Identifying the materials in archaeological textiles

Given their organic origin, textiles rank among the rarest archaeological finds. While the vast majority of these artefacts are preserved as small fragments or mineralised remnants, their detailed textile technology study provides interesting and important information about the use of textile techniques and the quality of processing. The most important information concerns the utilised textile materials, but for degraded textiles, these materials are among the most difficult information to obtain. Image analysis using electron microscopy (SEM) is a significant aide in this pursuit.

Dálkový průzkum a jeho proměny v oblasti detekce a mapování archeologického dědictví

Současný dynamický vývoj dálkového průzkumu Země významně obohacuje také archeologický výzkum pravěkého a historického osídlení z výšky, a to především v heuristice (detekce a fotografická dokumentace dosud neevidovaných ploch s nemovitými archeologickými prameny v případě aktivního přístupu, analýzy a interpretace leteckých měřických snímků a družicových dat v případě využívání na internetu veřejně dostupných ortofotomap) a v navazujícím mapování a tvorbě plánů nově identifikovaných dokladů minulých sídelních aktivit. Příspěvek přináší stručný přehled o technických inovacích a možnostech v obou uvedených krocích výzkumného procesu a informuje o tom, jak je v pražském Archeologickém ústavu AV ČR v současnosti realizováno zpracování leteckých fotografií (pořizovaných v letech 1992–2016 během aktivního leteckého průzkumu) do podoby digitálních ortorektifikovaných a georeferencovaných map (plošně rozsáhlá území se stopami minulých sídelních aktivit zviditelněných převážně prostřednictvím nepřímých – vegetačních – indikátorů) a podrobných plánů jednotlivých lokalit (tj. kumulací zahloubených antropogenních objektů pravěkého a historického původu na malém prostoru). The dynamic development of remote sensing today also significantly enriches the archaeological investigation of prehistoric and historical settlement from above, especially within a heuristic approach (detection and photographic documentation of as yet unregistered areas with archaeological sources in the case of targeted aerial prospection, analysis and interpretation of orthophotographs and satellite data in the case of the use of orthophotomaps publicly available on the internet) and in the subsequent mapping and creation of plans of newly identified evidence of past settlement activities. The article provides a brief overview of technical innovations and possibilities in both mentioned steps of the research process and describes how the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences is currently processing aerial photographs (taken in 1992–2016 during aerial survey campaigns) into digital orthorectified and georeferenced maps (large areas with traces of past settlement activities visible mainly through indirect vegetation indicators) and detailed plans of individual sites, i.e., accumulations of buried anthropogenic features of prehistoric and historical origin in a small area.

Archeolog Jan Eisner působil na Slovensku 20 let (1919-1939). Vedl mnoho záchranných a systematických terénních výzkumů a věnoval velkou pozornost ochraně památek na Slovensku. Je považován za učitele první generace slovenských archeologů. Archaeologist Jan Eisner was working in Slovakia for 20 years (1919-1939). He led many rescue and systematic field researches and turned great attention to the protection of monuments in Slovakia. He is considered to have been a teacher of the first generation of Slovak archaeologists.

Třicet šest let výzkumu městských hradeb v Chrudimi

Archeologický výzkum doložil v Chrudimi vznik opevnění ve 2. pol. 13. století. Prokázal existenci plných půlválcových věžic zpevňujících městskou hradbu a dokumentoval existenci městského hradu. Pozornost byla věnována parkánové hradbě a baště Prachárna. Nově byly identifikovány pozůstatky opevnění předměstí. Archaeological research has documented the creation of fortifications in Chrudim in the second half of the 13th century. It proved the existence of half-cylindrical towers strengthening the city wall and documented the existence of the city castle. Attention was paid to the bailey walls and the 'Prachárna' bastion. Remains of suburban fortifications were newly identified.

Eine Zusammenfassung der Funde mittelalterlicher Funde von bunten Perlen aus Böhmen, einschließlich des grundlegenden typologischen Schemas, das auf dem Inventar dieser Perlen beruht. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird Perlen mit einfachen und besonders Millefiori-Augen in Kombination mit Kreuzfaden geschenkt. Die unterschiedliche chemische Zusammensetzung der Gläser beider Arten von Perlen, wie sie durch die SEM-EDS-Methode bestimmt wird, kann auf verschiedene Produktionszentren hinweisen. Die Topographie der mitteleuropäischen Funde deutet darauf hin, dass diese Perlen aus dem Karpatenbecken nach Böhmen gelangt sind, das der Vermittler kultureller Einflüsse aus Süd- und Osteuropa war. A summary of the findings of early medieval finds of polychrome beads from Bohemia, including the basic typological scheme based on the inventory of these beads. Special attention is paid to beads with simple and especially millefiori eyes in combination with crossing trails. The different chemical composition of glasses of both types of beads, as determined by the SEM-EDS method, may indicate different production centers. The topography of Central European findings suggests that these beads have spread to Bohemia from the Carpathian basin, which has been the mediator of cultural influence from Southern and Eastern Europe.
