and searched for arthropod-borne viruses from the genera Flavivirus, Alphavirus, Orthobunyavirus, Phlebovirus and Orbivirus using genus-specific primers. Moreover we searched for presence of Borrelia spp. and Babesia spp. DNA in the ticks. All samples were negative after PCR amplification for all tested pathogens. The result signalizes that tested pathogens might not be present in such high latitudes of European Arctic. Though, the possibility of introduction of these pathogens may be observable in near future due to quick changing of the Arctic ecosystem with the rising of migration of vertebrate hosts including humans to the polar areas. It is though important to continue to study potential presence of pathogens in polar areas. We are working on increase of the number of tick samples to confirm the presence or absence of the tick-borne pathogens in the European Arctic. Keywords: Arbovirus; Arctic; Polar Areas; Ixodes uriae; Tick-borne pathogen Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.
