Elements' bioaccessibility and oxidative potential of urban aerosol
Cigánková, Hana; Mikuška, Pavel; Hegrová, J.
2022 - Czech
Atmospheric aerosols (Particulate Matter, PM) have significant impact on health and environment. The ability of aerosol to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the widely proposed mechanisms related to the negative effects of aerosol on human health. Oxidative stress, caused by the production of ROS, is associated with several cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.\nThe capacity of aerosol to produce ROS is also called oxidative potential (OP). Although ROS generation capacity of PM exhibits a good correlation with PM mass concentration, it may depend more on physico-chemical properties of PM. Elements bound to PM play a significant role in contributing to the OP of aerosol. Exposure to elements was linked with several health issues (e.g. respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma, inflammatory effects, lung cancer). Expozice prvkům bývá spojena s několika zdravotními problémy (např. respirační a kardiovaskulární onemocnění, astma, zánětlivé procesy, rakovina plic).

Organic compounds and markers from wood combustion in boilers used for household heating
Křůmal, Kamil; Mikuška, Pavel; Horák, J.; Jaroch, M.; Hopan, F.; Kuboňová, L.
2022 - Czech
Organic compounds (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and organic markers (monosaccharide anhydrides, diterpenoids) used for the identification of aerosol emission sources were measured in the emissions from the combustion of hard and soft wood. Wood was combusted in different boilers used for the residential heating in the Czech Republic, i.e., overfire boiler, boiler with down-draft combustion, gasification boiler and automatic boiler. Emission factors of particles and all measured organic compounds were the highest from the combustion of fuels in the oldest (overfire) boiler. V emisích ze spalování tvrdého a měkkého dřeva byly měřeny organické sloučeniny (polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky) a organické markery (monosacharidové anhydridy, diterpenoidy) používané pro identifikaci zdrojů emisí aerosolů. Dřevo bylo spalováno v různých kotlích používaných k vytápění bytů v České republice, tj. v protápěcím kotli, kotli s tahem spalování, zplyňovacím kotli a automatickém kotli. Emisní faktory částic a všech měřených organických sloučenin byly nejvyšší ze spalování paliv v nejstarším (přehořívacím) kotli.

Nanospray processing of silver nanoparticles for formation of dried deposits

2021 - English
Nanospray transfers liquid into an aerosol via electrostatic forces created between an emitter and a counter electrode. Herein, we present compact laboratory-made instrumentation for nanospray-processing of silver colloid. The instrumentation is based on the pressurized polysulfone chamber fixing a disposable vial with an immersed platinum electrode and a long fused silica capillary supplying the sprayed liquid to the emitter. The combination of low flow rates (70 nL/min) with a sharp emitter, fabricated on a 3D printed grinding station, resulted in a fine aerosol. The low volume of released droplets allowed full evaporation of water during their flight towards the counter electrode without any need for drying gas or the addition of volatile solvents. The constructed device was successfully used for the deposition of water-free silver colloid without any requirement of its pretreatment. The deposition of completely dried nanoparticles on planar substrates eliminated undesirable coffee ring effect and deposits of increased homogeneity could be obtained. Electron microscopy confirmed no significant changes in the character of nanospray-processed nanoparticles. Finally, we also investigated several approaches for the improvement of the surface density of nanoparticles on the substrate at preserved time scale.
