Human health risks of cyanobacterial toxins /Microcystins/ in Brno Reservoir
Maršálek, Blahoslav; Babica, P.; Bláha, Luděk
2002 - English
Monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms showed, that significant health risks of both direct dermal contact as well as exposure to microcystins exist in recreation in Brno. During the summer season 2001, safety limits for dermal contact were exceeded at 93% of analysed localities. Our results iniciate that both monitoring and regelatory actions ase necessary. Keywords: cyanobacteria; Brno Reservoir; health Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Screening of the health risks of biofilms using a battery of in vitro toxicity assays
Bláha, Luděk; Babica, P.; Sabatier, S.; Admiraal, W.; Maršálek, Blahoslav
2002 - English
Traces of microcystin-lika compounds were detected by HPCL in biofilm samples from Netherlands. Half of the tested samples had no significant effect in any of the in vitro assays, other biofilms elicicted weak inhibitory/toxic effects mostly in high concentrations, which are not environmentally relevant. Most of observed weak effect seem to be associated with oxidative stress, an important toxicologicalĺmechanisms, as detected by depletion of intracellular antioxidantĺGHS by several biofilm samples. Potential adverse effects ofĺexterne polutants, which are known to accumulate in theĺperyphyton biomass should not underestimated. Mutagenicity andĺneurotoxicity of biofilm metabolits seems to be negligible. Weekĺadverse effects of biofilm extracts detected in a batery of inĺvitro assays indicate relatively low human health risksĺassociated with biofilm toxicity. Keywords: HCPL; microcystin Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Algae and extreme environments - ecology and physiology
Elster, Josef
2002 - English
All photoautotrophic prokaryotes have evolved from the group Eubacteria. From fossil remains in the form of stromatolites, it has been possible to date the first prokaryotic oxyphototrophic algae (Cyanobacteria) back to almost 3,450 million years. Evolution of Eukaryotic Algae did not occur until about 700-800 million years ago. The endosymbiotic hypothesis is the most accepted theory for the origin of eukaryotic organells. Oxyphototrophic microorganisms (cyanobacteria and algae) are ubiquitous and, because of their evolutionary antiquity, are widely adapted to all the extremes related with the many changes in geological time. During the last ten years special attention has been given to study of cyanobacteria and algae in environment with extreme environment. The methodology has been steadily developing for biological-taxonomical and ecological-physiological studies. Keywords: algae, cyanobacteria, extreme environment Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Stabilization of the natural landscape in Bohemian Forest frontier area (Czech Republic/Germany) abandoned for 40 years
Kučera, Tomáš; Guth, J.
1999 - English
Land cover and its development is an object of study in applied landscape ecology and landscape conservation. Historical aerial photos are the basic data source for studies of long-term landscape development. All of the data can be analysed by the use of geographical information systems, GIS. GIS IDRISI is recommended for academic and nature conservation purposes, because of its powerful tools for spatial pattern (landscape structure) evaluation, user-friendliness and low price.Own case study is located in the borderland along the former "Iron Curtain". After the landscape was abandoned, the processes of "desynanthropisation" started. In the Bohemian Forest Mts. in SW Bohemia, (i) patch size and shape were evaluated and (ii) spatial pattern was characterised by various indices: diversity, fragmentation, contagion, etc. Land cover development is presented in a special triangular "landcovergram". The changes of indices are closely, but not simply, related to the intensity of human influence (management). Two types of local differences are important: the original situation ("the starting point") and both the quality and quantity of postsynanthropic management. Two main developments of landscape structure have occured in the upper floodplains near the Bohemian/Bavarian borderline: (i) the managed parcels were homogenised, and at the same time, (ii) wetlands were abondoned within their natural borders.
