Epigraphica & Sepulcralia 12. Forum of epigraphical and sepulchral studies. The Proceedings of the 20th International Sessions on the Issue of Sepulchral Monuments, Prague 2-3 November 2021
Roháček, Jiří
2022 - Czech
The proceedings of the 20th international sessions on the issue of sepulchral monuments, which took place in Prague on 2–3 November 2021. These regular conferences, organized since 2000 by the Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, are focused on sepulchral monuments as material artefacts of sepulchral culture and as works of art in the traditional sense of the word, with a factual or methodological relation to the Central European issues. However, they do not avoid themes, that more widely explain the context, in which these monuments were created and were functionally applied. The emphasis is placed on the nature of interdisciplinary expert meetings. Through their focus and periodicity, they are unique in a pan-European context. The series Epigraphica & Sepulcralia has been the publication forum of these sessions since 2005. The conference proceedings contain a total of eighteen papers. In addition to Czech and Moravian topics, traditionally, a significant share of the conference is devoted to foreign issues, specifically Polish and Slovak, and indirectly to other regions of Central Europe. The significant share of papers dealing with the reflection of sepulchral and epigraphic monuments in written sources, which allow a slightly different view of the issue, is highly positive. Kromě českých a moravských témat má tradičně významný podíl problematika zahraniční, zde konkrétně polská a slovenská, zprostředkovaně pak i dalších regionů střední Evropy. Tombstones and Epitaphs of Italians in the Czech Lands during 1500-1620
Chlíbec, Jan
2022 - Czech
Thus far, no attention with respect to nationality has been paid to tombstones and epitaphs of Italians who lived in the Czech lands during the Renaissance era and who were subsequently buried there. Nevertheless, it is an interesting segment of this specific type of sculpture, although rather from the perspective of cultural history and epigraphy than from the art history. The commissioners of these works largely adapted their taste to the established types of sepulchral monuments and epithaphs north of Alps. The convolute of these works is rather limited, thus far comprising of 11 works and only 4 of them are figural. Yet, sober inscription plates , decorated only with the coat of arms of the deceased person, prevail in the majority of sepulchral works of the researched convolute.Their austere artistic form can be explained by the influence of the Council of Trent´s ideology. The Prague synod in 1605 continued the refusal of pompous tombstones and had an unfavourable impact on the development of sepulchral sculpture. Náhrobkům a epitafům Italů, kteří žili v období renesance v českých zemích a byli zde také pohřbeni, nebyla z hlediska národní příslušnosti dosud věnována pozornost. From American Spirituals to Czech Folk Ballads: Spiritual Kvintet and the Sources of their Lyrics over Six Decades
Opekar, Aleš
2022 - Czech
The paper deals with the lyrical aspect of Spiritual Kvintet’s repertoire and the sources from which the Czech group has drawn over their 60-year-long career. Initially, they were interested in African American spirituals, which gave the group its name. Soon after they added the folk songs of European immigrants to the USA. Czech sources of Spiritual Kvintet’s repertoire include European Renaissance songs, transcribed from lute tablatures of the Rudolphine era, songs of the Czech national revival, traditional Czech folk ballads, and finally some original compositions by Czech authors. The wide range of genres was matched by the unifying character of the lyrics. Both the foreign and archaic songs required translation into Czech, so the local audience would understand. The new lyrics were supplied by the members and friends of the group (Jiří Tichota, František Novotný, Dušan Vančura, and Vlastimil Marhoul), and some were provided by the renowned lyricist Ivo Fischer. The authors often shifted the specific nuances of the original meaning in favour of keeping the rhythm and sonority of the Czech verses. Nevertheless, they managed to formulate the songs’ original social message in a way that evoked associations with the domestic social situation. The diversity of the texts was unified by the musical arrangements, based on multi-voiced singing accompanied by guitar, double bass, and other acoustic instruments. Souběžně začali nacvičovat i bělošské písně amerických přistěhovalců a jejich novou tvorbu a následně též evropské renesanční písně, transkribované z loutnových tabulatur rudolfinské éry. V dalším vývoji se skupina otevřela i písním českého národního obrození, domácím lidovým baladám a nakonec v malé míře i původní vlastní tvorbě. Širokému žánrovému záběru odpovídal i charakter textů. Producing and Presenting Photographs in the Form of „Newprints“
Bohdan, Vlado; Mašterová, Katarína
2021 - Czech
The core of the conservation procedure is in the method for making so-called “new prints” – new analogue photographs – black and white gelatine silver-bromide prints (blow-ups or contact copies) of the original historical negatives. The prerequisite for understanding the procedure is knowledge of dark room work. This original procedure is intended for private collections and institutions which aim to present negatives of a deceased photographer in a way which is as close to the author’s original intention as is currently possible. The procedure was developed on a specific collection of Josef Sudek’s negatives with the topic of reproductions of art works and architecture. Theoretical justification for the procedure, as well as examples of its practical outcomes, are also part of the text. The proceedings of the 17th international session on the issue of sepulchral monuments, which took place in Prague on 24 October - 26 October 2018. It contains eighteen papers in total (in Czech, English and Slovak), which deal directly or contextually with sepulchral monuments from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Besides, the territorially Bohemian and Moravian issue as well as the Slovak and Polish issues have a significant share. The proceedings are divided in to three parts, in terms of the religious context of the discussed themes - hence into parts devoted to Christian, Jewish and finally supplemental, but still in the Central European milieu, Islamic sepulchral monuments. A Spectacle in Circus - Distraction, Concentration?
Machalíková, Pavla
2021 - Czech
The text takes as its starting point the thesis of Jonathan Crary about the fragmentation of modern society and modern perception. As an example, it takes circus posters and announcements for the Bich circus society in Prague shortly after 1800. It analyses circus as a specific type of modern spectacle which manipulates the perception of the viewer in ways similar to manipulations in modern art. Identifying Negatives and their Storage Methods Based on Type of Film Support
Cíglerová, Tereza; Doležalová, Kateřina
2021 - Czech
The conservation procedure presents the methods of identifying photographic negatives on polymer supports , especially by means of a cellulose nitrate base and cellulose acetate base, and the choice of various techniques on the basis of various factors, such as the collection’s size and physical condition, the workspace’s available equipment, the financial and time availability or the experiences of the identifying persons. For their indisputable informational value, the conservationist approach favors pilot survey which provides the initial idea about the collection’s material and physical composition and then helps with the choice of identification methods applied during the research phase. In the second part, the methodology focuses on the issues associated with long-term storage of the negatives and compares their recommended standards with the actual means at the disposal of minor institutions. It also proposes fitting, or at least acceptable, solutions. Sepulchral monuments in the practice of monument care
Roháček, Jiří; Müller, K.; Chlíbec, Jan; Slavík, J.
2021 - Czech
The methodology book pioneers in presenting the forms and evolution of Christian sepulchral monuments dated from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, their decoration and epigraphic suit. The main part of the methodology book consists of chapters on recording, documentation, preservation and presentation of sepulchral monuments. The chapters on epigraphic and heraldic accessories are aimed to be directly used as sources for sepulchral monuments' recording. A lot of attention is paid to managing records of the monuments in the environment of the heritage conservation integrated information system. Velká pozornost je věnována dokumentaci, zejména v prostředí v současnosti budovaného Integrovaného informačního systému památkové péče – v jednotné webové aplikaci Památkový katalog, určené k evidenci a dokumentaci památkového fondu.
