Zrození lidu v české kultuře 19. století. Sborník příspěvků z 39. ročníku mezioborového sympozia k problematice 19. století
Machalíková, Pavla; Petrasová, Taťána; Winter, Tomáš
2020 - Czech
The theme of the nascent country folk in the Czech culture of the 19-th century does not concert only the past but has strong resonances also in the present. Since the 19-th century there has been arising a rather stereotype concept about the character, protagonists, and importance of the phenomane of folk culture. On the other hand, artistic reflection of traditional folk culture testifies to the variety of inspirations offered by this environment. The essays collected in the book grasp the phenomena from interdisciplinary points of view. Keywords: country folk; rural themes; folk art and culture Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Slezská identita: metodologickému nacionalizmu navzdory
Wyss, Johana
2020 - Czech
In this article, the author illustrates how and why does Silesian identity pose a challenge to the assumption that a fixed ethno-national identity is a natural and necessary form of a modern society and an indispensable analytic unit. Keywords: silesian identity; methodological nationalism; cultural hybridity Available at various institutes of the ASCR

The publication is the latest in the series of proceedings based on materials from Central European protohistoric conferences Archaeology of Barbarians. For the most part, the studies published here are a revised text of the lectures given at the 2015 conference Archaeology of Barbarian at the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach in Lower Austria. The main theme of the conference was the Celts and Germanic tribes in the Middle Danube Region in archaeological and numismatic sources (2nd century BC - 2nd century AD), but space was also given to other phenomena of protohistoric development. Intensive discussions included, among other things, absolute and relative chronology of transitional horizons, issues of monetization and testimony of numismatic groups, military, economic and diplomatic interactions along the north-south axis of the region and other sub-themes. For most of these questions, readers will find relevant studies in the present proceedings, which contains a total of 18 studies by authors from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Germany. Keywords: proceedings; protohistory; Middle Danube Region; archaeology; numismatics; Ancient history Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Quantitative Approaches to Versification
Plecháč, Petr; Barry, P.; Skulacheva, T.; Bermúdez-Sabel, H.; Kolár, Robert
2019 - English
This volume presents a wide range of quantitative approaches to versification. It comprises various methodological perspectives ranging from simple descriptive statistics to advanced machine learning methods (such as support vector machines, random forests or neural networks) as well as material covering a large span of time and languages: from very ancient versifications (Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittie, Ancient Greek), through medieval (Old English, Old Icelandic, Old Saxon) and Renaissance verse to modern experiments (free verse, concrete poetry), from English and Russian through Spanish and German to Portuguese and Catalan. Not only written, but also spoken poetry has been analyzed. The book covers multiple topics. What they all share in common is that versification is being studied in the context of other linguistic phenomena that may affect or determine it. Analyses of large corpora go hand in hand with comparative approaches. It is shown that quantitative approaches can be used for the purpose of authorship attribution, to build reasonable typologies as well as to understand why certain forms play such a dominant roles in our cultural tradition(s). Keywords: versification; quantitative verse studies; prosody Fulltext is available at external website.

A Stranger of the House - the Crossroads III
Mlynářová, J.; Kilani, M.; Alivernini, Sergio
2019 - English
The Crossroads III – A Stranger in the House. Foreigners in Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Societies of the Bronze Age conference has been held at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (Prague) between September 10 and 13, 2018. The main objective of the conference was to enhance our understanding of “foreignness” in ancient societies between the end of the Chalcolithic period and the end of the Late Bronze Age. This book collects some of the twenty most significant contributions presented at the conference. Some authors decided to approach the discussion from a theoretical perspective, or to present and discuss theoretical frameworks that could be used to explore at least some elements underlying the concept of “foreignness”. Others investigated sociocultural dimension involved in the presence of foreigners, or in their interactions with local communities. Cases from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and the Levant, covering the whole of the Bronze Age have been discussed. The wide range of perspectives, and their combination within the frame of the conference often stimulated that multidisciplinary dialogue that was the primary aim of this third edition of Crossroads Keywords: emigration and immigration; immigrants; aliens; social structure; social mobility; bronze age; ancient Egypt; Middle East Available at various institutes of the ASCR
