This study explores the possibility of alternative approaches to the history of contemporary states formed on national principles. The author assesses the positive and negative aspects of transnational and entangled history and the possible application of such an approach to Czech history, working with the concepts "Czech", "Czechoslovak" and "Böhmisch". Článek se zamýšlí nad přístupy k soudobým dějinám alternativními k národocentrickému historiografickému mainstreamu. Všímá si vzestupu transnationálních resp. „zapletených“ dějin a jejich potenciální přínos porovnává s tradičními alternativami v českém historickém myšlení spjatými zejména s tzv. „bohemistickou“ resp. středoevropskou perspektivou rozvíjenou mj. v myšlení československého disentu 70. a 80. let 20. století.

The Research of Alfonsine Astronomy

The contribution deals with the history of Alfonsine astronomy which was spreaded over the Europe from the 1320´s up to the early modern time. It consists from the astronomical tables and rules as well as instruments and theoretical treatises. Příspěvek se stručně zabývá dějinami Alfonsinské astronomie, rozšířené po celé Evropě od 20. let 14. století až do 16. století. Alfonsinská astronomie zahrnuje jak matematické tabulky a jejich pravidla k užívání, tak astronomick přístroje.

The Image of Czechoslovakia in Contemporary English-Language Historiography

This study analyzes the treatment of Czechoslovak history by historians writing in English during the past two decades, with the emphasis on political history as an axis of contemporary history. The author describes historians' approaches to major 20th-century events in Czechoslovakia, evaluating and summarizing their findings. The second part of the study focuses on Czech historiography of contemporary Czechoslovak history and its reception by the international historiographic community. The author emphasizes the need for mutual cooperation regardless of language barriers. Studie, sepsaná v roce 2011, analyzuje pojímání československých dějin v anglicky psané historiografii po roce 1989, se zvláštním důrazem na politické dějiny jakožto osu soudobých dějin. Autor popisuje přístupy jednotlivých historiků k ústředním událostem 20. století v Československu, přičemž hodnotí a sumarizuje jejich závěry. Druhá část studie se zaměřuje na otázku, do jaké míry je česká historiografie soudobých československých dějin recipována mezinárodní komunitou historiků, a zdůrazňuje potřebu užší vzájemné spolupráce bez ohledu na jazykové bariéry.

This study demonstrates that the year 1944 was exceptional in the context of the overall development of Czechoslovak foreign policy. It was in this year, and only then, that the exile leadership proclaimed its ambition to play the role of a “bridge between East and West.” However, by the end of the year, the U.S.S.R., soon followed by the Communist leaders in Moscow, expressed its negative attitude to this idea. What followed was a flabby submission and a growing foreign policy orientation towards the East. Tato studie dokládá, že rok 1944 byl v rámci československé zahraniční politiky výjimečným, když během něj – a právě jen během něj – proklamovalo exilové vedení svou ambici sehrávat úlohu „mostu mezi Východem a Západem“. Do konce roku se však jednoznačně proti postavil SSSR a spolu s ním komunistické vedení v Moskvě. Následovalo ochablé podvolení se a stále jednoznačnější orientace na Východ.

In the introduction, the article deals with the problems of the strategic situation of the Allies in the year 1944. In the summer of 1944, it seemed that the war could end soon, but despite the heavy losses, Germans managed to recover. The situation of the Czechoslovak exile and its military formations developed on this broader context. The first half of 1944 was thus a period of preparation for the moment of deemed critical decision. At the end of the summer, the Czechoslovak military formations entered the combat operations both on Eastern and Western fronts, the moment of final victory was however still far away. Příspěvek se v úvodu zabývá problémy strategické situace Spojenců v roce 1944. V létě 1944 se zdálo, že válka skončí brzy, Němci se ale navzdory těžkým porážkám dokázali vzpamatovat. Od širších souvislostí se vyvíjela i situace československého exilu a jeho ozbrojených sil. První polovina roku 1944 byla přípravným obdobím na okamžik domnělého zásadního rozhodnutí. Na konci léta vstoupily československé formace na východní i západní frontě do bojových operací, okamžik konečného vítězství však byl ještě daleko.

Memorial sites. Topography of the present memory of the nation and its reflections

The methodology deals with a methodological capture of the phenomenon of memorial sites as basic elements of memory studies. It shows how rules (criteria applying to inclusion) are determined, as well as the importance of naming exceptions (assessment from the viewpoint of the whole complex of memorial places, correlation of memorial places). The methodology also elaborates the description and documentation of memorial places and presents techniques that can be employed to process collected data, which are a necessary prerequisite for a professional analysis and interpretation. Metodika "Pamětní místa. Topografie soudobé paměti národa a její reflexe" se zabývá metodickým uchopením fenoménu pamětního místa jako základního prvku paměťových studií. Ukazuje způsob stanovení pravidel (kritérií pro zařazení) i význam pojmenování výjimek (posouzení z pohledu celku, souvztažnost pamětních míst). Dále metodika rozpracovává popis a dokumentaci pamětního místa a uvádí možné způsoby zpracování získaných dat, jež jsou nutným předpokladem pro odbornou analýzu a interpretaci.

Pitter je dobrým příkladem pro výuku česko-německo-židovského soužití a ukázkou humanistického chování ve 20. století.

The reform of the occupation administration played a major role in Heydrich´s occupation policy, which was based on the need to depoliticize Czech society, divide it up into individual social groups and link it to war production and gradual Germanisation according to racial considerations. Reforma okupační správy hrála důležitou roli při prosazování Heydrichovy okupační politiky, která byla založena na nutnosti odpolitizování české společnosti, jejím rozdělení na jednotlivé sociální skupiny, zapojení do válečné výroby a postupné germanizaci podle rasových hledisek.

Příspěvek se na příkladu jednoho regionu věnuje fenoménu smrti ve válce a její variability. Popisuje také fenomén střetu osudů prostých jednotlivců s velkými dějinnými událostmi.
