Detailed Investigation of Human Galectins -1 and -3 by employing selectively deoxyfluorinated N-acetyllactosamines
Kurfiřt, Martin
2023 - English
This work is focused on a detailed investigation of supramolecular recognition events between human galectins -1 and -3 and monodeoxyfluorinated N-acetyllactosamine probes, which were previously prepared in our laboratory. The recognition was studied using a combination of X-ray crystallography, isothermal titration calorimetry and several advanced NMR techniques, such as 19F T2-filter, 1H–1H STD, 1H–15N CSP or 19F EXSY. These techniques provided insight into the thermodynamics and kinetics of recognition and enabled us to uncover of subtle differences between both investigated galectins. Such differences could be potentially exploited in the selective targeting of individual galectins with important implications for the galectins-focused\npharmaceutic industry. Keywords: galectins; NMR techniques; pharmaceutic industry Available in a digital repository NRGL

The electrodiffusional theory for wall shear stress measurement by a two-strip probe: a journey to near-wall region hydrodynamics
Harrandt, Václav
2023 - English
This contribution deals with a new theory describing mass transport in the vicinity of the measuring two-segment strip probe. Analytical formulas for the mass transfer coefficients of the front and the rear electrodes were derived. At the same time, the correctness of these formulas was confirmed by the numerical solution of the convectiondiffusion transport equation. Keywords: transport phenomena; electrodes; wall shear stress Available in a digital repository NRGL

3D Printed Microfluidic Cell for Spectroelectrochemical Analysis
Šikula, M.; Vaněčková, Eva; Hromadová, Magdaléna; Kolivoška, Viliam
2023 - English
Recent advances in fused deposition modeling 3D printing (FDM 3DP) enabled \nthe manufacture of customized spectroelectrochemical (SEC) devices. Despite significant progress, \nreported designs still rely on conventional optical components (windows and cuvettes). In this \nwork, we apply bi-material FDM 3DP combining electrically conductive and optically \ntranslucent filaments to manufacture a fully integrated microfluidic SEC device. Employing cyclic \nvoltammetric measurements with redox probes, we demonstrate that the platform allows SEC sensing of \nreactants, intermediates, and products of charge transfer reactions in an oxygen- free \nenvironment. Developed approaches pave the way for SEC d vices with dramatically\nreduced costs compared to currently available commercial platforms.\n Keywords: spectroelectrochemistry; three-dimensional printing; fused deposition modeling Available on request at various institutes of the ASCR

Electrochemical Properties of Mixed Self-Assembled Monolayers Based on Terpyridine Transition Metal Complexes

2023 - English
This work presents the electrochemical characterization of mixed self-assembled monolayers\n(SAMs) of [Os(terpy)2]2+ and terpyridine connected by tripodal anchoring groups to the\npolycrystalline gold bead electrode and provides a comparison with SAM based on\n[Os(terpy)2]2+ tripodal molecules without diluting terpyridine tripodal molecules. It is shown\nthat both arrangements enable reproducible preparation of well-defined compact films. The\nelectron transfer rate constant for mixed SAM was determined from cyclic voltammograms\naccording to Laviron’s analysis and compared with the rate constant obtained previously for\nSAM containing only [Os(terpy)2]2+ tripod. Keywords: transition metal complexes; terpyridine; tripodal anchor Available on request at various institutes of the ASCR

Elimination Voltammetry with Linear Scan: Advantages and Disadvantages
Navrátil, Tomáš; Trnková, L.; Hrdlička, Vojtěch; Li, X.
2023 - English
Elimination voltammetry with linear scan (EVLS) represents an almost traditional\nmathematical method that helps to obtain additional and detailed information about the recorded\nelectrochemical signals and therefore, to better understand the analyzed systems. Although it\nhas been substantially developed and expanded during its existence of more than a quarter of a\ncentury and has found many areas of application, like any other mathematical and experimental\nmethod, it exhibits several advantages and disadvantages. In this contribution, we summarize\nits strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, as well as threats.\n Keywords: elimination voltammetry with linear scan; advantages; disadvantages Available on request at various institutes of the ASCR

Influence of recreational activities on the distribution of forest wild boar rooting
Drimaj, J.; Balková, M.; Špoula, J.; Kamler, J.; Mikulka, O.; Plhal, R.; Homolka, Miloslav
2023 - English
The wild boar is a widely distributed and locally very numerous animal. The same is true in the conditions of Central Europe. Outside the growing season, it concentrates in forests, where it also actively searches for food sources. During this activity, it disturbs the soil surface, thereby significantly affecting the dynamics of the ecosystem. From an economic point of view, it limits the natural renewal of tree species, but from an ecological point of view, it changes habitat conditions and thus helps to increase biodiversity. Factors influencing the distribution of rooting across forest stands may be different. In this paper, we focused on the human factor and its influence on the rooting activity of wild boar in the Hodonínská Dúbrava, National natural monuments. Keywords: animal activity; disturbance; diversity; soil surface; wildlife Fulltext is available at external website.

2023 - English
NIVB Meeting 2023 – the second meeting of the National Institute of Virology and Bacteriology (NIVB) in Kutná Hora on 2. 10. – 5. 10. 2023 will be again after one year an opportunity to meet the participating teams, discuss excellent science, establish collaborations, and present the progress of the project to the members of the International Scientific Advisory Board. Thanks to funding from the Czech Economic Recovery Plan, a number of important results have already been published in high impact journals. Several networking workshops have been organized and scientific collaborations have been established. The meeting in Kutná Hora is therefore a summary of all that has happened in the project over the past year. The main goal of the NIVB is to facilitate cooperation between 30 participating research teams from 8 Czech research institutions, and this goal is gradually being achieved. The NIVB acts as a common communication platform to discuss the desired cooperation of the NIVB research teams, especially those that have not had much contact so far due to their inter-institutional, interdisciplinary or inter-regional distance.\nWe thank all the participants who contributed to the meeting with 30 oral presentations and 67 posters. The NIVB 2022 meeting had the ambition to launch a new series of annual meetings dedicated to virology and bacteriology, and NIVB 2023 fulfils this ambition and continues to aim to inform the wider scientific community about new developments, trends and issues in these disciplines.
