Fungal Bioremediation of Creosote-contaminated Soil
BYSS, Marius
2008 - anglický
The influence of two ligninolytic fungi (Pleurotus ostreatus and Irpex lacteus) on bioremediation of creosote-contaminated soil was studied. The thesis describes the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentration decrease during the laboratory-scale experiments and reveals the changes in the present soil microbial community under the influence of either fungus. The thesis compares different impact on PAH concentrations and soil microbial community depending on the fungus applied.
The two forms of white rhinoceros; northern and southern, have had contrasting conservation histories. The Northern form, once fairly numerous is now critically endangered, while the southern form has recovered from a few individuals to a population of a few thousand. Since their last taxonomic assessment over three decades ago, new material and analytical techniques have become available, necessitating a review of available information and re-assessment of the taxonomy.Dental morphology and cranial anatomy clearly diagnosed the southern and northern forms. The differentia ion was well supported by dental metrics, cranial growth and craniometry, and corresponded with differences in post-cranial skeleton, external measurements and external features. No distinctive differences were found in the limited descriptions of their behavior and ecology. Fossil history indicated the antiquity of the genus, dating back at least to early Pliocene and evolution into a number of diagnosable forms. The fossil skulls examined fell outside the two extant forms in the craniometric analysis. Infectivity and pathogenicity of Cryptosporidium andersoni to a novel host, southern multimammate mouse (Mastomys coucha)
ONDRÁČKOVÁ, Zuzana
2009 - anglický
The infectivity and pathogenicity of Cryptosporidium andersoni (bovine isolate) for neonatal and adult southern multimammate mice (Mastomys coucha) was studied using transmission experiments. Mastomys coucha seems to be a useful laboratory model for study of C. andersoni infection. Effect of pH on the denitrifying enzyme activity in pasture soils in relation to the intrinsic differences in denitrifier communities
ČUHEL, Jiří
2011 - anglický
The effects of pH on denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) and on the ratio of the denitrification products, N2O and N2, were determined in three pasture soils differing in cattle impact. The linkage between intrinsic differences in the denitrifying communities and pH effects on relative N2O production was also assessed. The soils were therefore analyzed for DEA and N2O production over a range of pH values and for the kinetic constants of NO3- and N2O reductions. Diet composition of Common Kestrels Falco tinnunculus and Long-eared Owls Asio otus coexisting in an urban environment
LÖVY, Matěj
2011 - anglický
We studied dietary composition of urban populations of Common Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) under fluctuating vole abundance. We tested hypotheses that the proportion of alternative prey in the diet increase with decreasing vole abundance throughout the years and that alternative prey differ between raptors due to different daily activities and/or hunting techniques. Finally, we tested whether the proportion of voles in the diet is influenced by the nest position within the city. Klíčová slova: Common Kestrel; Long-eared Owl; diet composition; vole; urban population Plné texty jsou dostupné v digitálním repozitáři JČU.

Elevational gradients in phylogenetic structure of ant communities reveal the interplay of biotic and abiotic constraints on diversity
MACHÁČ, Antonín
2011 - anglický
Incorporating information on species? phylogeny into the framework of conventional community ecology, we illustrate that ant communities situated in lowlands are primarily structured by interspecific competition. In contrast, highland communities are formed by habitat filtering on phylogenetically conserved temperature tolerances. In sum, our study highlights the potential role of niche constraints, environmental temperature, and competition in shaping broad-scale diversity gradients. The effect of nutrient level on plant structure and production in a wet grassland: a field study
KÁPLOVÁ, Miroslava
2011 - anglický
Since the 1950s, agricultural intensification has affected the structure and functioning of ecological systems including wet grasslands. Our study site, a wet grassland near Třeboň, Czech Republic, was historically a sedge meadow, but increased nutrient additions, a long-lasting flood in 2002 and changed mowing patterns resulted in domination by Phalaris arundinacea. The aim of the study was to determine how different nutrient conditions may affect plant structure and production in a wet grassland used for hay production.
