Water Jet 2013 - Research, Development, Applications is the third international meeting of researchers, manufacturers, end-users, and all those interested in the technology of high-speed water jetting organized by the Department of material disintegration of the Institute of Geonics of the ASCR Ostrava. It provides a basis not only for exchange knowledge, ideas, information and experiences in areas of research, development and applications of water jets, as well as stimulating discussions, but also opportunity to make new acquaintances and friends. Number and diversity of papers submitted to the conference indicate permanent great interest in the water jetting technology and continuous expansion of water jets to new fields of human activities

Multifunctional Rural Development

Rural area was traditionally connected with agriculture. To compare with urban, rural areas were considered to be backward, retarded, not worthy of an intensive research. But the situation has changed in the last time. Although cities are still centres of development in the globalization process, people in Europe leave them as a result of the processes of suburbanization and counter-urbanization. The share of rural population slowly increases in European countries. In addition, farmers form only a minority in contemporary rural settlements. The countryside is getting to be a multi-functional space. Secondary and tertiary sectors penetrate to the countryside. Tourism and agro-tourism develop in the large scale. Agriculture is getting focused more on the maintenance of landscape than with the production. On the other hand, environmental problems also have an impact on rural landscape. European countryside develops within the globalization process.

The conference Congeo´2011 on “Exploring New Landscapes of Energies” was the 8th presentation of the geographical conferences organized by the Department of Environmental Geography at the Institute of Geonics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. This year’s conference was organized in the context of a recently initiated research project: “Energy Landscapes: Innovation, Development and Internationalization of Research”, which is aimed at accelerating international collaboration in research in the field of energy/landscape interrelationships. It was the aim of the conference to cover a wide spectrum of concerning issues: New energy geographies: conceptual and methodological challenges; Social–political acceptance of renewable energy innovation; Energy development, landscape character and landscape aesthetics; New energies for multifunctional agriculture; Energy production, local identity and land-use conflicts; Power, environmental (in)justice and politics of land-use; GIS in landscape planning and energy development; etc. This is the collection of abstracts of papers and posters.

These proceedings contain abstracts and contributions presented at the fifth Ph.D. Workshop of the Institute of Geonics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The workshop is split into two parts held simultaneously in Ostrava and in Brno, which concern geotechnics, rock mechanics, geophysics and mathematical modeling (Ostrava) and physical and social geography (Brno). The main aim is to bring together the Ph.D. students studying and working or having their supervisors at the Institute of Geonics AS CR. For the whole research community, the workshop gives a possibility to see new results and follow the progress in work in the field of Ph.D. training, which is considered as very important for fulfilling the mission of the institute in the society and training researchers for the future development of the institute.

European Countryside under Globalization

Eurorural '10 conference on European countryside under globalization. It is the 2nd of Moravian rural conferences organised by the Department of Applied and Landscape Ecology, Faculty of Agronomy, Mendel University in Brno. The aims of the conference are as follows: to map European rural research and particular interests of investigators, to gain a space for presentation of contemporary knowledge about rural research, to continue in the tradition of international conferences dedicated to rural problems, to support intra-personal contacts among experts of different disciplines dealing with rural problems, to present South Moravian rural landscape. The conference is aimed at relatively complex view of rural problems from different viewpoints (ecology, geography, demography, sociology, economy, territorial planning), less at research of specific problems in detail.

These proceedings contain contributions presented at the fourth Ph.D. Workshop of the Institute of Geonics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic held in this year simultaneously in Ostrava and in Brno on November 19, 2009. Ph.D. training belongs among the most important activities not only of the universities but also of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Note that in total more than 2000 Ph.D. students are being trained at the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It guarantees that the knowledge and experience from the research will be forwarded and extended, which is of principal importance for the development of the research and the whole academic system. Sborník obsahuje příspěvky, které byly prezentovány na 4. workshopu doktorandů, který se konal na Ústavu geoniky AV ČR. V letošním roce se workshop konal paralelně na ústavu v Ostravě a na pobočce ústavu v Brně, která je sídlem oddělení environmentální geografie.

Seminar on Numerical Analysis 2009 (SNA’09) is the sixth meeting of a series of events started in Ostrava 2003 and devoted to numerical methods necessary for mathematical modelling of problems in sciences and engineering. In this respect, it was natural that in period 2005 - 2008 the SNA conferences became a part of the project MSTEP (http://www2.cs.cas.cz/mweb/) Modelling and simulation of complex engineering problems: effective numerical algorithms and parallel implementation using new information technologies within the program Information society administrated by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. We hope that the tradition of SNA conferences will be preserved even after finishing the MSTEP project in 2008. Seminář numerické analýzy 2009 (SNA ´09) je již šestým setkáním, z nichž první se uskutečnilo v roce 2003. Je věnován problematice numerických metod využívaných při matematickém modelování v řadě vědních oborů a stavitelství.

The main aim of the Workshop is to bring Ph.D. students studying and working or having their supervisors at the Institute of Geniocs AS CR.The topics presented at the workshop reflect wide variety of problems solved at the Institute of Geonics. These problems comprise propertiesd of geomaterials, studying geomechanical, geodynamical and geophysical effects, development of mathematical modelling methods and problems of environmental geography. Hlavním cílem Workshopu bylo zveřejnit studium a práci doktorandů a jejich školitelů na Ústavu geoniky AV ČR.Témata presentují širokou rozmanitost problémů řešených na Ústavu geoniky. Problémy zahrnují vlastnosti geomateriálů, studování geomechanických, geodynamických a geofyzikálních vlivů, vývoj metod matematického modelování a problémy environmentální geografie.
