Between Morphology and Word-formation: the Grammatical Category of Number in Toponyms

2019 - Czech The paper deals with the specific functions of the grammatical category of number in Czech toponyms. As proper nouns form a specific sphere of the language, also their grammatical categories may display differences from the core of the lexicon. In many toponyms the plural ending does not fulfil the usual role of the grammatical ending, for it does not express the plurality or the multiple character of the object (e.g. the fact that the object consists of several parts). The use of the plural ending is merely analogical in many toponyms, the analogy is based on mechanical imitation of the form of other toponyms. In these cases the plural ending functions rather as a derivative word-formation suffix than a mere grammatical ending. On the other hand, in some toponyms the grammatical function of the plural ending is still kept. The decisive criterion for the detection of the function of the plural ending is based on the details of the given naming act. Příspěvek se zabývá specifickými funkcemi gramatické kategorie čísla u českých toponym. Vzhledem k tomu, že propria vytvářejí specifickou vrstvu jazyka, i jejich gramatické kategorie mohou vykazovat jisté odlišnosti. U mnoha toponym plurálové zakončení neplní svou obvyklou úlohu pouhé gramatické koncovky, protože nevyjadřuje pluralitu nebo vícečetný charakter objektu (např. skutečnost, že objekt sestává z více částí). Užití plurálového zakončení je u mnoha toponym analogické, analogie je založena na mechanickém napodobení formy jiných toponym. V těchto případech plurálové zakončení plní spíše funkci derivačního slovotvorného sufixu než úlohu pouhé gramatické koncovky. U některých toponym je však gramatická funkce plurálové koncovky zachována. Rozhodující kritérium pro rozpoznání funkce plurálového zakončení je založeno na vyhodnocení podrobností daného propriálně pojmenovacího aktu. On Known and Unknown Names of Minerals

2019 - Czech This article is focused on names of minerals. We analyzed lexical material of The Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech (Akademický slovník současné češtiny (ASSČ), first part: letter A) and of publication Nerostopis čili Mineralogia (Presl, 1837). We discuss the word formation, semantic motivation and naming process in group of names of minerals. The aim of the article is to present the structure of mineral name in the entry in ASSČ. V příspěvku je věnována pozornost názvům minerálů. Při analýze lexikálního materiálu vycházíme z hesláře písmene A připravovaného Akademického slovníku současné češtiny (ASSČ) a z publikace Nerostopis čili Mineralogia (z roku 1837) Jana Svatopluka Presla. Zaměřujeme se na sémantickou motivaci vzniku názvů minerálů a na pojmenovací postupy, které jsou při pojmenovávání minerálů využívány. Představujeme strukturu heslového odstavce terminologických hesel, názvů minerálů, v ASSČ. Medical Eponyms, Achilles’ Heel of Language Consulting Centre’s enquirers

2019 - Czech Eponyms are a traditional part of medical terminology. Their specificity consists in the proprial motivation (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). Especially in several past decades there is undoubtedly an increase of medical terms (and therefore eponyms) in everyday communication. Questions for the correct form of eponyms naturally emerged in lingustically structured database of enquiries, too. The paper focuses on orthographic and morphological aspect that enquirers of Language Consulting Centre have difficulty with and practical use of the resulting language data. Tradiční součástí lékařské terminologie jsou eponyma, specifická svou propriální motivací (např. Alzheimerova choroba, Zollingerův-Ellisonův syndrom). V posledních desetiletích zaznamenáváme nárůst lékařské terminologie (a tedy i eponym) v běžné komunikaci. Dotazy na správnou podobu zápisu eponym se tak přirozeně objevují i v lingvisticky strukturované databázi jazykových dotazů. Příspěvek se zaměřuje na pravopisné a morfologické jevy, které tazatelům jazykové poradny činí obtíže, a zároveň představuje navrhovaná řešení, v neposlední řadě též praktické využití získaných jazykových dat.
