Ambient organic aerosol origin at rural background site in the Czech Republic
Lhotka, Radek
2022 - English
Source apportionment of organic aerosols (OA) at background sites is one of the important tasks of the current air quality protection. OA are emitted directly from primary sources or formed in the atmosphere via the oxidation of gas-phase precursors with subsequent partitioning resulting in low-volatility products into the particle phase. Keywords: organic aerosol; air quality protection; ural background site Available in a digital repository NRGL

2022 - English
This study assesses the variability of organic aerosol (OA) sources monitored at the rural background site Frýdlant. Non-refractory PM1 was evaluated in two seasons of\n2021. The positive matrix factorization with the multi-linear engine was used to determine the sources of OA at Frýdlant site, with four factors resolved both in winter and\nsummer. An Improved Method for Calculation of the Wet Particle Diameter and tha Kappa Parameters from the CCN Data
Wagner, Zdeněk; Mishra, Gaurav; Moravec, Pavel; Zíková, Naděžda
2022 - English
The study of particle size distribution and hygroscopic growth is important for several reasons. Particle diameter is available experimentally, but the relationship of \nhygroscopic growth to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and AMS data can be modeled mathematically. In this paper, we present an improved algorithm for calculating the wet \nparticle diameter and the κ parameter that is faster, more accurate, and more reliable than the algorithm used by other authors.\n Keywords: critical diameter; wet particle diameter; CCN Available in a digital repository NRGL

Deoxyfluorinated N-acetyllactosamines as carbohydrate-based probes for human galectins
Kurfiřt, Martin
2022 - English
This work is focused on a detailed NMR investigation of human galectins via a complete series of mono-deoxyfluorinated Nacetyllactosamine probes 1–6, which were prepared previously in our laboratory.3 Advanced 19F NMR T2-filter technique enabled the identification of hydroxyl groups essential for the interaction with varioushGals, and permitted to compare hGals in terms of the importance of these key hydroxyl groups in the recognition events. Furthermore, the library was also investigated by various NMR techniques such as 19F EXSY, STD and 15N CSP to reveal the molecular origin of recognition events.\n Keywords: human galectins; NMR techniques; selective inhibitors Available in a digital repository NRGL

Hybrid organometallic galectin inhibitors
Hamala, Vojtěch
2022 - English
Galectins are lectin-type proteins defined by their sequence homology and the ability to bind β-galactosides. Human galectin-1 (Gal-1) and galectin-3 (Gal-3) are involved in tumor progression. Elevated Gal-1 levels are reported for many tumor tissues and Gal-1 contributes to tumor progression including cell migration and tumor immune escape.\nGal-3 is characteristically overexpressed in many cancers and an elevated Gal-3 level is associated with increased invasiveness, metastatic spreading, immunosuppression and angiogenesis. Galectins are also implicated in progression of serious diseases other than cancer e.g., cardiovascular ones, diabetes mellitus, fibrosis, and others. These\nproperties make galectins promising therapeutic targets.\n Keywords: organometallic compounds; galectin inhibitors; glycomymetics Available in a digital repository NRGL

Soon after the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis in the Czech Republic and the first lockdown (2020), we enthusiastically decided to fight the coronavirus with scientific \nmeans. Originally materials engineers, we decided to develop an effective protective respiratory device, which was in short supply at the time. We soon found out, that every textile material (handkerchief 10%) has a certain ability to catch an aerosol particle carrying the corona virus, the slower the aerosol particle (d<300 nm) passes through the filter, the greater the chance it has of being caught, with the thickness of the filter, the amount of passed particles decreases exponentially and breathing resistance increases linearly. On this basis, we decided to experiment with a large-area filter placed on the user's back (it wouldn't fit anywhere else) and commercially available textile filter material. Keywords: COVID-19; filtration efficiency; regeneration Available in a digital repository NRGL
