Women and local power: processes of mobilization and female political pathways in Turkey Type: Doctoral dissertation Author: Lucie Drechselová Institutions: Charles University and EHESS, Paris Year: 2018 Abstract This thesis focuses on the issue of women's under-representation in local politics in contemporary Turkey. The intermediary level of politics - party presence in municipalities - is studied with a double approach distinguishing among political parties (AKP, CHP, MHP, and the pro-Kurdish HDP & DBP) as well as among cities (Izmir, Trabzon and Diyarbakır). The Anglo-American body of literature in political sociology is put into dialogue with the French research in the fields of sociology of mobilization, of political elites and of institutions. Gendered perspective is transversal to the whole thesis. Field work was done in 2014, 2015 and 2016 in Izmir, Trabzon and Diyarbakır and took the form of non-participant observation and semi-directed interviews with two hundred female municipal councilors and women holding an intra- party office. Conceptually, seeing parties as heterogeneous entities allows us to study exchanges that take place within the party hierarchy. The place and role of women in the candidate selection processes questions the artificial separation between the "local" and the "national".... Působení politických stran na úrovni radnic je zkoumáno skrze dvojí perspektivu: ta rozlišuje jak mezi jednotlivými stranami (AKP, CHP, MHP, a pro-kurdskými HDP a DBP), tak mezi různými lokalitami (Izmir, Trabzon a Diyarbakır). Výzkumy vycházející z angloamerické sociologické tradice jsou provázány s francouzskými pracemi v oboru politické sociologie věnujícími se mobilizaci, politickým elitám a institucím. Genderová perspektiva prostupuje celou prací. Cinema seeks to recreate human experiences, expressing the relation we entertain with our reality. A film is not only the mechanical record of facts, but a visual manifestation of an interpretation of the world. But how does the spectator experience this specific form of expression of life itself? We propose an answer to this question through the point of view of the Husserlian philosophy. The focus of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology is not the description of things themselves, but of the structure of the subject's experience of them. His analysis aims at unveiling how reality appears to consciousness, manifesting a sense through this apparition. If we take films to be an expression of experience (of the filmmaker) through experience (of the spectator), then phenomenology becomes a particularly suitable perspective for understanding cinema. It enables the understanding both of how films manifest a sense of life and of how is structured the viewer's experience of this type of manifestation. Consequently, a Husserlian approach allows us to grasp the universality of filmic experiences: it is always a matter of a consciousness engaged in an act of apprehension of an object with the specific form and content. Résumé Le cinéma cherche à recréer des expériences humaines, en exprimant la relation que nous entretenons avec notre réalité. Mais comment le spectateur fait-il l'expérience de cette forme spécifique d'expression de la vie elle-même ? Nous proposons une réponse à cette question à travers le point de vue de la philosophie husserlienne. Phenomenology of Political Space Phenomenology of Political Space is an attempt to provide both a genealogical and a phenomenological account of a subject that philosophy rarely confronts, namely political space. Our analysis thus encompasses all the dimensions of political space-political, historical, geographical, and juridical-without dismissing any of them. It aims at showing the intrinsic connection between phenomenology and modern and contemporary political thought. It does so by identifying the two opposing models of political space, respectively shaped by Machiavelli and Hobbes{ XE "Hobbes" }, which we claim correspond to two opposing systems of visibility: a logic of appearance versus a logic of representation. It then moves to the contemporary phenomenological approach and gives both a phenomenology of movement and a phenomenology of political space. The central idea is the opposition, in modern and contemporary political thought, between appearance and representation, or in other words, between immediacy and mediation, as the terms are used respectively by Machiavelli and Hobbes, as well as by other authors who, in the twentieth century, studied their works (Maurice Merleau-Ponty{ XE "Merleau-Ponty" }, Jan Patočka{ XE "Patočka" }, Carl Schmitt{ XE "Schmitt" }). Il s'agit donc d'une thèse de philosophie contemporaine, pour ce qui concerne les auteurs étudiés, tandis que l'objet de notre recherche est politique - comme en témoigne le fait que même l'expression « espace politique » n'est pas utilisée dans le domaine philosophique. The main objective of this research is to look at the topic of everyday life from a dynamic perspective. The definition of everyday life that this thesis stands upon, i.e. the presence of a subject in the world with the other(s) outlines also two main sources of its dynamics: the world and the other. The essential aim of this thesis is to show that the different attitudes towards the world and the other in the works of Husserl and Lévinas consequently influence the understanding of the everyday life as such, as well as the requirements it imposes upon the subject. The chapter dedicated to Husserl presents his concept of the world as a horizon, the irreplaceable position of perception in our access to the world and the creation of the other within the subject itself. On the contrary, Lévinas stresses the separation of the subject and he understands the world and the other as inherently belonging to this never-ending process. The motive of dependence and responsibility of the subject for the other belongs to the most significant differences between the two philosophers. Whereas Husserl proposes us a subject in the world which he accesses via perception and in which he encounters the other, Lévinas shows us subject that is born to the pre-reflexive and intersubjective world from which he first has to... Hlavním cílem této práce je uchopit téma každodenního života z dynamického úhlu pohledu. Každodenní život definujeme jako přítomnost subjektu ve světě s druhým(-i) a tato charakteristika také určuje dva hlavní dynamické póly každodenního života: svět a druhého. Smyslem této disertace je ukázat, že právě odlišné postoje ke světu a k druhému v pracech Husserla a Lévinase následně zásadně ovlivňují pojetí každodenního života jako takového, stejně jako i nároky, které takováto pojetí poté kladou na subjekt. Kapitola věnovaná Husserlovi zdůrazňuje jeho pojetí světa jako horizontu, nenahraditelné postavení vnímání v našem přístupu ke světu a vznik jinakosti v jádru samotného subjektu. Oproti tomu Lévinas zdůrazňuje proces oddělení a zrození subjektu, přičemž svět a druhého chápe jako nedílné součásti tohoto nekonečného dění. Právě motivy závislosti a zodpovědnosti vůči jinakosti shledává tato práce jako zásadní rozdíl mezi Lévinasovým a Husserlovým přístupem. The Construction of Historical Reality in Jean Froissart's Chronicles Jean Froissart, one of the most famous chroniclers of the Middle Ages, is generally recognized for the literary qualities of his work, less so for the credibility of his account. In my research I have endeavoured to follow those scholars whose aim has been to rehabilitate the author by studying him not on the basis of principles which govern our contemporary understanding of history as an academic discipline, but rather on the basis of conceptual movements which conditioned historical writing in the 14th century, taking into account the traditions upon which medieval conception of history was built. Put differently, this work seeks to examine closely the "historical forge" of Jean Froissart. Clearly, Froissart's historical project falls within a specific discourse on historical genres, on relationships between form and truth which an account of deeds is expected to convey, on the manner in which the authority of a story being told is constructed. It is on the very intersection of this context, on the one hand, and the individuality of the author, on the other, that I based my search for the chronicler's perspectives on the writing of history. Froissart was from the outset concerned with the issues of impartiality and credibility... Náš výzkum se vydal po stopách badatelů, jejichž snaha směřovala k rehabilitaci tohoto autora : jeho studium nevychází z principů, které určují naše porozumění historii jakožto akademické disciplíně, nýbrž z konceptuálních proudů, které ovlivňovaly psaní dějin ve 14. století, přičemž je samozřejmě zapotřebí vzít v úvahu tradice, na nichž středověká historiografie spočívala. Jinými slovy, cílem naší práce bylo zkoumání Froissartovy "historické dílny". Historiografické dílo Jeana Froissarta je přirozeně zasazeno do určité dobové diskuze o historických žánrech, vztazích mezi formou a pravdou, jíž by vyprávění dějinných událostí mělo být nositelkou, o způsobech, jakým se utváří autorita historického příběhu. Naše zkoumání Froissartových perspektiv a pohledů na psaní historie vychází z průniku tohoto dobového kontextu na jedné straně a individualitou autora na straně druhé. PhDr. Aleš Pohorský, Csc ABSTRACT : This work aims to study the intersection of urban poetry produced by trips to Paris and Prague of artists who have contributed to the foundation of surrealism and by publication of their works in both cities. The travels of artists from Paris and Prague in each city allow encounters revealing artistic affinities. They promote aesthetic links and poetic exchanges between the founding artists of surrealism in Paris and Prague. The treatment of each capital through poetic transcriptions of stays in a foreign city and through works that reveals the possibilities of adventure in a familiar ciy leads to a comparaison of realities from Paris and Prague. The study of works makes possible to distinguish subjects circulating from a text to another and to put in light a common semiotic through witch appear features of surrealist city. The revival desire of avant-garde artists underlies that exploration of the city and contributes to the development of a subversive image of the city. PhDr. Aleš Pohorský, Csc AUTOR : Sophie Ireland ABSTRAKT : Tato práce si stanovuje za cíl studovat křížení městské poetiky, jež nastávalo jak cestami umělců, kteří se podíleli na vzniku surrealismu, do Paříže a Prahy, tak vydáváním jejich děl v obou městech. Cesty Pražanů a Pařížanů do obou měst jsou příležitostí k setkávání a k utváření vzájemného uměleckého souznění. Umožňují estetické sbližování a navazují poetická pouta mezi zakladateli surrealismu v Paříži i v Praze. Zachycení každého z obou hlavních měst v poetických přepisech pobytů v cizím městě, jakož i v dílech odhalujících možná dobrodružství ve městě autorům důvěrně známém, přispívá k srovnání pařížské a pražské reality. Studium jejich děl umožňuje postihnout stěhování motivů z jednoho textu do druhého a odhalit společnou sémiotiku, jejímž prostřednictvím se vytvářejí charakteristiky surrealistického města. Objevování města je doprovázeno touhou avantgardních umělců po obnově a přispívá ke zpracování jeho subverzívního obrazu.
