Implementation of wall functions into a hybrid fictitious domain-immersed boundary method
Kubíčková, Lucie; Isoz, Martin
2023 - English
Hybrid fictitious domain-immersed boundary method (HFDIB) is a simulation approach used in computational fluid dynamics. The approach avoids usage of complex geometry-conforming computational domains. Instead, a simple domain is used and the geometry is projected onto it by a scalar field and adjustment of governing equations. Hence, the time spent on mesh generation is substantially reduced. It is advantageous to use the HFDIB in geometry optimizations where it allows for a massive optimization speed-up. Nevertheless, there is a problem with simulation of the fluid behavior in the boundary layer in the vicinity of the immersed walls. Especially, in simulation of highly turbulent flows, where the boundary layer is very thin and the usage of finer mesh is unaffordable. In this work, we aim to solve this problem by implementation of Reynolds averaged turbulence models in our custom HFDIB variant. In particular, we implemented the k-ω turbulence model and blended wall functions for closure variables and velocity. Model order reduction of transport-dominated systems with rotations using shifted proper orthogonal decomposition and artificial neural networks
Kovárnová, A.; Isoz, Martin
2023 - English
In the present work, we concentrate on particle-laden flows as an example of industry-relevant transport-dominated systems. Our previously-developed framework for data-driven model order reduction (MOR) of such systems, the shifted proper orthogonal decomposition with interpolation via artificial neural networks, is further extended by improving the handling of general transport operators. First, even with intrusive MOR approaches, the underlying numerical solvers can provide only discrete realizations of transports linked to the movement of individual particles in the system. On the other hand, our MOR methodology requires continuous transport operators. Thus, the original framework was extended by the possibility to reconstruct continuous approximations of known discrete transports via another artificial neural network. Second, the treatment of rotation-comprising transports was significantly improved. Keywords: model order reduction; CFD; shifted POD Fulltext is available at external website.

Development, validation, and application of a solver for non-isothermal non-adiabatic packed bed reactors
Hlavatý, Tomáš; Isoz, Martin; Khýr, M.
2023 - English
Packed bed reactors are the most frequently used devices to perform heterogeneously catalyzed reactions on industrial scales. The main contribution of our work is the development of a numerical model applicable to simulations of such reactors. The developed model is based on the finite volume method, couples the momentum, mass and energy balances, and is free of any empirical closures. As such, the solver falls into the domain of the direct numerical simulation. In the talk, we will (i) present the new solver fundamental working principles, (ii) report on the verication of each of the solver components against existing literature data and (iii) demonstrate an application of the solver on an industrially relevant case of ethylene oxichlorination performed in a tubular reactor packed with Raschig rings coated by CuCl2 catalyst. Keywords: CFD; oxichlorination; heterogenous catalysis Fulltext is available at external website.

We prove an asymptotic version of a tree-containment conjecture of Klimošová, Piguet and Rozhoň [European J. Combin. 88 (2020), 103106] for graphs with quadratically many edges. The result implies that the asymptotic version of the Erdős-Sós conjecture in the setting of dense graphs is correct. Available in digital repository of the ASCR

Dynamics of surface water quality changes in model headwater areas of the Czech Republic
Fraindová, K.; Matoušková, M.; Kliment, Z.; Vlček, Lukáš; Vlach, V.; Šajnarová, L.
2023 - English
River headwaters have a high environmental value. Unfortunately, the biogeochemical processes in headwaters in context of different rainfall-runoff conditions and specific land cover have not been fully examined. This study focuses on changes in correlations of 16 biogeochemical parameters related to different types of rainfall-runoff events and land cover condition for eight headwater catchments in Central Europe. Multiple methods as linear regression, Spearman rank correlation, Principal Components Analysis and C/Q hysteresis loops revealed main relationships. Presence of peatlands and waterlogged spruce forests had decisive influence on the biogeochemistry (mainly for CODMn, humins, Fe, P-PO43− TP, and N-NO3−). The strongest positive correlation of organic matter (CODMn) and Fe is represented in a catchment with the largest area of damaged forest (70%), but with a smaller proportion of wetlands (8%). High flow rates influence the release of greater amounts of organic matter and N-NO3−. Keywords: headwater areas; organic matter; waterlogged areas; peatbogs; raifall-runoff events; water quality; electric conductivity Fulltext is available at external website.

Validace reanalýzy pro střední Evropu PERUN/Reanalysis
Beranová, Romana; Rulfová, Zuzana; Sokol, Zbyněk
2023 - Czech
PERUN/Reanalysis is based on the ALADIN numerical forecast model, which has been adapted for climatological calculations. To serve as one of the reference sets for estimating expected climate changes in the coming decades, it needs to undergo validation against station measurements and possibly against other commonly used data sets. In this conference paper, we will examine the validation of basic meteorological quantities across the computational domain of the ALADIN model. To achieve this, we will use station data from the ECA&D database, station data in the regular network (Eobs), and the ERA5 global reanalysis. Validation will be conducted for the period from 1990 to 2014. During validation, our primary focus will be on air temperature (minimum, maximum, and mean) and precipitation. We will also examine additional variables, including wind speed.\n Keywords: NWP model; reanalysis; validation Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Weather reanalyses are a powerful tool for studying historical weather both at individual points and especially over an area. The detailed reanalysis produced by the PERUN\nproject thus makes it possible to reveal various aspects of the atmosphere to a degree that we are unable to achieve with measurements. Since it is still a model approximation, it is of course necessary to detect systematic biases by verification before its use. Climate model runs, on the other hand, can uncover the future evolution of the atmosphere. Since these calculations cannot yet be verified, it is necessary to validate a historical run of the same model and subtract the revealed systematic errors from the future projections. In the PERUN project, both the historical run and two climate runs up to 2100 have been calculated. In this work, we present a basic verification and validation of the precipitation forecasts and an evaluation of the separation of precipitation into stratiform and convective precipitation and, in addition, into\nliquid and solid precipitation. Texture Spectral Similarity Criteria Comparison
Havlíček, Michal; Haindl, Michal
2023 - English
Criteria capable of texture spectral similarity evaluation are presented and compared. From the fifteen evaluated criteria, only four criteria guarantee zero or minimal spectral ranking errors. Such criteria can support texture modeling algorithms by comparing the modeled texture with corresponding synthetic simulations. Another possible application is the development of texture retrieval, classification, or texture acquisition system. These criteria thoroughly test monotonicity and mutual correlation on specifically designed extensive monotonously degrading experiments. Statistical Method Selection Matters: Vanilla Methods in Regression May Yield Misleading Results
Kalina, Jan
2023 - English
The primary aim of this work is to illustrate the importance of the choice of the appropriate methods for the statistical analysis of economic data. Typically, there exist several alternative versions of common statistical methods for every statistical modeling task\nand the most habitually used (“vanilla”) versions may yield rather misleading results in nonstandard situations. Linear regression is considered here as the most fundamental econometric model. First, the analysis of a world tourism dataset is presented, where the number of international arrivals is modeled for 140 countries of the world as a response of 14 pillars (indicators) of the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index. Heteroscedasticity is clearly recognized in the dataset. However, the Aitken estimator, which would be the standard remedy in such a situation, is revealed here to be very inappropriate. Regression quantiles represent a much more suitable solution here. The second illustration with artificial data reveals standard regression quantiles to be unsuitable for data contaminated by outlying values. Their recently proposed robust version turns out to be much more appropriate. Both\nillustrations reveal that choosing suitable methods represent an important (and often difficult) part of the analysis of economic data. Bohl-Marek decomposition applied to a class of biochemical networks with conservation properties

2023 - English
This study presents an application of one special technique, further called as Bohl-Marek decomposition, related to the mathematical modeling of biochemical networks with mass conservation properties. We continue in direction of papers devoted to inverse problems of parameter estimation for mathematical models describing the drug-induced enzyme production networks [3]. However, being aware of the complexity of general physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models, here we focus on the case of enzyme-catalyzed reactions with a substrate transport chain [5]. Although our ultimate goal is to develop a reliable method for fitting the model parameters to given experimental data, here we study certain numerical issues within the framework of optimal experimental design [6]. Before starting an experiment on a real biochemical network, we formulate an optimization problem aiming to maximize the information content of the corresponding experiment. For the above-sketched optimization problem, the computational costs related to the two formulations of the same biochemical network, being (i) the classical formulation x˙(t) = Ax(t) + b(t) and (ii) the 'quasi-linear' Bohl-Marek formulation x˙M(t) = M(x(t)) xM(t), can be determined and compared. Keywords: Mathematical modeling; Biochemical network; Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models Fulltext is available at external website.
