The Koněprusy Caves: Depositional context of a human skeleton and the first radiocarbon dating
Svoboda, Jiří; Kuželka, V.; Vlček, E.
2003 - Czech
The Koněprusy caves in the Bohemian Karst represent a case of otherwise uninhabited underground system, where Upper Paleolithic human fossils were found in 1961 in a redeposited position, in the upper part or on the surface of a debris cone under vertical chimneys. Due to this situation, and with respect to the general archaeological and palaeontological context, Koněprusy were often compared to the site of Mladeč, Moravia, and the both depositions were intuitively dated to the Early Upper Paleolithic. Recent 14 C datings, however, confirmed an Aurignacian age for Mladeč only, whereas the date for Koněprusy suggets rather a Magdalenian age. New series of samples is actually being prepared in order to confirm this first dating. Finally, this paper discusses the term funeral caves. Koněpruské jeskyně v Českém krasu představují neosídlený podzemní systém, kde byly v roce 1961 objeveny lidské kosterní pozůstatky v redeponované poloze v suťovém kuželu pod vertikálním komínem. Současné radiokarbonové datování klade lidské pozůstatky do magdaleniénu. Článek rovněž diskutuje v obecné rovině problematiku tzv. funerálních jeskyní.

Hašek, Vladimír; Krajíc, R.
2003 - Czech
Archaeological excavation of Tržní náměstí (Market Square) in Tábor combined with an archaeogeophysical survey and prospect holes allowed the archaeologists to outline development of settlement in this part of Tábor from prehistory (Hallstatt Period) to industrialization (from 13th century buildings, walls, cultural layers, from 15th century new finds of the Hussite town - buildings, cultural layers, most of other relics date back to the Thirty Yers War - cultural layers, buildings). - počátky husitského města, zástavba, kulturní vrstvy a z období následujících s převahou reliktů staveb zaniklých za třicetileté války - kulturní vrstvy, zástavba).

Speleoarchaeology between the Karst and Pseudokarst
Svoboda, Jiří
2002 - Czech
This paper introduces two current projects dealing with prehistoric occupation of the karstic and pseudokarstic (sandstone) areas of the Czech Republic. The largest sets of (calibrated) C14 data are available for the Magdalenian and Mesolithic periods. Spatially, emphasis is concetrated on studies of the karstic and pseudokarstic areas as settlement systems. Additionally, this paper resumes the problems of methodology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and site protection.

Ivory wieghts from Předmostí and Pavlov
Svoboda, Jiří
2001 - Czech
As early as 1884, an object carved of mesial part of a mammoth tusk from Předmostí was described by J. Wankel, and interpreted by him as a weight. Obviously, the utility of such artefacts lies in their weight and in the fixation by fibrous cordage. A comparative study shows that between 30-15 ky, analogical objects appear repeatedly in various Gravettian phases and facies, as well as in Late Aurignacian (Pavlov, Willendorf, Alberndorf, Kostenki, Mezin). In order to approach more precisely their function within the technological system of these settlements, archaeological observations (the context, traces of damage from beating) and analogies (ethnoarchaeology, experimental archaeology) are applied. These methods suggest a variety of alternatives, but none of them is proved unequivocally. Even if the approach of this paper is preferentially functional and technological, an additional symbolic meaning of some of these objects (cf. their anthropomorph "heads") should not be neglected a priori. K bližšímu poznání jejich funkce v technologickém systému těchto sídlišť aplikujeme archeologická pozorování (kontext, stopy úderů) a analogie (etnoarcheologie, experimentální archeologie). Tyto přístupy sice naznačují celé spektrum alternativ, aniž by ovšem některou přímo dokázaly.

Geological Survey and Archaeogeophysical Prospection at Historical Silver Mining Sites Located in Routes of Linear Buildings in the Czech Republic
Hašek, Vladimír; Krajíc, R.; Ondra, K.
2001 - Czech
Projected roads in the Czech Republic often cross areas affected by previous intensive mining of precious metals (gold, silver), the ground and underground mining has left behing a range of relics in form of various morphological depressions, occasionally folloved by relict of other objects linked to mining. In order to prevent emergence situations a complex of geophysical methods and drilling works is employed. This complex is an integral part of both geological research and rescue archeological research in these region. In order to demonstrate the practical usage of the disciplines mentioned above, we describe the prospection of highway route D between Mezno and Chotoviny in Tábor district, and ringroad I/38 in Jihlava. Projektované silnice v České republice často procházejí oblastmi ovlivněnými předchozí intenzivní těžbou drahých kovů (zlata a stříbra).
