2019 - English
Atmospheric aerosols influence Earth’s climatic system and human health. Role of aerosols in climatic system still includes uncertainties strongly influencing model simulations (Zhao et al. \n2018). One of the uncertainties is caused by secondary aerosol formation and their consequent growth. Nucleation of aerosol particles is a process determined by presence of aerosol precursors in atmosphere and by ambient atmospheric conditions (Dada et al. 2017). \nSince new particle formation (NPF) events have been observed in many types of environment (Kulmala et al. 2004), we have focused on NPF events at background station in the Czech Republic, representative for central European region. In this study we investigate NPF process of aerosol clusters from 1.2 nm in size.\n Keywords: particle formation; particle measurement; Atmospheric boundary layer; NAOK Available in a digital repository NRGL

Integrovaná regulace plevelů v obilninách
Smutný, V.; Winkler, J.; Klem, Karel
2018 - Czech
Certified methodology summarized knowledge about the impact of different non-direct (preventive) agronomic measures (crop rotations, soil tillage, fertilization using organic fertilizers and straw management) on weeds (weed seedbank and actual weed infestation), from qualitative (weed specie composition) and quantitative (intensity occurrence) point of view). There is also particular focus on rationalization of chemical methods of weed management (herbicide application). Principles of decision-making rules based on establishment of economic thresholds, optimal timing of application and optimization of herbicide doses. There is a potential for decrease of applied herbicides in cereals using of this approach, which brings not only considerable economic savings, but also reduction of negative environmental effect caused by herbicide use.\n\n Keywords: Weeds; integrated plant protection; cereals; decision making Fulltext is available at external website.

2018 - Czech
This methodology summarises findings from a comparison of three perspective methods of fungal disease detection applicable for remote sensing and plant phenotyping of fungal disease resistance. These methods are spectral reflectance, infrared thermal imaging, and blue-green fluorescence imaging. On the example of winter wheat infection with powdery mildew, stripe rust and brown rust the strengths and weaknesses of individual methods were demonstrated. From these results it is evident that all three methods are potentially applicable for non-destructive fungal disease detection, but their practical use may vary. Testing of spectral reflectance indices for the detection of fungal diseases showed particularly the high detection reliability of the red-edge and green band based spectral vegetation indices. Infrared thermal imaging has shown high detection accuracy for powdery mildew and brown rust, but lower for stripe rust. Blue-green fluorescence and thermal imaging seems to be also a very promising tools for evaluating the intensity and spatial distribution of infection on a leaf level. Keywords: infrared thermography; blue-green fluorescence; winter wheat; Triticum aestivum; fungal plant diseases; powdery mildew; stripe rust; brown rust; etection methods; diagnostic methods; non-destructive detection Fulltext is available at external website.

Effects of urbanization on the landscape of a Modern City in Ghana: A case study of sunyani
Boateng, K. A.; Mensah, Caleb; Agyei, Thomas; Švik, Marian
2018 - English
According to the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, changes in land use through urbanization and agriculture are the key anthropogenic effects of climate change. Thus, the preservation of natural environment of urban areas is essential for conserving water and soil, while still adjusting the microclimatic variables (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, etc.) and stabilizing the natural ecological system from destruction. It has been observed that most parts of city's green vegetation have been lost due to housing developments and commercial activities. This study was carried out to assess the effect of the change in land use on a modern city like Sunyani, by observing the significant changes in vegetation cover from LANDSAT TM imagery over a 31-year period (1986-2017). From the study, there was significant decline of vegetation cover from 1986 to 1999, and no significant change from 1999 to 2017. There were also significant changes in the built-up areas from 1986 to 1999 and no significant change from 1999 to 2017. Adoption of sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies that maintain open green vegetation is recommended for future city planning. Keywords: Climate change; Green vegetation; landsat; Open green spaces; Urbanization Fulltext is available at external website.

Characterization of equivalent black carbon (ebc) at a regional backgound site in Central Europe: Variability and source identification
Mbengue, Saliou; Šerfözö, Norbert; Holubová Šmejkalová, Adéla; Holoubek, Ivan
2018 - English
Black carbon (BC) is recognized to play an important role on adverse public health and in the Earth’s climate system (Bond et al., 2013). It is the most efficient light-absorbing aerosol species in the visible spectrum emitted as primary pollutant from a variety of combustion related sources. Although measurements of Equivalent Black Carbon (EBC) with multiple wavelength aethalometer have been used to provide insights regarding the influence of fossil fuel (traffic emissions) and wood smoke in ambient air (Sandradewi et al., 2008, Vaishya et al 2017), scarce studies have been reported in Eastern Central Europe using real-time EBC measurements.\nThis study focuses on the seasonal, diurnal and weekly trends of EBC at a regional background site in Central Europe during a 5-year measurement. Our aim is to identify the potential sources of EBC, especially the influence from fossil fuel and biomass burning. Keywords: Equivalent Black Carbon; 7-wavelength aethalometer; Ångström absorption exponent; Delta-C; BC variability and sources Fulltext is available at external website.

Hodnocení zdravotního stavu lesních porostů v České republice pomocí satelitních dat Sentinel-2
Lukeš, Petr; Strejček, R.; Křístek, Š.; Mlčoušek, M.
2018 - Czech
Předkládaná metodika má za cíl navrhnout komplexní systém celoplošného hodnocení zdravotního stavu lesních porostů České republiky na základě analýzy satelitních dat Sentinel2. Metodika řeší celý proces od zpracování zdrojových satelitních dat pomocí zcela nového přístupu založeného na využití všech dostupných satelitních pozorování a jejich zpracování do formy bezoblačných mozaik České republiky za využití přístupu analýzy velkých dat. V\nnásledném kroku jsou produkty odvozené z těchto bezoblačných mozaik (vegetační indexy a jiné analýzy obrazu) porovnány s rozsáhlou databází pozemního šetření zdravotního stavu lesních porostů (hodnoty indexu listové plochy vzorkované v rámci vývoje metodiky - dále LAI, databáze defoliací porostů ICPForests, hyperspektrální letecká data pro vybrané zájmové území, globální databáze detekce těžby). This methodology aims to design a comprehensive system of nationwide assessment of the state of health of the Czech Republic based on Sentinel-2 satellite data analysis. The methodology addresses the entire process from the pre-processing of source satellite data using a novel approaches based on analysis of all-available satellite observations and their processing in the form of cloud-free mosaics of the Czech Republic using big data approach. In the next step, the products derived from cloud-free mosaics (vegetation indexes and other image analysis) are compared against extensive database of ground survey of forest health status (values of the leaf area index sampled as part of the development of the methodology - further denoted as LAI, database of tree defoliation ICPForests, airborne hyperspectral data acquired for selected study area, global forest losses database). For products with the best relationship to in-situ data, a predictive statistical model to yield LAI from satellite observations is developed. Forest health status is evaluated on the basis of yearly changes of the LAI values for cloud-free mosaics generated in the vegetation maximum. Individual pixels are classified into four health classes according to LAI growth rate or decrease in the observed period. The final assessment of the state of health is applied at the cadastral level, where each cadastral area is classified into four health classes based on the fraction of the lowest health status stands with significant LAI decrease to the total forest cover for stands up to 80 years of age Keywords: forests; health status; satellite data; Sentinel-2; leaf area index; monitoring Available in digital repository of the ASCR

Response of aerosol concentrations to the daily atmospheric boundary layer variability at the national atmospheric observatory Košetice
Holubová Šmejkalová, Adéla; Zíková, Naděžda; Ždímal, Vladimír; Komínková, Kateřina; Holoubek, Ivan
2018 - English
The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is the part of the troposphere directly influenced by the properties of the Earth’s surface. The ABL thickness reaches from hundreds of meters to a few kilometres. The daily cycle of the ABL height is primarily result of interaction between incoming solar radiation and Earth’s surface heat fluxes because a turbulent motion is dominant in this layer. Air pollutants are generally emitted from surface and their measured concentrations are also influenced by dilution of the atmosphere, or ABL thickness. This study is focused on the linkage between the diurnal ABL height evolution and aerosol particle number concentrations. Keywords: Atmospheric boundary layer; Aerosol total number concentrations; Polynomial regression Available in a digital repository NRGL

Highly time resolved measurement of atmospheric elemental and organic carbon at a typical background site in Central Europe.
Mbengue, Saliou; Fusek, M.; Schwarz, Jaroslav; Holoubek, Ivan
2017 - English
Atmospheric organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon play an important role in atmospheric chemistry, climate change and public health. There have been relatively few studies dealing with EC and OC in rural background sites which are less influenced by urban and industrial emissions. Nevertheless, measurements at background areas are important for understanding the transport and transformation characteristics of anthropogenic air pollutants, and their effects on various aspects of regional and global environment changes. In this study, we focus on variability of EC and OC concentrations (considering various day categories and seasons) from a rural background site which is representative for Central European rural areas.\n Keywords: organic carbon and elemental carbon; rural background; OC/EC ratio; variability Fulltext is available at external website.

Monitorování koeficientu rozptylu světla na aerosolových částicích na pozaďové stanici Košetice
Holubová Šmejkalová, Adéla; Zíková, Naděžda; Ždímal, Vladimír; Holoubek, Ivan
2017 - Czech
The direct effect of the atmospheric aerosols to radiation balance is the scattering or absorption of light on these particles. While solar radiation on aerosol particles or clouds negatively affects the radiation (resulting in cooling), absorbtion causes increasing of the ambient air temperature. Contribution to the study of the effect of aerosol particles on the climate, a measurement of the coefficient of light scattering is carry out at the Kosetice background station. The Integrating Nefelometer measures at 3-wavelength (RGB) forward and back light scattering. The values of the scattering coefficient at 550 nm (green) are typically high in the cold part of the year, reflecting both increased concentrations of pollutants and stable atmospheric conditions. Daily variability is the smallest in summer (varies between 25 and 18 Mm-1), the most noticeable daily variation is observed in the spring, when stable values 44 Mm-1 drop after noon to 26 Mm-1. The calculation of Ångström's exponent showed that in the summer, the fine fraction dominates in the sampled air. Keywords: light scattering; aerosol particles; atmospheric station Košetice Fulltext is available at external website.
