Dynamic conditional correlation models and their application to portfolio risk mitigation
Ševčík, Martin; Frýd, Lukáš; Nevrla, Matěj
2017 - English
This bachelor thesis investigates asymmetry in returns of corn, gold and crude oil (both spot and futures) and hedging effectiveness of these commodities when employing DCC family models for hedge ratio estimation. The asymmetry in conditional variances was found to be significant only in case of crude oil spot and futures returns and asymmetry in conditional correlation of spot and futures returns was not shown to be significant in neither of the investigated commodities. With respect to the hedging performance, we conclude that differences in hedging performance measured by hedging effectiveness index are negligible and thus do not support superiority of DCC family models over OLS, which served as a benchmark. Historical Value at Risk, on the contrary, identified the DCC with asymmetry in conditional variance (despite asymmetry not being significant) to be appropriate for corn hedging, however not for the other two commodities, where the OLS based hedge ratio performed similarly or even better than the DCC family models. The main contribution of the thesis thus lays in empirical investigation of asymmetry in returns of selected commodities and testing hedging potential of DCC family based hedge ratio. THE VALUE OF STATISTICAL LIFE IN THE CZECH LABOR MARKET
Albrechtová, Aneta; Dušek, Libor; Janíčko, Martin
2017 - English
This thesis calculates the value of statistical life (VSL) in the Czech Republic based on estimation of fatal risk computed across occupation within industries. Using the regression analysis, I estimate the impact of the fatal risk on wage. From this I calculate the VSL using the hedonic wage model. I use randomized wage data sample with 150 000 observations from the year 2013 combined with injury data from the years 2013-2015. Based on this data I estimated the VSL to be in a range between 6 965 277CZK (260 092EURO) and 37 355 674CZK (1. 394mil.EURO) based on statistically significant estimates of fatal risk. Furthermore, I estimate my model of fatal risk calculated across industries to compare the impact of the level of risk in the computation. This regression indicates that estimates based on risk in industries are overestimated. My results show that the method of risk computation is a key factor affecting the VSL. Statistical Arbitrage in Algorithmic Trading of US Bonds
Juhászová, Jana; Stádník, Bohumil; Janda, Karel
2017 - English
This thesis deals with statistical arbitrage as a strategy applied in algorithmic trading of US Treasury bonds in the selected timeframe from 1980 until 2017. Our aim is to prove that a specific event on the treasury market, namely reopening of the bonds, constitutes an arbitrage opportunity that enables the investor to systematically yield extraordinary profits on the market. This thesis includes a theoretical introduction to algorithmic trading and statistical arbitrage. Based on this introduction we formulate hypotheses, which are then tested in the application part by constructing an algorithm that simulates a trading strategy on historical data. Comparing three strategies we determined that this strategy is meaningful, or performs better than a random walk and that it is profitable. Observing the Unobservable: Education and Signaling in Middle-Income Countries
Kashkarov, Daniil; Špecián, Petr; Chytilová, Helena
2017 - English
Regresní model využívá přirozené logaritmy hodinových mezd vysvětlované délkou vzdělání, zkušeností, měřítky zaměstnaneckých dispozic (aptitude) a interakčními termíny zkušenost-vzdělání a zkušenost-dispozice. The thesis examines the role of education signaling in dealing with information asymmetry on labor markets of lower-middle-income countries. The original hypothesis states that signaling component of education has significant effect on hiring decisions and wages in this group of states. To test the hypothesis, the model of employer learning is launched on individual cross-section data for four lower-middle-income countries: Armenia, Bolivia, Ghana and Vietnam. The natural logarithms of hourly wages are regressed on years of education, experience, measures of employees' aptitude, education-experience and aptitude-experience interaction terms. Maximum of parents' education, self-reported cognitive skills score and job-related skills score are used as proxies for workers' ability. No reliable evidence of education signaling being applied on labor markets of the studied countries was found, although information asymmetry is present. Is Russia sick with Dutch Disease?
Abdullaeva, Nadiia; Máslo, Lukáš; Prokop, Jaromír
2017 - English
The aim of this work is to prove a hypothesis whether Russia is sick with Dutch disease or not. In the theoretical part, the author expounds the model of Dutch disease by Corden, Neary (1982) and places the phenomenon into a historical perspective. Further on, the author identifies four main symptoms of the Dutch disease, i. e. an increasing dependence of a country on the export of natural resources, appreciation of the real exchange rate, a decline of the manufacturing sector and a growth of the service sector and, finally, an overall wage growth. In the empirical part, the author tests the presence of the particular symptoms of the Dutch disease in the Russian economy on the data set for the years 1998-2015, drawing upon the research of Oomes, Kalcheva (2007) and extending it by adding the symptom of increasing dependence of a country on the export of natural resources (the 1st symptom) and by prolonging the time series until 2015. The author presents her own multiple regression model with the dependent variable of real effective exchange rate and independent variables interest rate, oil prices and government expenditures, proving a positive correlation of 83% between the real effective exchange rate and oil price. Next, the author proves that the service sector and the natural resource sector increased their respective shares of the GDP in the economy by 6 and 5 percentage points between 2000-2015, while the manufacturing sector decreased almost by the 9 percentage points. By this, the author supports the assumption about the ongoing indirect deindustrialization process and, in effect, supports her assumption about the presence of the third symptom. 2017 - English
The financial state of the most companies was significantly challenged by the last decade. Thus, financial managers must be aware of all factors that can contribute to the firm`s profitability in order to fight unstable economical environment. Working capital management`s effect on profitability has been raised recently and its importance is already known. This thesis aims to dig deeper into the relationship between working capital management and firm`s profitability across different sectors and different time periods. The subject for the empirical analysis are 908 UK manufacturing and 315 construction firms during the period of 2006-2013. The results indicate about the strong negative relationship between working capital, measured as cash conversion cycle (CCC) and gross operating profitability. Thus, it is an indicator that working capital and its characteristics must be included in the firm`s financial planning.
