Neznámé březinovské rukopisy ve fondu Jakuba Demla v LA PNP Praha
Iwashita, Daniela; Kořínková, Šárka
2019 - Czech
Téma a postava Otokara Březiny patří k ústředním konstantám celého Demlova díla. Básníkovy rukopisy o Březinovi však dosud nebyly probádány. Článek přibližuje výsledky výzkumu, v němž autorky v mylně označených a neuspořádaných osmi kartonech fondu Jakuba Demla v Literárním archivu PNP hledaly Demlovy texty o Otokaru Březinovi, identifikovaly je a rekonstruovaly. Otokar Březina, both as a man and a subject, belongs among the central constants of Deml’s entire work. In spite of this, however, Deml’s Březina-related manuscripts have not yet undergone proper examination. This article reports on the authors’ research into Deml’s texts on Březina which had to be retrieved, identified and reconstructed from eight mislabelled and disorganized boxes in the Jakub Deml fund in the Literary Archive of the MCL. The entire collection of manuscripts compiled includes two further boxes of material labelled as “fragments of My Testimony about Otokar Březina”. The authors therefore succeeded in assembling almost the entire manuscript of My Testimony (representing 97% of the approximately 1,000 numbered pages). Both the manuscript structure and parts of the typeset proofs testify to the gradual genesis of the book in four separate sections, and also throw light on the significance of certain changes (e.g. that the integrative as well as subversive part of the work – namely the marginal commentary – came into being only after the printing of the manuscript). Further, the authors managed to identify five bigger fragments of Deml’s unpublished lectures from the years 1929 to 1942. Above all, the article discusses the text of a lecture (59 preserved pages) given by Deml in Velké Meziříčí in 1929, which at the time caused considerable scandal and led to Deml being prosecuted for lèse-majesté against the then Czechoslovak President, until now it had been known only from secondary sources and citations. From the manuscript of the lecture it is clear that Deml had cited not only Březina’s criticism of Masaryk’s philosophy but also his praise of the President’s moral leadership while in office. At the same time the lecture represents the very first version of Deml’s conclusion to My Testimony about Otokar Březina. Two other significant fragments are: first, a fragment (83 preserved pages) of a three-hour lecture, given by Deml in Brno in 1931 and dealing with Otokar Březina’s life and philosophy, and, second, a fragment from 1942 which discusses, among other things, the significance of contradictory statements in Březina’s conversations and letters, which, according to Deml, Březina himself did not consider an integral part of his work. „Čas nestojí, kamaráde...” Vyprávěný a žitý čas v próze Terézy Novákové
Jedličková, Alice; Piorecká, Kateřina
2019 - Czech
The main topic in Teréza Nováková's prose work Děti čistého živého came to be the religious plurality of villages and solitary residences around Proseč. The author decided to follow the fortunes of a fairly large group of characters over several decades. Hence the literary critics described this work of fiction as a novel chronicle. The author was also induced to do this by her ethnographically erudite approach to descriptions of the environments and the usual activities of the characters speaking together in their authentic dialect. However, the author's intention was different, as testified by the initial outline of the work, the author's diary, the novel manuscript and personal correspondence. This is also confirmed by an analysis of the narrative structure: by developing a novel methodology based on objectivizing narration and bold time structure, Nováková succeeded in creating a novel on the individual forms of time lived under the burden of the irreversible, inexorable march of physical time. Keywords: narrative temporality; novel chronicle; writting process; summa; rization; scene; free indirect discourse Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Assessing the reliability of stress as a feature of authorship attribution in syllabic and accentual syllabic verse
Plecháč, Petr; Birnbaum, D. J.
2019 - English
This work builds on a recent study by one of the authors, which shows that statistics about versification may be used as a feature in the process of authorship attribution. One such statistic is what we have called the stress profile of a poem, a vector consisting of frequencies of stressed syllables at particular metrical positions. Our initial hypothesis was that because syllabic versification (SV) regulates by definition the number of syllables in a line but not the distribution of stresses, it allows authors to individualize their rhythmical style much more than accentual syllabic versification (ASV), where the distribution of stresses is primarily determined by meter. For that reason, we expected the stress profile to be a more reliable indicator of authorship in Spanish SV than in Czech or German ASV. This hypothesis, however, was not supported by our analysis. For most of our samples, German ASV had lower accuracy than Spanish, which we had predicted, but, contrary to our expectations, the accuracy for Czech ASV and Spanish SV were more or less the same. This result led us to hypothesize further that the traditional labels SV and ASV were misleading and we sought to measure the tonic entropy of our data. In this case, Spanish SV, as expected, was found to be the least tonically regular, while there was a significant difference between the two ASV systems: the values for Czech were even closer to Spanish than to the low-scoring German system. This explains why our initial grouping of Czech and German together into a single ASV category was insufficiently nuanced. Keywords: versification; authorship attribution; poetry Fulltext is available at external website.

Produkce modernity a časový hiát
Smyčka, Václav
2019 - Czech
The topic of this study is the emergence of the modern time regime during what is known as the Sattelzeit, i.e. the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries in the Central European context. This transformation in temporality is even thematized historically at the theoretical level as a topos of cultural studies using several material examples summarized within three chronological profiles. While the first part of the study focuses on criticism of the various ways to describe this transformation in historical temporality, the second part is meant to demonstrate the specific application of the approach developed by Reinhard Koselleck, and in particular by Aleida Assmann and Niklas Luhmann. These describe the transformation of the time regime as an attempt by society to create its own temporal structures by narrowing down the present in order to facilitate the operationalization of experience and expectations. A clearer division of experience into lived and expected, old and new, facilitates the selection of memory and likewise the selective formation of future action scenarios. However, this imposition of a time hiatus upon an ever narrowing present may only produce modernity at the expense of the present being perceived as an unstable, ever-fugitive point, which paradoxically does not offer sufficient space for action. Hence the present in the modern time regime is only perceived as a rapidly passing transitional period and a crisis between a transparent past and a clearly illuminated future. Material cross-sections through Czech history, journalism, philosophy of history and literature from the 1790s, the Napoleonic Wars and the end of the pre-1848 period are presented by the study as three stages in this process of the temporalization of the modern time regime. Melanchthonovo Rozmlouvání utěšené a potěšitedlné Pána Boha s Evou z roku 1557
Pišna, Jan
2019 - Czech
Příspěvek přináší informace o tisku Rozmlouvání utěšené a potěšitedlné Pána Boha s Evou vyhnanou z ráje a rodinou její, který přeložil táborský písař a konšel Pavel Lucín (1525-1597) a následně jej vydal roku 1557 u pražského tiskaře Jiřího Melantricha v Praze. Závěr příspěvku pojednává o typografii a ilustračním štočku s vyobrazením Boha s Adamem a Evou. The article disscusses the print of Rozmlouvání utěšené a potěšitedlné Pána Boha s Evou vyhnanou z Ráje a rodinou její (A very beautiful and pleasant dialogue between Our Lord and Eve expelled from Paradise as well as with her family) which was translated by the scribe and town councillor Pavel Lucín (1525-1597) from Tábor who later in 1557 had the work published by the Prague printer Jiří Melantrich. The text which Lucín chose as the basis for his translation was one of the editions of the Latin catechism by the Luteran theologian Lucas Lossius. At the end of Lossius' book the text Dialogus pius et festivus, de colloquio Deum (ut ferunt) et Evam was added, which drew inspiration from Melanchthon's Latin letter from the 23th March 1539 addressed to Johan IV., count of Wieda which had been printed several times that year. The final part of the article focuses on the typography and the block print illustration depicting God with Adam and Eve. Remarkable is also the connection of this deptiction with the initial N which is found in various version and stylistic variants of the Bibles printed by Netolický, Melantrich and Samuel Adam of Veleslavín. Středověká epika a problém původnosti v českém literárním dějepisectví v „dlouhém“ 19. století
Turek, Matouš
2019 - Czech
With special regard to the foregrounding of the issue of cultural transfer, the article traces two axioms of Czech literary historiography in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century – the figure of the Golden Age followed by decline as well as the ideal of originality and authenticity as a fundamental value criterion – and the development in their application onto medieval literature. With reference to synthetical works written by V. V. Haštalský, A. V. Šembera, Karel Tieftrunk and Jaroslav Vlček, the article demonstrates the ways in which the narrative of the decline of Old Czech epic, epitomized in the opposition between the Alexandreis and Tristram a Izalda, was gradually amplified and reaffirmed up until the 1880s, although the evaluation criteria were undergoing a paradigmatic shift. The binary category of originality and authenticity endures but is reinterpreted and recoded so that the opposition indigenous–foreign is superseded by oppositions drawn on the axes original–derivative, created–translated, authorial–anonymous. The syntheses written by Jaroslav Vlček, Arne Novák and Jan Jakubec at the turn of the century, already after the debunking of the allegedly autochthonous Dvůr Králové and Zelená hora manuscripts, present the multilingual nature of literary creativity in the Czech Lands in connection with Old Czech epic in a more positive light, rehabilitating in principle the realization of cultural transfer, although they do still utilize and further broaden the narrative of decline, rooted in the concept of monocultural fundaments of national literatures. Časnost romantiků. Poznámky k pojetí a figuraci času
Hrbata, Zdeněk
2019 - Czech
The intensive awareness or experience of time is one of the central topics of 19th century literature, particularly among authors considered Romantic. By way of several examples we focus on the poetry of these individuals (e.g. A. de Lamartine, V. Hugo and J. Vrchlický), whose work attempts to confront the irreversible course of time (the ancient, Virgilian subject: „fugit irreparabile tempus“, also dealt with by e.g. Petrarch and Pierre de Ronsard) by invoking and resurrecting the past, conserving and immortalizing the past, and with memories. For example, this penetrates the present of the subject and is involved in the creation of the continuum, when the passage of time, which in the Romantic conception of art is to be resisted by creation itself, does not necessarily entail disappearance and loss. In contrast to this we have Baudelaire's figures and the figure of time as the universal evil, the destructive enemy of the people provoking constant anxiety, the destroyer who cannot be eliminated, but who can, at least temporarily, be resisted by various forms of escape.
