This bachelor thesis deals with Turkish-Greek relations portrayed in the novel "Birds without Wings" by Louis de Berniéres. It focuses not only on the events of the 20th century in the area of modern day Turkey, where Greeks and Turks used to live in harmony together, but also on the story of the individual inhabitants. These two parallel threads are associated with the universal topics such as war, nationalism, religion and multiculturalism. 2013 - English
The bachelor thesis Sherlock Holmes: From literary character to pop culture symbol deals with the collection of sixty detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, the canon. The aim of the thesis is to highlight the aspects that contributed to the popularity of Sherlock Holmes and the series as such. The character of Sherlock Holmes became one of the most adapted literary characters, which is reflected in many areas of popular culture. Keywords: Sherlock Holmes; kánon; popularita; adaptace Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Migrations of historical populations. Isotopic signatures in human bones and their applikation in archaeological interpretations
POŘÁDKOVÁ, Kateřina
2014 - English
In the Bachelor thesis called "Migration of historical populations. Isotopic signatures in human bones and their application in archaeological interpretations.", one of the most used research method stable isotope analysis, especially strontium isotope signature from human bones and teeth, is summarized on the basis of a literature review. Isotope analysis allows archaeologists and anthropologists to investigate human migration and the geographical origin of human populations based on the biochemistry of human skeletal remains. Isotopic research cooperates with other disciplines, because favorable conclusions could not be made without their use. The Bachelor thesis deals mainly with the strontium isotope signature recorded in human bones which is from my point of view, a strong tool for understanding the human prehistoric and historical migrations. Keywords: Migrace; historické populace; stabilní izotopy; stroncium; analýza izotopů stroncia. Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Application of Data Engineering Technologies in Bioinformatics
SAIBOLD, Anna
2018 - English
Due to the huge amount of biological data, the various available data sources, and the diversity of their structure as well as content, data engineering technologies are required. They provide an important opportunity to support their exploitation. This thesis aims at applying several data engineering steps to a particular real-world data source to demonstrate the additional benefit with respect to utilization of the data by means of connecting to other data sources as well as querying and analyzing the data. Therefore, in the practical part of this thesis a continuous example showing several engineering steps is constructed, comprising the development of different schemata, the creation of a database as well as the mapping and integration of future heterogeneous data. Finally, processing queries against the engineered data source is compared to an online database search regarding different aspects like time, effort, and usability. As the example shows, an engineered database can have huge benefits over online search, especially for complex queries, processing data from several sources. Keywords: Dataengineering; Bioinformatics; XML; Integration; Ontology; Mapping; Informationsystems; Cancer; Gene; Disease; Database; Query; Schema Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.
