One thousand and fifty years of the Bishopric of Prague

The book is dedicated to the 1050th anniversary of the foundation of the Prague bishopric. The first block of studies places the topic of the first Czech diocese in the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, the related ecclesiastical institutions and the Christianization processes in their individual parts, e.g. among the Polabian Slavs. The second block of texts traces the processes leading to the building of the foundations of the Bohemian diocese, its establishment and its continuity with the Great Moravian ecclesiastical beginnings. Equally important are the probes tracing the process of Christianization of Czech society, the relationship between the Prague bishops and the Czech ruler, and the emergence of church organization. The book concludes with studies tracing the Czech and Moravian bishoprics at the turning points of the Hussite and Reformation periods, the Recatholization and the reforms of Joseph II. Kniha věnovaná 1050. výročí založení pražského biskupství. První blok studií zasazuje téma první české diecéze do středoevropských souvislostí karolínské a otonské říše, souvisejících církevních institucí a christianizačních procesů v jejich jednotlivých částech, např. u Polabských Slovanů. Druhý blok textů sleduje procesy směřující k budování základů české diecéze, jejího založení a ke sledování její návaznosti na velkomoravské církevní začátky. Neméně důležité jsou sondy sledující proces christianizace české společnosti, vztah pražských biskupů a českého panovníka i vznik církevní organizace. Knihu uzavírají studie sledující česká a moravská biskupství ve zlomových dobách husitství a reformace, rekatolizace a v době reforem Josefa II.

In the context of the 1050th anniversary of the founding of the Prague bishopric, the study focuses on the topic of the first Czech diocese and places it in the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, related ecclesiastical institutions and Christianization processes. In the form of a probe, it traces the importance of the mission for the establishment of the Prague bishopric. In this context, it discusses issues related to sacred architecture, liturgical equipment and written culture inseparably linked to the new Christian education and church administration. Studie se věnuje v souvislosti s výročím 1050 let od založení pražského biskupství tématu první české diecéze a zasazuje ji do středoevropských souvislostí karolínské a otonské říše, souvisejících církevních institucí a christianizačních procesů. Formou sondy sleduje význam misie pro vznik pražského biskupství. V této souvislosti pojednává otázky spojené se sakrální architekturou, liturgickou výbavu a písemnou kulturo neoddělitelně spjatou s novou křesťanskou vzdělaností i s církevní správou.

The paper mainly deals with literary metaphorizations of the Christian temple in three basic typologies of the temple, as metaphors of the human body, a prefigurative pattern of the history of Solomon’s temple transferred to the history of church communities and the metaphor of knowledge. In any religion, the temple is not just a place for believers to gather, it has always been understood as a transcendent gate connecting the created world and God’s presence. It represented the “center of the world” and gradually took on various typological and metaphorical realizations: Solomon’s temple, the heavenly Jerusalem, the divine circle, whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. This led to the fulfillment of various dispositions. On the other hand, remarkable practices are also present in the literature of the 17th and 18th centuries, interpreting the temple in the opposite way, namely as an anthropomorphic metaphor of the human body, most prominently in the case of J.F. Beckovský. Příspěvek se zabývá zejména literárními metaforizacemi křesťanského chrámu ve třech základních typologiích chrámu, a to jako metafory lidského těla, prefigurativního vzoru dějin Šalomounova chrámu přenášeným na dějiny církevních obcí a metaforou vědění. Chrám není v žádném náboženství jen místo shromáždění věřících, odjakživa byl chápán jako transcendentní brána spojující stvořený svět a Boží přítomnost. Reprezentoval „střed světa“ a postupně přebíral různé typologické a metaforické realizace: Šalamounova chrámu, nebeského Jeruzaléma, božského kruhu, jehož střed je všude a obvod nikde aj. To vedlo k naplňování různých dispozic. Na druhou stranu jsou ale také v literatuře 17. a 18. století přítomné pozoruhodné postupy, interpretující chrám obráceně, totiž jako antropomorfní metaforu lidského těla, nejvýraznějším způsobem u J. F. Beckovského.

The author argues in favor of taking social studies of science into account in secondary school teaching. He points out that teachers may venture into the area of sociology of science (which is often empirically grounded in physics) without necessarily moving away from the content of scientific knowledge they wish to communicate to their students. Autor příspěvku argumentuje ve prospěch zohledňování sociálně-vědního studia vědy ve středoškolské výuce. Poukazuje na to, že se učitelé a učitelky mohou vydat do prostoru sociologie vědy (jež je často sociologií fyziky), aniž by se tím nutně vzdalovali od vědeckého poznání, jež se zavázali žákům a žákyním předávat.

In the Czech Question (1895) Masaryk laid the foundation for his conception of the meaning of Czech history. Masaryk found the main idea, which qualitatively creates the continuity of Czech history and as a national emancipation programme has the necessary potential to give meaning to all its partial contexts, in the idea of humanity. The purpose of this paper is to point out the fundamental connection between the democratizing efforts of Masaryk’s political realism for a kind of permanent humanization of society, the aim of which was to transform the dysfunctional ancien régime of federalized Austria into a modern civil society. However, the theoretical basis for these considerations had already been given in earlier works, most notably in the book Foundations of Concrete Logic (1885). V České otázce (1895) Masaryk položil základ svého pojetí smyslu českých dějin. Nosnou ideu, jež kvalitativně vytváří onu kontinuitu českých dějin a jako národní emancipační program má nezbytný potenciál udílet smysl všem jejím dílčím kontextům, Masaryk našel v myšlence humanity. Účelem příspěvku je poukázat na principiální spojitost mezi demokratizačním úsilím Masarykova politického realismu o jakousi permanentní humanizaci společnosti, jejímž cílem bylo přetvářet disfunkční starý režim federalizovaného Rakouska na moderní občanskou společnost. Teoretický základ k těmto úvahám byl nicméně podán už ve starších pracích, především v knize Základové konkrétní logiky (1885).

By 1915 in London Thomas G. Masaryk publicly identified and described the origins of WW I as the neuralgic mid-European belt of minor nations between Germany and Russia presenting the geo-political core of the so called Eastern Question. For Masaryk, this Central Europe presented the most exigent and acute impetus for the allied democratic transformation of the political organization of Europe. By 1919 Halford J. Mackinder proclaimed his famous Heartland concept in the same vein. Masaryk’s plan was to gradually establish a United States of Europe out of transatlantic cooperation between a confederation of European old and new democracies and the U.S. Masaryk’s concept of democratic European unity obviously contradicts the core concept of the European Union that aims at a gradual elimination of European democracies. V r. 1915 Tomáš G. Masaryk v Londýně veřejně identifikoval a popsal původ první světové války jako neuralgický středoevropský pás menších národů mezi Německem a Ruskem coby geopolitické jádro tzv. východní otázky. Masarykovi tato střední Evropa představovala nejnaléhavější a nejakutnější podnět ke spojenecké demokratické transformaci politické organizace Evropy. V r. 1919 Halford J. Mackinder vyhlásil obdobnou, slavnou geopolitickou koncepci Heartlandu. Masaryk plánoval postupné ustavení Spojených států evropských z transatlantické kooperace mezi konfederací evropských starých a nových demokracií a USA. Masarykovo pojetí demokratické evropské jednoty zjevně protiřečí základní koncepci Evropské unie zaměřené na postupnou eliminaci evropských demokracií.

Melancholic souls. Social dysfunction and social phobias in Czech literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

This study deals with the presentation of social dysfunction in 1890s Czech Decadent literature. At a time when other literary movements were highlighting mass society and crowd behaviour as a topos, neo-Romantic, Decadent and Symbolist literature was reflecting extreme forms of individualism. The staging of pathological anxieties here became part of a broad contemporary debate over the relationship between individualism and a modernising, consumerist, conformist and manipulable society, which was also subject of contemporary psychology under various headings during and especially at the end of the 19th century. Pathological individualism was not presented in neo-Romantic, Decadent and Symbolist literature either as something people are obliged to choose, or as a goal of emancipatory endeavours, but as a condition to which some individuals are “condemned” as a result of uncontrollable, e.g. genetic, factors. Příspěvek se zabývá inscenacemi sociálních dysfunkcí v české dekadentní literatuře poslední dekády 19. století. V období, kdy se v jiných proudech české literatury prosazuje jako téma davová společnost a davové jednání, se neoromantická, dekadentní a symbolistická literatura obrací naopak k reflexi extrémních forem individualismu. Inscenace patologických úzkostí se tu stává součástí široké dobové debaty o vztahu individualismu a modernizující se konzumní, konformní a manipulovatelné společnosti, který v průběhu a zejména na sklonku 19. století tematizovala pod různými hlavičkami i dobová psychologie. Patologický individualismus není v novoromantické, dekadentní a symbolistické literatuře inscenován ani jako něco, co si máme povinnost zvolit, ani jako cíl emancipačních snah, nýbrž jako stav, ke kterému jsou někteří jedinci v důsledku konkrétních a zcela neovlivnitelných faktorů „odsouzeni“. \n

In the years 1597–1598, a large increase in Latin prints, especially poetry, can be observed in Olomouc’s printed production. Their authors are mostly connected with the Jesuit Academy in Olomouc. Researchers have noticed this strange phenomenon in the past, but it has not yet been satisfactorily explained. The article aims to find out the cause of this unusual „creative wave“. It is most probably due to a hitherto unknown personality, about whom we know more thanks to the research of Polish researchers – the Jesuit professor of poetry Johann Clingerius from Thuringia (1557?–1610), who taught at the Jesuit Academy during that period. On his initiative and with the support of Bishop Stanislav Pavlovský, more than thirty poetry prints were published by Jiří Handl and the heirs of Friedrich Milichthaler. Clingerius published his poems anonymously, under pseudonyms or under the names of others. He did not only profile himself as a poet, mastered graphic techniques and influenced the decoration of Olomouc prints. In addition, the appendix contains a bibliography of Latin poetry publications between 1597–1598. V letech 1597-1598 pozorujeme v olomoucké tiskařské produkci velký nárůst jazykově latinských tisků. Jejich autoři jsou většinou spojeni s jezuitskou akademií v Olomouci. Už v minulosti si vědci tohoto zvláštního fenoménu povšimli, ale dosud nebyl dostatečně prozkoumán. Úkolem článku je najít příčiny této nezvyklé tvůrčí vlny. Velmi pravděpodobně je za ní u nás dosud spíše neznámá osobnost, kterou známe lépe díky výzkumům polských badatelů – jezuitský profesor poesie Johann Clingerius z Durynska (1557?–1610), který učil v té době na olomoucké jezuitské akademii. Z jeho iniciativy a s finanční podporou biskupa Stanislava Pavlovského bylo vydáno více než třicet básnických tisků u Jiřího Handla a dědiců Fridricha Milichthalera. Sám Clingerius publikoval své básně anonymně, pod pseudonymy nebo pod jmény jiných. Neprofiloval se jen jako básník, ale ovládal grafické techniky a ovlivnil tak výzdobu olomouckých tisků té doby. V příloze článků je bibliografie latinské poezie vydané v Olomouci v letech 1597-1598.

This volume consists of a concluding report on an applied research project “Measures for developing an ethical culture in Czech state administration”. The project’s aim was to map the current situation civil service ethics at the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic and to provide a set of recommendations for improving and developing an ethical culture at Czech central-government agencies. Souhrnná výzkumná zpráva aplikovaného projektu “Nástroje rozvíjení etické kultury v české státní správě”, jehož cílem bylo zmapovat situaci v oblasti etiky státních zaměstnanců na Ministerstvu dopravy a předložit sadu doporučení ke zlepšení a dalšímu rozvíjení etické kultury v prostředí tohoto úřadu. Obecné závěry a poznatky shrnuté ve zprávě jsou využitelné i v kontextu dalších úřadů české státní správy.
