V pořadí již druhé setkání tvůrců, výrobců, uživatelů a zájemců o technologii vodního paprsku v České republice pod názvem Vodní paprsek 2011 - výzkum, vývoj, aplikace navazuje na úspěšný první ročník. Konference je pořádána Oddělením desintegrace materiálů Ústavu geoniky AV ČR, v. v. i. v Ostravě. Vzhledem k významné finanční podpoře aktivit spojených s přípravou a konáním konference prostřednictvím projektu Mezinárodního Visegradského Fondu bylo letos možno uspořádat konferenci v horském hotelu Sepetná v Ostravici na úpatí nejvyššího vrcholu Moravskoslezských Beskyd - Lysé hory. Široké spektrum problémů řešených v přihlášených příspěvcích ukazuje na rozšiřující se uplatnění technologie vodního paprsku v nejrůznějších oborech lidské činnosti. Významný podíl zahraničních účastníků konference potvrzuje vzrůstající zájem o technologii v celém Euroregionu. Conference Water Jet 2011 – Research, Development, Applications represents the second meeting of producers, users, designers and other people interested in technology of high speed water jet in the Czech Republic; it is a follow up to the successful first meeting held in 2009. The conference is organized by the Department of material disintegration of the Institute of Geonics of the ASCR, v. v. i. in Ostrava. With respect to the significant contribution of the International Visegrad Fund project to the activities related to the preparation and organizing of the conference, this year it was possible to hold the conference in the mountain hotel Sepetná in Ostravice at the foothill of the highest mountain in the Moravian– Silesian Beskydy Mountains – the Lysá Mountain. A wide spectrum of problems which are solved in submitted papers shows the recent trends in the application of the water jet technology in a great variety of branches of human activities. The considerable number of foreign participants of the conference proves the increasing interest in the technology in the whole Euroregion.

The conference Congeo´2011 on “Exploring New Landscapes of Energies” was the 8th presentation of the geographical conferences organized by the Department of Environmental Geography at the Institute of Geonics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. This year’s conference was organized in the context of a recently initiated research project: “Energy Landscapes: Innovation, Development and Internationalization of Research”, which is aimed at accelerating international collaboration in research in the field of energy/landscape interrelationships. It was the aim of the conference to cover a wide spectrum of concerning issues: New energy geographies: conceptual and methodological challenges; Social–political acceptance of renewable energy innovation; Energy development, landscape character and landscape aesthetics; New energies for multifunctional agriculture; Energy production, local identity and land-use conflicts; Power, environmental (in)justice and politics of land-use; GIS in landscape planning and energy development; etc. This is the collection of abstracts of papers and posters.

8. Česko-polská konference Geologie uhelných pánví představuje tradiční setkání odborníků, především z České republiky a Polska. V rámci konference jsou prezentovány dokumenty zabývající se širokými problémy - charakterizací uhelných pánví, sedimentární postupy, stratigrafií, petrografií hornin a uhlí, fyzikálními a chemickými vlastnostmi uhlí a hornin, pyrolýzou a spalováním v procesech připojení k environmentálním aspektům. The 8th Czech-Polish conference on the coal basin geology represents a traditional meeting of specialists, mainly from the czech Republic and Poland. Within the frame of the conference there are presented papers concerned with wide problems - coal basin characterization, sedimentary progression, stratigraphy, petrography of rocks and coal, physical and chemical properties of coal and rocks, pyrolysis and combustion processess connected to environmental aspects.

These proceedings contain abstracts and contributions presented at the fifth Ph.D. Workshop of the Institute of Geonics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The workshop is split into two parts held simultaneously in Ostrava and in Brno, which concern geotechnics, rock mechanics, geophysics and mathematical modeling (Ostrava) and physical and social geography (Brno). The main aim is to bring together the Ph.D. students studying and working or having their supervisors at the Institute of Geonics AS CR. For the whole research community, the workshop gives a possibility to see new results and follow the progress in work in the field of Ph.D. training, which is considered as very important for fulfilling the mission of the institute in the society and training researchers for the future development of the institute.

Eurorural '10 conference on European countryside under globalization. It is the 2nd of Moravian rural conferences organised by the Department of Applied and Landscape Ecology, Faculty of Agronomy, Mendel University in Brno. The aims of the conference are as follows: to map European rural research and particular interests of investigators, to gain a space for presentation of contemporary knowledge about rural research, to continue in the tradition of international conferences dedicated to rural problems, to support intra-personal contacts among experts of different disciplines dealing with rural problems, to present South Moravian rural landscape. The conference is aimed at relatively complex view of rural problems from different viewpoints (ecology, geography, demography, sociology, economy, territorial planning), less at research of specific problems in detail.

These proceedings contain contributions presented at the fourth Ph.D. Workshop of the Institute of Geonics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic held in this year simultaneously in Ostrava and in Brno on November 19, 2009. Ph.D. training belongs among the most important activities not only of the universities but also of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Note that in total more than 2000 Ph.D. students are being trained at the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It guarantees that the knowledge and experience from the research will be forwarded and extended, which is of principal importance for the development of the research and the whole academic system. Sborník obsahuje příspěvky, které byly prezentovány na 4. workshopu doktorandů, který se konal na Ústavu geoniky AV ČR. V letošním roce se workshop konal paralelně na ústavu v Ostravě a na pobočce ústavu v Brně, která je sídlem oddělení environmentální geografie.

Konference Vodní paprsek 2009 - výzkum, vývoj, aplikace, která je organizována Oddělením desintegrace materiálů Ústavu geoniky AV ČR, v. v. i., je prvním setkáním výrobců, uživatelů, tvůrců a zájemců o technologii vysokorychlostního vodního paprsku v České republice. Hlavním cílem konference je poskytnout fórum k výměně názorů, informací a zkušeností v oblastech, které se týkají výzkumu, vývoje a aplikace vysokorychlostních vodních paprsků. I když byla konference původně koncipována jako víceméně lokální setkání odborníků z České republiky, množství zahraničních účastníků jen dokazuje, že tato problematika je velmi atraktivní i daleko za hranicemi ČR. Okruhy řešené v příspěvcích jsou velmi rozmanité: od základního výzkumu přes tradiční i méně tradiční aplikace technologie v praxi až po zamyšlení nad dopady současné ekonomické krize na zakázková pracoviště. Pevně věřím, že toto setkání obohatí všechny zúčastněné o nové poznatky, které později uplatní ve svém profesním životě. Conference Water Jet 2009 - Research, Development, Application, which is organized by the Department of material disintegration of the Institute of Geonics of the ASCR, v. v. i., is the first meeting of producers, users, designers and other people interested in technology of high speed water jet in the Czech Republic. The main objective of the conference is to provide forum for exchange of knowledge, information and experiences in areas of research, development and application of water jet. Although the conference was originally intended as a more or less local meeting of experts from the Czech Republic, a number of foreign participants proves that this issue is very attractive far beyond the borders of the CR. Problems solved in contributions are very diverse: they range from basic research through traditional and less traditional application of technology in practice to reflection on the impact of the current economic crisis on job shops.

Seminar on Numerical Analysis 2009 (SNA’09) is the sixth meeting of a series of events started in Ostrava 2003 and devoted to numerical methods necessary for mathematical modelling of problems in sciences and engineering. In this respect, it was natural that in period 2005 - 2008 the SNA conferences became a part of the project MSTEP (http://www2.cs.cas.cz/mweb/) Modelling and simulation of complex engineering problems: effective numerical algorithms and parallel implementation using new information technologies within the program Information society administrated by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. We hope that the tradition of SNA conferences will be preserved even after finishing the MSTEP project in 2008. Seminář numerické analýzy 2009 (SNA ´09) je již šestým setkáním, z nichž první se uskutečnilo v roce 2003. Je věnován problematice numerických metod využívaných při matematickém modelování v řadě vědních oborů a stavitelství.
