Identification of Products of Tetrapyrrole Pathway
HÁJEK, Jan
2013 - anglický
Cultivation of a model cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 under low light conditions in the presence of glucose and TES buffer leads to a change of the medium color from colorless to yellow. The absorption spectrum of the excreted unknown compound indicated a possible relationship to plant chlorophyll degradation products. To confirm this speculation the compound was purified by a combination of solid phase extraction and HPLC. The mass and NMR characteristics excluded its close relationship to modified tetrapyrroles, nevertheless the precise structure could not be determined by these means due to a complicated nature of the compound and its high polarity.

Restoration of hay meadows on ex-arable land: commercial seed mixtures vs. spontaneous succession.
VÍTOVCOVÁ, Kamila
2012 - anglický
The subject of this study were to compare two methods of grassland restoration - regrassing and spontaneous revegetating of abandoned fields in the Bohemian Forest foothills. The main aims of this study were to assess the phytocoenose differences between the re-grassed and spontaneously revegetated fields and effect of surrounding to abandoned field. The data were collected during the season 2008 and were analyzed by ordination methods (DCA, CCA) and by the ANCOVA. The significant difference between regrassed and naturally revegetated fields was not found. The effect of surrounding was important, most meadow species (92% in average)that were found in the field occurring in the surroundings too.

How the Red-backed Shrike (\kur{Lanius collurio}) solves the multiple predator conflict?
SYROVÁ, Michaela
2012 - anglický
I tested the ability of the Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) to solve multiple predator conflict. Nesting shrikes were exposed to two predators presented simultaneously. The Red-backed Shrike is able to solve this conflict by deciding which of the presented predators is the more dangerous and opting for the appropriate defence of its nest.

Interplay of succession and seasonality reflects resource utilization in an ephemeral habitat
SLÁDEČEK, František
2012 - anglický
The temporal aspects, succession, seasonality, of coprophilous beetles? assemblage were studied for the first time in Central Europe. Specifically all beetles? families were targeted including both the coprophagous and predatory species. In general, the pattern of species successional turn-over resembles the patterns retrieved from Northern Europe, however with the late successional species optima shifted towards earlier days of succession. The successional position of coprophages species reflets their oviposion strategy, while the predatory species are separated according to their size. The seasonal displacement applies predominantly to the species presented in the later part of succession.

Phylogeny of Grey-bellied Pygmy Mouse (\kur{Mus triton}) complex
KRÁSOVÁ, Jarmila
2014 - anglický
The Grey-bellied Pygmy Mouse (Mus triton) has been for a long time considered as a single species, although validity of the single species status was questioned. In order to revise current taxonomy of M. triton, I analyzed sequences of one mitochondrial (cytochrome b) and two nuclear genes (IRBP and Intron 7 of the fibrinogen) from specimens collected across the most of its known distributional range. Four well-supported phylogroups at species level, differentiated during the Plio-Pleistocene, were evidenced. Divergence dating suggests that the diversification of "triton" species complex was likely caused by Plio-Pleistocene climatic oscillations together with highly diverse topography of Eastern Africa

Different effects of planktonic invertebrate predators and fish on the plankton community in experimental mesocosms
ŠORF, Michal
2014 - anglický
The impact of fish and cyclopoid copepod predation on zooplankton communities was evaluated using large-volume mesocosms (depth 9.5 m; volume 13 m3) in the Římov reservoir (Czech Republic). Two yearling roach and perch individuals introduced into mesocosms represented the fish treatment, which was compared to cyclopoid copepods (initial abundance of 2 ind.L-1) and a control with no initial addition of predators. Our results clearly support the hypothesis that planktivorous fish feeding leads to the suppression of large-bodied cladocerans. In the presence of fish, the cladoceran community changed from a dominance of large-bodied Daphnia spp. at the beginning to dominance by the smaller Bosmina longirostris at the end of the experiment. The overall strong effect of fish over cyclopoid predation suggests the main role of fish predation in the forming of zooplankton communities and in turn impacting phytoplankton biomass in mesocosms.
