2009 - English This bachelor thesis deals with modal verbs expressing deontic necessity in administrative style. The theoretical part defines the term "modality" and states two main kinds of modality. Furthermore, it concentrates on characteristic features and functions of individual modal verbs expressing deontic necessity. In the practical part, the theory is applied to the documents of administrative style in order to state the frequency of occurrence of selected modals as well as to prove or disprove the presumption stated. 2009 - English This bachelor thesis deals with Czech translational equivalents of English sentence condensers gerunds and present participles in the legal style. The first part characterizes legal style and legal translation. The second part defines and classifies English gerunds and participles from the viewpoint of syntax and discusses the translation of English sentence condensers into Czech. The last part of the paper presents findings of the analysis, which is based on the legal corpus consisting of the documents where English is used as a lingua franca. 2008 - English Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá překladovou studií filmů žánru science fiction. Jejím a autorovým cílem je zmapování procesu překladu science fiction filmů s důrazem na metody titulkování a dabingu. Zatímco první část se zabývá teorií spojenou se stylem a žánrem, překladatelskými postupy a metodami, druhá část je věnována analýze vybraných filmových děl a jejich českých překladů. Hlavními zkoumanými faktory jsou elementy pro science fiction typické, tj. neologismy, technické termíny a také vlastní jména a pojmenování. Zhodnocena je krátce i formální stránka titulků a dabingu. Indian captivity tales

2008 - English This bachelor paper analyzes the narratives of captured European settlers by the native American Indians – the "Indian captivity tales”. Primarily it focuses on three female captives and their experiences from Indian captivity, each imprisoned in different century and area of the American continent. The paper begins with presenting the motives that led the American Indians to their acts. Second part of the paper describes themes of the individual period that apply to three chosen narratives. Attention is turned especially to the Puritan era by reason of paralleling personal experiences of the captives with biblical stories. Last part of the paper is devoted to analysis of pleasant or painful experiences of three female captives as well as of their different perception of the American Indian culture. 2008 - English The bachelor work focuses on the British and American society in the second half of the 19th century. The issues of social classes and hierarchy, development and changes within them as well as the differences between particular classes are analysed and contrasted. Special attention is paid to the upper class's lifestyle, social status, and gender roles together with the questions of victorian rules and attitudes towards mores and sexuality. The ideologies of the way of life, social values, conventions and morality of the victorian society are presented on the novels The French Lieutenant's Woman and The Age of Innocence by John Fowles and Edith Wharton respectively.
