LANGUAGE CHANGE IN TERMS OF GENDER IN THE ERA OF EARLY MODERN ENGLISH

2019 - English Language and gender has always been a major subject for sociolinguistic discussion. Moreover, the same applies to language change, which is still by some considered to be rather a decay in language than its progress. This thesis aims to investigate the relation between these two areas. Furthermore, it tries to establish the leaders of language changes with regard to gender. Based on the analysis of many sociolinguistic studies, this paper comes up with the hypothesis that women are the leaders of language changes. The process of verifying the hypothesis comprises few selected examples of language changes in the period of Early Modern English, on which is analysed their spread and their initiators. The background for this thesis are the personal letters from the period of Early Modern English. Gender v jazyce je jedno z velmi diskutovaných témat sociolingvistických studií. Podobně kontroverzní je i téma jazykové změny, která stále bývá považována za úpadek jazyka namísto jeho vývoje. Tato bakalářská práce se bude zabývat vztahem mezi těmito okruhy. Zároveň se bude zaměřovat i na vůdce jazykových změn. Na základě důkladného prostudování mnoha sociolingvistických studií byla stanovena hypotéza, která ukazuje na ženy, jakožto vůdce jazykových změn. Verifikace hypotézy zahrnuje vybrané jazykové změny z období rané moderní angličtiny, na kterých bude analyzováno jejich rozšíření s ohledem na iniciátory těchto změn. Výzkum bude prováděn na základě osobní korespondence z období rané moderní angličtiny. 2019 - English The goal of the bachelor thesis: "Lexical stress variability in English" is to describe basic principles of stress assignment in English with a focus on lexical units that have more realisations of stress placement without changing the meaning of the word. The practical part concentrates on collecting lexical items with variable stress. There is going to be an alphabetical list of stress-divergent words along with phonetic transcription of stress variations at the end of the work. Cílem bakalářské práce: "Variabilita anglického slovního přízvuku" je popsat základní problematiku spojenou s umístěním přízvuku v angličtině se zaměřením na lexikální jednotky, které mají více možností umístění přízvuku, aniž by se měnil jejich význam. Praktická část práce se pak zabývá sběrem lexikálních jednotek s variabilním přízvukem, na jejímž konci bude uveden abecední seznam variujících slov spolu s transkripčním přepisem jednotlivých přízvukových variant. Auto-Encoding Amino Acid Sequences with LSTM

2022 - English In this thesis a sequence to sequence autoencoder for amino acid sequences is constructed. The latent representation of the autoencoder is then used to classify the amino acid sequences according to their animal kingdom. The data consists of sequences from three different kingdoms, mammals, fish and birds. The thesis includes the preprocessing necessary for the data, the construction of the sequence to sequence autoencoder and the process of classification in the latent space. 2020 - English The thesis aims to uncover a relationship between less-known books from Norman Mailer and Hunter S. Thompson, who belonged to a group of New Journalism, with the American history of the 1960s and 1970s. In first part of the thesis, both writers are introduced and the historical background is clarified. The second part illustrates the atmosphere of the 1972 presidential election in the USA and the personality of Richard M. Nixon which is based on the perception of Mailer and Thompson and supplemented with the information from books about American history. In the end, the student compares what the chosen works have in common and what differs. The concluding part summarizes how the books reflect the historical events and why it is still worthwhile reading them. Anotace Tato práce si klade za cíl ukázat souvislost mezi nepříliš známými knihami Normana Mailera a Huntera S. Thompsona, kteří oba patřili ke hnutí "the New Journalism", a historickými událostmi z šedesátých a sedmdesátých let 20. století. V první polovině student představí oba spisovatele a objasní historické souvislosti. Druhá část nastiňuje atmosféru prezidentských voleb v USA z roku 1972 a osobnost Richarda M. Nixona, což je založeno na postřezích Mailera a Thompsona, a doplněno o informace z vědeckých historických pojednání. Na konec student srovná, v čem se vybrané knihy shodují, a v čem se liší. Comparing Canada and the United States with a Particular Reference to their Health Care Systems

2018 - English The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compare the Canadian and American health care systems against the background of the two countries' cultures, starting with the description of their common and divergent histories. I would like to define the term culture in all its different forms and meanings, and then concentrate on health care developments and authentic case studies. The main topics I deal with in my thesis are "free" and paid healthcare systems, the issue of waiting times in Canada, the issue of maternity leave in the United States and I am also focusing on health care expenditures in both countries. This bachelor thesis also contains qualitative research regarding to the experience and opinions of Americans and Canadians followed by an analysis. Cílem této bakalářské práce je porovnat kanadské a americké systémy zdravotní péče s ohledem na kulturu obou zemí, počínaje popisem jejich společných a odlišných dějin. Chtěla bych definovat pojem kultura ve všech jeho různých formách a významech a poté se soustředit na vývoj zdravotní péče a autentické případové studie. Hlavními tématy, jimiž se zabývám, jsou "bezplatné" a placené systémy zdravotní péče, čekací doby v Kanadě, problematika mateřské dovolené ve Spojených státech a také se zaměřuji na výdaje na zdravotní péči v obou zemích. Tato bakalářská práce také obsahuje kvalitativní výzkum týkající se zkušeností a názorů Američanů a Kanaďanů, následovaný analýzou hlavních témat výzkumu. 2018 - English This work aims to give insight into the evolution of the mitochondria by investigating novel properties of the evolutionary conserved mitochondrial contact site and cristae organization system complex within the Excavata clade using Trypanosoma brucei as our model. This study shows that this complex indeed contains diverse properties that are not present in the typically studied Opisthokonta clade: e.g. mammalian and yeast organisms. Užívání pasiva v ekonomických textech

2009 - English The topic of this thesis was the use of the passive voice in texts on economics. English articles from the magazines Czech Business Weekly were chosen and compared with their Czech translations. The texts were analyzed, the rationale for the use of the passive voice described and possible ways to translate the passive voice into Czech discussed. The thesis was divided into two parts, theory and practice. In the theoretical part the passive voice was described from the linguistic point of view, especially its possible forms and constraints which occur in Czech and English. Additional theoretical topics included ways of expressing an agent, the functions of the passive voice, how to translate the passive and the frequency of passives within economics writings. The practical part analyzed the articles in terms of frequency of the passive voice, its most commonly used forms and how the agent was expressed or not expressed. Theoretical reasons why translators used the passive or active voice were discussed. Tématem této bakalářské práce je užívání pasiva v ekonomických textech. Na vybraném odborném textu z oblasti ekonomie provádím vlastní analýzu, ve které se zaměřuji na důvody užití trpného rodu a možnosti jeho překladu do češtiny. Jako text ekonomický jsem vybrala anglické články z magazínu Czech Business Weekly, které porovnávám s jejich českým překladem. Práce je rozdělena na dvě základní části {--} teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části popisuji trpný rod jako jazykový jev, jeho možné formy, omezení, která platí v češtině a angličtině, dále se zabývám možnostmi vyjádření konatele, funkcí pasiva, jeho způsoby překladu a frekvencí s ohledem na odborné texty. V praktické části provádím samotnou analýzu textů a jejich překladů z hlediska frekvence výskytu trpného rodu, nejčastěji používaných forem a vyjádření konatele. Na základě teoretických poznatků uvádím důvody, které vedly překladatele k použití trpného či činného rodu.
