Dendrochronology improves understanding of the charcoal production history, increasing the tourist potential in the Drahany Highlands

Over the last two years, three selected forest sites from Drahany Highlands were examined for traces of human activity. The most frequent traces found, and common to all three sites, were remains of charcoal production. This paper provides an anatomical and dendrochronological analysis of the charcoals found in two charcoal pile remains from each site. The species composition of the charcoals at the southern site was dominated by oak, followed by birch and hornbeam. Fir was more common than oak, beech, poplar, birch and hornbeam at the central site. Fir and beech were found at the northern site. By using dendrochronology, 23 fir, oak and beech charcoals were dated with the oldest sample coming from a central site and dated from the period 1753–1758. Charcoals from the three other charcoal piles fell into the first half of the 19th century. Radiocarbon dating of charcoals selected gave a very wide age range (1640–1955), except for one case (1399–1435). Providing information on the age of a charcoal pile can help raise public awareness and interest in viewing the sites where charcoal burners used to be active in the forests.

Adaptace na změnu klimatu: postup pro hodnocení zranitelnosti města vůči teplotním extrémům

Metodika je zaměřena na oblast integrovaného modelování dopadů změny klimatu na socio-ekologické systémy měst a metodický postup pro hodnocení zranitelnosti měst vůči teplotním extrémům. Současné přístupy jsou často realizována na základě nedostatečných dat a jako proměnlivé se uvažuje pouze klima, zatímco stav zástavby a rozložení populace v prostoru jsou vnímány jako konstantní. Tato metodika přináší nový, ucelený pohled na tvorbu scénářů zranitelnosti měst vůči teplotním extrémům, který je založen na syntéze dat vzniklých prostorovým modelováním a participativními přístupy. Představuje návod, jak postupovat v případě analýzy zranitelnosti měst na úrovní místního měřítka a v rozsahu města jako celku, a to s ohledem na budoucí projekce změny klimatu, scénáře změn využití území a půdního pokryvu a socio-demografického vývoje měst do roku 2050. Výstupy vzniklé na základě metodiky jsou nástrojem adaptačního plánování pro identifikaci lokalit ohrožených teplotním stresem v současnosti a v budoucnosti. The methodology is focused on integrated modelling of climate change impacts on social-ecological systems in cities and on the methodological approach to vulnerability assessment of heatwaves and extreme heat at local and city scales. Recent approaches are often based on insufficient data where land use, land cover and distribution of population in space are considered as constant. This methodology then presents a complex approach to scenario building of future vulnerability of cities to heatwaves and extreme heat, that is based on data synthesis originating from spatial modelling and participatory processes. To this end, the methodology elaborates on the aspects of climate modelling, land use and land cover scenarios development and socio-demographic scenarios until the year 2050. The outcomes of the application of the methodology are a significant tool for urban adaptation planning in terms of adaptation measures allocation to the areas with recent and future sensibility to heat stress.

In this study, EC and OC at 4 m elevation and EC at 230 m elevation showed a similar \nseasonal pattern with higher values in winter and lower values in summer. OC, measured \nat 230 m height showed an opposite behavior with slightly higher values in spring and \nsummer, probably related to the increased contribution of secondary organic carbon \n(SOC). Concentrations were generally higher at 4 m, where there was also a better \ncorrelation between EC and OC, suggesting a greater influence of local sources near the \nsurface.
