A Critical Review of Literature Discussing Gender Correctness in the English and Czech Languages

2023 - English Tato práce se zabývá komplexním zkoumáním genderové korektnosti v anglické a české lingvistické literatuře, přičemž analyzuje a porovnává pohledy jednotlivých publikací. Na základě proniknutí do hlavních témat a relevantních otázek souvisejících s tímto tématem studie představuje nejen různorodou škálu perspektiv přítomných v odborných pracích, ale také roli genderové korektnosti na rovnost v jazyce. Práce vymezuje klíčové pojmy genderové korektnosti a její význam pro moderní společnost. Po srovnání perspektiv různých publikací představuje kritický pohled na současný stav literatury o genderové korektnosti. Představuje tak nejen současný pohled na genderovou korektnost, ale také její omezení a rezervy. Přináší také možné podněty pro budoucí práci na toto téma. Celkově tak poskytuje dobrý vhled do diskurzu genderové korektnosti. This thesis deals with a comprehensive examination of gender correctness in the English and Czech linguistic literature, analysing and comparing the perspectives of individual publications. By delving into the main themes and relevant issues related to this topic, the study presents not only the diverse range of perspectives present in scholarly works but also the role of gender correctness on equality in language. The paper defines the key concepts of gender correctness and its relevance to modern society. After comparing the perspectives of different publications, it presents a critical look at the current state of the literature on gender correctness. Thus, it presents not only the current view of gender correctness but also its limitations and gaps. It also provides possible suggestions for future work on the topic. Altogether, it provides a good insight into the discourse of gender correctness. Přízvuk a redukce nepřízvučných slabik u českých uživatelů angličtiny: britská vs. americká angličtina

2023 - English Diplomová práce se zabývá schopností českých uživatelů angličtiny rozpoznávat rozdíly v přízvuku britské a americké angličtiny a tím, do jaké míry se tato jejich schopnost promítá do jejich vlastní výslovnosti. V první části práce tedy určuji a popisuji hlavní odlišnosti v umístění přízvuku a jeho vlivu na výslovnost v obou těchto regionálních standardů. Ve druhé části jsou nejprve shromážděna data získaná od účastníků výzkumu prostřednictvím rozhovoru, nahrávky čtení krátkého textu obsahujícího zkoumané jevy, a dotazníku k nahrávkám rodilých mluvčích užívajících výše zmíněné standardy. Tato data jsou následně kvantitativně vyhodnocena. Dotazník ohledně rozdílů ve výslovnosti přízvuku mezi britskou a americkou angličtinou také posílám náhodně vybranému vzorku Čechů a zkoumám míru jejich znalosti daného jevu. Závěrem práce je praktické doporučení pro výuku výslovnosti angličtiny v České republice a uvedení možností dalšího rozšíření práce. This Diploma thesis studies the ability of Czech users of English to distinguish stress-related pronunciation aspects of British and American English, and to utilize this in their own speech. In the first part, therefore, I identify and describe the most prominent differences in the two regional standards. In the second part, after working with Czech participants using a dialogue, a prepared text and questionnaires about recordings of native British and American speakers, I present findings on the variables explored. I also study the general awareness in Czech users of English of the stress-related pronunciation differences between British and American English by means of a questionnaire sent to randomly chosen Czech natives. The conclusions of this thesis serve as practical recommendations for the teaching of English pronunciation in Czech schools, and suggest possible ways of broadening the thesis. STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS IN THOMAS HARDY'S NOVELS

2023 - English Bakalářská práce se zabývá postavením žen ve Viktoriánské době, konkrétně ve fikci Thomase Hardyho. Cílem práce je analyzovat a charakterizovat Hardyho hrdinky, které navzdory zavedeným Viktoriánským společenským normám, vyčnívaly z davu. Thomas Hardy poukázal na problémy tykající se žen, které byly v té době převážně přehlíženy. Porovnáním hrdinek s tradičním představou viktoriánských žen, odhalíme jejich odlišnosti. Základem této práce je analýza tří ženských románů a jejich protagonistek - Bathsheby Everdenové z Daleko od hlučícího davu (1874), Eustacie Vyeové z Rodákova návratu (1878) a Tess Durbeyfieldové z Tess z D'Urbervillů (1891). První kapitola se bude soustředit na popis Viktoriánského období a jeho společnosti, obzvláště žen a jejich status v patriarchální společnosti. Následující kapitoly se budou věnovat již zmíněným ženským postavám, jejich modernímu smýšlení a pokusům vzdorovat Viktoriánským ideálům. Tyto ženy čelily tradičním genderovým rolím Viktoriánské společnosti a usilovaly o zrovnoprávnění. The bachelor thesis focuses on the position of women in the Victorian Era, concretely found in the fiction of Thomas Hardy. The principle of this work is to analyse and characterise Hardy's heroines who, in defiance of the established Victorian social standards, stand out in a crowd. Thomas Hardy brought the female-related issues, at the time mostly overlooked, into focus. We reveal the dissimilarity of the heroines by comparing them to the traditional Victorian portrayal of women. The core of the thesis is the analysis of three feminine-centred novels with their protagonists - Bathsheba Everdene from Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), Eustacia Vye from The Return of the Native (1878) and Tess Durbeyfield from Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891). The first chapter centres on the description of the Victorian era and its society, especially women and their status in a patriarchal society. The following chapters will be devoted to the above-mentioned female characters and their modern mindsets and attempts to defy the Victorian ideal. These women face the traditional gender roles of Victorian society and struggle for emancipation. 2023 - English Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje především na vývoj a evoluci fantastických prvků v moderní fantasy literatuře, přičemž jako kritický příklad slouží Hobit od J. R. R. Tolkiena. Jak je všeobecně známo, literatura je dynamická a vyvíjející se umělecká forma utvářená různými vnitřními i vnějšími faktory. Cílem této práce je prostřednictvím pečlivé analýzy vybraných příkladů fantasy prvků prozkoumat a ilustrovat změny, k nimž v tomto žánru v průběhu času došlo, a zároveň je porovnat se základními aspekty klasické fantasy literatury. V konečném důsledku chce tato studie přispět k hlubšímu pochopení žánru fantasy a jeho vývoje a osvětlit způsoby, jakými se měnil a zároveň zůstával věrný svým kořenům. The primary focus of this Bachelor thesis is to examine the development and evolution of fantastical elements in modern fantasy literature, with The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien serving as a critical example. As is widely recognized, literature is a dynamic and evolving art form shaped by various internal and external factors. Through careful analysis of selected examples of fantasy elements, this thesis aims to explore and illustrate the changes that have occurred in the genre over time while also comparing and contrasting them with the foundational aspects of classic fantasy literature. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the fantasy genre and its evolution, shedding light on the ways in which it has both changed and remained true to its roots. Ukrainian Migration and Integration in the Czech Republic in the pre-and post-Maidan Era: Immigrant vs Refugee

2023 - English Ukrajinská migrace je tématem, které je v centru pozornosti zejména v posledních několika letech. Téměř nechtěnou pozornost vzrůstající migrační vlně přinesl především vojenský konflikt vyvolaný Ruskem, v jehož důsledku z Ukrajiny prchají statisíce uprchlíků především do střední Evropy. Ukrajinská migrace však není tématem pouze 21. století. Mám pocit, jako by veřejnost ne zcela chápala zásadní rozdíl mezi migrantem a uprchlíkem. Tyto pojmy jsou pro většinu a média často snadno zaměnitelné. Oba však mají velmi odlišné zkušenosti. Počínaje počátečním rozhodnutím opustit zemi, konče integrací a dokonce i představou sounáležitosti. Identity migrantů a uprchlíků se utvářejí velmi odlišně. Během svého výzkumu jsem zjistil, že literatura týkající se rozdílů mezi nimi není příliš rozšířená ani populární a mediální pokrytí téměř neexistuje. Zdá se, že kromě několika nevládních organizací, které poskytují jakýsi návod, jak se "poprvé setkat s uprchlíkem a migrantem", není na toto téma kladen téměř žádný důraz. Dále je důležité zmínit, že sami migranti a uprchlíci vidí rozdíl a cítí tuto propast v porozumění mezi oběma skupinami. Ukrajinské komunity, které se v České republice v průběhu let již vytvořily, mají s uprchlíky z Ukrajiny jen velmi málo společného, pokud jde o jejich osobní zkušenosti, a i když by se mohlo zdát, že uprchlíci budou tíhnout k ukrajinsky mluvící menšině v České republice, není tomu tak vždy. Cílem práce je analyzovat problémy, ale také pomoc, které se ukrajinským imigrantům a uprchlíkům dostává po jejich příchodu do České republiky. Práce se také zaměřuje na vysvětlení posunu v migraci v souvislosti s historickými a současnými událostmi na Ukrajině a zaměřuje se na srovnání zkušeností imigrantů a uprchlíků. Práce se bude zabývat dvěma migračními obdobími. První z nich na konci 90. let 20. století se zaměřuje na měnovou reformu jako na faktor, který podnítil potřebu ze země vycestovat. Tato část se zaměřuje především na boj běžných ukrajinských občanů s ekonomickou krizí, přičemž se soustředí hlavně na oblast Bukoviny, neboť ta byla domovským regionem účastníků mého výzkumu. Důvodem pro zaměření na region Bukovina byla také společná historie s Českou republikou a také moje obeznámenost s touto oblastí, protože jsem zde strávil více než polovinu svého života. Druhá část se zabývá uprchlickou krizí způsobenou nevyprovokovanou invazí Ruska na Ukrajinu. Celkovým podtržením celé práce bude rozlišení migrace a integrace uprchlíků a migrantů. Můj výzkum mi ukázal jasné rozdíly mezi zkušenostmi migrantů a uprchlíků. Ukázal také, jak migranti prožívají, když ze zahraničí sledují, jak Ukrajina v průběhu času prochází obtížnými změnami. Tento pocit, často popisovaný jako bezmoc, byl častým pocit, který spolu sdílela valná většina respondentů, kteří dožívají své životy za hranicemi Ukrajiny. Pocit sounáležitosti s českou společností se jim však dostavuje častěji než pocit sounáležitosti s ukrajinskou společností. Pocit "ukrajinskosti" často vyvolaly události na Ukrajině, které jakoby vyzývají k jednotě, tj. volby, sportovní turnaje, protesty, válka. Cílem závěru práce je uvést souvislosti, které se skrývají za slovy "migrant" a "uprchlík". Často se zdá, že lidé zapomínají, že uprchlík je někdo, kdo opustil svůj život, a pak mají ve tváři výraz překvapení, když je uprchlíkem jen normální člověk s drahým autem, místo dítěte v roztrhaném oblečení a s dírami po kulkách v batohu. Ukrainian migration has been a topic under the spotlight, especially in the past few years. The almost unwanted attention to the increasing migration wave was brought mainly by the military conflict created by Russia resulting in hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing Ukraine mainly to central Europe. Ukrainian migration is however not a topic of 21 first century. I feel as if the public does not fully grasp the crucial difference between a migrant and a refugee. The terms are for the majority and media are often easily interchangeable. The two have however very different experiences. Starting from the initial decision to leave the country, ending with integration and even the idea of belonging. Migrant identities and refugee identities are formed very differently. During my research, I have found that literature regarding the differences between the two is not very common or popular and the media coverage is almost non-existent. Apart from a few NGOs that give somewhat of a guide as to how to have a "first encounter with a refugee and a migrant" there seems to be almost no emphasis on the topic. , Further, it is important to mention that the migrants and refugees themselves see the difference and can feel this gap of understanding between both groups. Ukrainian communities that have already formed in the Czech Republic over the years have very little in common with refugees from Ukraine when it comes to their personal experiences and although it may seem that refugees would gravitate towards the Ukrainian-speaking minority in the Czech Republic, it is not always the case. The thesis aims to analyze the challenges but also the help that Ukrainian immigrants and refugees receive upon their arrival to the Czech Republic. The thesis also focuses on explaining the shift in migration related to historical and current events in Ukraine and focuses on comparing the experiences of immigrants to the ones of refugees. The thesis will cover two migration periods. The first one in the late 1990s focused on monetary reform as a push factor for leaving the country. This part focuses primarily on the struggles of everyday Ukrainian citizens with the economic crisis mainly focusing on the Bukovina region as that was the home region of the participants in my research. The reason for the focus on the Bukovina region was also caused by the common history with the Czech Republic and also my familiarity with the area as that is where I spent over half of my life growing up. The second part covers the refugee crisis caused by the unprovoked invasion by Russia to Ukraine. The overall underline of the whole thesis will be the distinction between the migration and integration of refugees and migrants. My research showed me clear differences between the experiences of migrants and refugees. It also showed how migrants experience watching Ukraine go through difficult changes over time from abroad. This feeling often described as helplessness was a common nominator to the refugees spending the rest of their lives abroad. The feeling of belonging to the Czech society comes however to them more often than the feeling of belonging to the Ukrainian one. Feeling "Ukrainian" would often be triggered by events in Ukraine that sort of call for unity i.e. elections, sports tournaments, protests, and war. The aim of concluding the thesis is to provide the context behind the words "migrant" and "refugee". Often than not people seem to forget that a refugee is someone that has left their life behind and then have an expression of surprise on their face when a refugee is just a normal person with an expensive car, instead a child in ripped clothes and bullet holes in their backpack. The suffix -ly is often considered to be primarily adverbial. The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to revise that hypothesis through corpus-based research. Na příkladech z děl současného autora D. Walliamse se práce bude zabývat tématy, motivy a způsobem vyprávění autora humorné dětské prózy v porovnání s literárním odkazem děl Roalda Dahla. Pozornost se soustředí na formu literární grotesky a nadsázky, která v kontextu tvorby pro dětské čtenáře otevírá kontroverzní témata v případě obou uvedených autorů. Through a comparative analysis of the prosaic work of two British authors of children's literature, the bachelor thesis will attempt to describe the dynamics of the development of literary works for children's readers in the context of British fantasy literature. By way of examples from works of the contemporary author David Walliams, the thesis will deal with themes, motifs and manner of narration of the author of humorous children's prose in comparison with the literary legacy of works of Roald Dahl. The thesis focuses its attention on the form of literary grotesque and hyperbole, which in the context of works for children's readers opens up controversial themes in the case of both mentioned authors. Předmětem analýzy jsou romány The Grandissimes od George W. Cablea, The Awakening od Kate Chopinové a Catherine Carmier od Ernesta J. Gainese. Práce začíná souhrnným historickým a kulturním kontextem Louisiany, zdůrazňujícím postavení žen, rasové, etnické a náboženské vlivy. Poté je každý z autorů zkoumám jednotlivě včetně svého života, literární kariéry a hlavních témat, kterým se ve svém díle věnuje. Speciální pozornost je věnována významným ženským postavám, s důrazem na jejich roli v ději, individuální příběhy, motivace, kulturní, náboženský a společenský kontext. Porovnáním společných a odlišných znaků těchto ženských postav, které sdílejí francouzský původ a katolickou víru, si práce klade za cíl zlepšit pochopení reprezentace žen v louisianské literatuře. Abstract This thesis examines the portrayal of women in three distinct novels set in different historical periods within the State of Louisiana. The novels under analysis are The Grandissimes by George W. Cable, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and Catherine Carmier by Ernest J. Gaines. The thesis begins by providing a comprehensive historical and cultural background of Louisiana, focusing on the treatment of women, and highlighting racial, ethnic, and religious influences. Each author is then individually examined along with their life, literary career, and the central themes they explore. Special attention is given to the prominent female characters in each work, with an emphasis on their individual stories, cultural and social contexts, and roles within the narrative. By comparing the portrayals of these female characters, who share French ancestry and the Catholic faith, the thesis aims to enhance understanding of the representation of women in Louisiana literature.
