Metternich - Nobile - Metternich. Patronage as a relationship with a changing constant
Petrasová, Taťána
2020 - Czech
This paper examines the authorship of an artwork as the result of patronage in which the social capital of both participants - the artist and his patron - changes. Initially Metternich drew on the symbolic capital held by the Italian architect, who had studied in Rome. Later the balance of their relationship was reversed. The variable element in this patronage was the imbalance between how the patron and artist benefitted from their social capital - one in terms of representation, and the other in terms of success on the art market. Keywords: architecture; Neo-Classicism; ephemer architecture; park; monuments; Pietro Nobile; Clemens Wenzel Lothar Metternich; Bartolomeo Bongiovanni; Königswart; Kulm; Czech Lands; Austria; 19th century Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Richard Moest, author-forger of the Klosterneuburg Virgin and Child on a Lion?
Hlobil, Ivo
2020 - Czech
The paper recapitulates in detail the long debate and the different views on the authenticity of the Klosterneuburg Madonna (National Gallery Prague) as major work of Master of Michle Virgin and Child from around 1345. The paper's author bring new arguments for the carving's authenticity. He believes that the Klosterneuburg Virgin and Child on Lion was originally part of the choir stalls in a church in Moravia or Bohemia. Keywords: gothic art; gothic sculpture; Klosterneuburg Virgin and Child on Lion; Czech Lands; Richard Moest (1841-1906); Master of the Michle Virgin and Child (c. 1330-1345) Available at various institutes of the ASCR

The literary source of the inscription slab of the Žerotín Palace in Olomouc
Dolejší, Kateřina
2020 - Czech
This conference paper deals with Latin inscription on monumental sandstone slab of the Žerotín Palace in Olomouc. The large late Renaissance heraldic slab with ornamental cartouches was ordered around 1597 by the Moravian captain Fridrich the Elder from Žerotín. Fourteen line long moralizing Latin inscription is literal quote from the book Melodaesia sive Epulum Musaeum by neo-Latin poet Friedrich Taubmann from 1597. Studie se zabývá monumentální nápisovou deskou z Žerotínského paláce v Olomouci. Desku nechal okolo roku 1597 vytesat moravský zemský hejtman Fridrich st. ze Žerotína. Čtrnáctiřádkový moralizující latinský text je doslovnou citací epigrafu z knihy novolatinského básníka Friedricha Taubmanna Melodaesia sive Epulum Musaeum, vydané poprvé roku 1597. Keywords: epigraphy; inscription; neo-latin literature; humanism; Žerotín family; Friedrich Taubmann (1565-1613); The Žerotín Palace in Olomouc; Olomouc; Moravia; 16th century Available at various institutes of the ASCR

On sepulchral memory in an epigraphic campaign: The towns of Prague after the events of 1648
Roháček, Jiří
2019 - English
The more than four-month successful defense of the Old and New Towns of Prague against Swedish troops in 1648 was relatively small in the context of the Thirty Years' War, but a very important episode for Prague cities and to a large extent for Bohemia. In Prague we can observe the remains of a relevant, originally certainly much richer epigraphic campaign, which has two main directions - the first is connected with thanks to Virgin Mary as protector and intercessor of cities, the second with contextual presentation of improved coats of arm of Old and New Town. Surprising is, however, the absence of a larger sepulchral memorie of 219 fallen defenders. The only preserved monument is the epitaph of Václav Čabelický of Soutice in the Church of Our Lady before Týn. The figural epitaph is known for its rich heraldic and epigraphic accompaniment. This fact raises a number of questions about the position of sepulchral and epigraphic monuments in a collective memory. Keywords: epigraphy; inscription; sepulchral monuments; memory; campaign; Prague; Bohemia; 17th century Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Religious Allusions in Non-religious Texts in Czech Popular Music: “God has covered His face”
Opekar, Aleš
2019 - Czech
The paper deals with an abundance of sacred, mostly Christian symbolism in the texts of Czech popular music, whose contents are not religious. Christian symbols are used as a common supply of words, similar to everyday speech, and sometimes they are placed in layers of sequences, such as prayers for love and art. Sometimes they are used as poetic devices that enhance aesthetic effects. The core of the paper is an analysis of specific but mutually different approaches of three Czech singer-songwriters of three generations: Jiří Suchý, Svatopluk Karásek, and Beata Bocek. While Suchý works with religious rhetoric rarely but with great artistic effect, Karásek makes it a natural part of his songs, which in his day was a relevant extension into social and political topics. Beata Bocek’s topics do not match any expected style: she uses common language for singing about sacred matters, and sings about general human matters in soulful language. Jádrem práce je analýza specifických, vzájemně odlišných přístupů tří českých zpěváků a skladatelů tří generací: Jiřího Suchého, Svatopluka Karáska a Beaty Bocek. Philosophy and urban public space
Kratochvíl, Petr
2019 - Czech
The essay develops the idea of urban public space from the paradigmatic situation of dialogues that Socrates conducted on the agora with his fellow citizens about common affairs of “polis”. This opportunity to confront own experiences with those of other people represents the deeper social sense of the public spaces and should be protected against restrictions connected with privatisation, and commodification of urban public space. The essay refers to theories of H. Arendt, J. Habermas and R. Sennett. Keywords: public areas; public space; town Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Epigraphica & Sepulcralia 8. Forum of epigraphical and sepulchral studies
Roháček, Jiří
2019 - Czech
The proceedings of the jubilee 15th international session on the issue of sepulchral monuments, which took place in Prague on 19 October – 21 October 2016. These regular conferences, organized since 2000 by the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, are focused on sepulchral monuments as material artefacts of sepulchral culture and as works of art in the traditional sense of the word, with a factual or methodological relation to Central European issues. However, they do not not avoid themes that more widely explain the context in which these monuments were created and were functionally applied. An emphasis is placed on the nature of interdisciplinary expert meetings. Through their focus and periodicity, they are unique in the pan-European context. A novelty of this session was the inclusion of an independent block devoted to Hebrew monuments. The proceedings are divided into three parts, in terms of the religious context of the discussed themes – hence into parts devoted to Christian, Jewish and finally supplemental, but still in the Central European milieu, Islamic sepulchral monuments. It contains twenty-five papers in total, which deal directly or contextually with sepulchral monuments from the Late Middle Ages to the 21st century. Besides, the territorially Bohemian and Moravian issue as well as the German, Slovak and Polish issues make up a significant share of the work. The series Epigraphica & Sepulcralia has been the publication forum of these sessions since 2005. Nově byly zařazeny i příspěvky k památkám židovským a islámským. Photography and the moment. Several comments on the mechanical recording of the image and the reciprocity of light and time in the 19th century
Trnková, Petra
2019 - Czech
One of the key issues met with by professional and amateur photographers, natural scientists and ultimately even artists working with photography in the 19th century was the length of the exposure. Based on several examples from output both at home and abroad, this article describes not only the changing face of exposure time (both faster and slower) as new photographic technologies developed, but also its practical application, the transformation of its „ideal“ and not least, the associated technology. Keywords: photography; exposure time; a second Available at various institutes of the ASCR
