Do traditional Dialects still exist Today?

The main goal of the lecture is to ansver the guestion as to whether or not traditional dialects still exist in contemporary Czech. When we look at the situation of modern languages we can see the global tendency of slowly fading of dialects.\nThe lecturer will present maps taken from Czech Language Atlas. Attention will be focused on the striking differences in the perspective of Czech and Moravian speech. There are several types of differences, for example in vocabulary (překážet x zavazet) in word formation (slánka x solnička, líný x lenošný), in morphology (sršeň f. x sršeň m., kobliha f. x koblih m.) or in phonetics (mák x mak, lhát x lhat, moucha x mucha). Příspěvek popisuje stav tradičních teritoriálních dialektů na území českého národního jazyka na přelomu 20. a 21. století. Zabývá se okolnostmi, které se na vývoji dialektů podílely a podílejí. Důležitý je zde zejména faktor sociální prestiže dialektu. Rozdílně se projevuje v Čechách (sociální bezpříznakovost) a na Moravě se Slezskem (sociální příznakovost).

On the Questions of the (un)literary Czech Language in from the 16th -18th Centuries (with special Emphasis on selected phonetic-orthogrphic Phenomena)

Nowadays the Czech literary (formal) language system in understood as a system of language resources used nationally in official speechas, written and spoken, which is set in the relevant codification manuals. The lecturer will analyze the question of formal (cultural) Czech language in the period from the 16th to the 18th centuries. She will present several examples from literature along with accompanying analysis. She will offer the typology of humanistic Czech language und baroque Czech language and its most important features, focusing especially on spelling and orthography. This lecture is strongly recommended to all students interested in the historical grammar of Czech language. Příspěvek se zabývá otázkou spisovnosti a nespisovnosti češtiny 16. až 18. století. Je poukázáno na rozdílné chápání termínu spisovná čeština v dnešním slova smyslu a ve starších vývojových obdobích češtiny, pro něž je navrženo užívat, v návaznosti na O. Koupila aj. bohemistů, spojení kulturní čeština. Na čtyřech konkrétních jazykových jevech, totiž na protetickém v-, úžení é > í, náslovném ou- a diftongizaci ý > ej je sledována postupná unifikace jazyka dobových tisků, jež později vedla k vytvoření dnešní spisovné češtiny. Článek mj. vyvrací starší názory o jazykovém rozkladu pobělohorského období, naopak upozorňuje na linearitu mezi jazykem humanistickým, barokním a raně obrozeneckým.

The paper deals with nouns derivated with suffixes -stvo and -stvie and is focused on their relationship and frequency in Old Czech especially. The aim of the research is to map the roots of semantic differentiation of these originally semantically and functionally synonymous suffixes, based on the genre different text material of the 14th and 15th centuries. Příspěvek se zabývá substantivy tvořenými příponami -stvo a -stvie a jejich četností a vztahem zejména ve staré češtině. Jeho cílem je na základě bohatě žánrově rozrůzněného textového materiálu 14. a 15. století vysledovat počátky významové diferenciace těchto původně významově i funkčně synonymních sufixů.

On the style of the Old Czech translation of Interpretationes hebraicorum nominum

This article deals with the Old Czech translation of Interpretationes Hebraicorum nominum, focusing on the style of its anonymous translator. The translator’s approach has been surveyed within a sample of 89 hapax legomen, the survey showed that the translator aimed to use the equivalents which were or could be an integral part of the contemporary Old Czech lexicon and that he made efforts to translate concordantly, even in the context of the whole word families. Tento článek se zabývá staročeskou literární památkou Výklady hebrejských jmen z hlediska překladatelského stylu. Přístup staročeského anonymního překladatele byl zkoumán na vzorku 89 hapax legomen, z průzkumu vyplynulo, že překladatel se snažil užívat ekvivalenty ústrojně zapadající do soudobého lexika a že usiloval o překlad konkordantní, a to i v rámci celých slovních čeledí.

The Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech has been prepared at the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v. v. i., since 2012. The conceptual principles govern general rules for creating the dictionary exemplification. This article deals with selected exemplification aspects, as the adequate length of the exemplification as a whole and the length of individual examples, typicality, example clarity and other content aspect. Special attention is paid to stereotypes concerning gender, age, ethnicity, nationality and religion. Akademický slovník současné češtiny se v Ústavu pro jazyk český AV ČR, v. v. i., připravuje od roku 2012. Obecná pravidla pro tvorbu exemplifikace upravují koncepční zásady. Článek pojednává o vybraných aspektech exemplifikace, jako je přiměřená délka exemplifikace jako celku i délka jednotlivých příkladů, typičnost, srozumitelnost příkladů a další obashové aspekty. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována stereotypům týkajícím se pohlaví, věku, etnicity, národnosti a náboženství.

The article focuses on the description of newly developed framework consisting of components which constitute the structure of semes of the Old Czech adverb/conjunction kde. The framework was employed in the description of the semantic and grammatical development of the complex lexical unit in a diachronic dictionary. The particular meanings of kde are summarized and attested by quotations from mediaeval texts. Studie nejprve podává stručný popis kategorií, které tvoří rámec odhalující sémickou strukturu lexikální jednotky, na jehož základě byl analyzován vývoj stč. kde za účelem jeho co nejobjektivnějšího lexikografického popisu v diachronním slovníku. Následně představuje nástin tohoto zpracování, dokládaný citacemi z dobových textů.

The Dictionary Treatment of Verbs of Motion and Verbs of Transport

This paper deals with an analysis of dictionary treatment of verbs of motion and verbs of transport in contemporary western Slavic dictionaries and forthcoming Akademický slovník současné češtiny (Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech). Lexicographical processing of given verbs raises several issues; the paper focuses on the delimitation and description of semantic features of determinate and indeterminate verbs, and distinctive semantic features of the verbs and their relevance in the lexicographical description of meaning. Příspěvek je věnovaný analýze lexikografického zpracování sloves pohybu a manipulace v současných výkladových slovnících vybraných slovanských jazyků a připravovaném Akademickém slovníku současné češtiny. Jejich lexikografické zpracování přináší několik zásadních otázek; příspěvek je zaměřený zejména na vymezení a zachycení sémantických rysů determinovanost a indeterminovanost a na popis distinktivních rysů jednotlivých sloves a jejich relevance v lexikografickém popisu významu.

Non-Actuality of the Verbal Action in the Latin–Czech Dictionaries from the 15th Century

The article focuses on the Latin–Czech dictionaries from the 15th century that list verbs in the 1 st person singular of present indicative. These dictionaries reflect the development of the vebal aspect in the Czech language. The verbs are characterized by an extensive aspectual homonymy and a gradual emergence of secondary ā-stem imperfective verbs. Článek se zaměřuje na latinsko-české slovníky z 15. století, které obsahují slovesa v 1. os. sg. ind. préz. Tyto slovníky odrážejí vývoj vidového systému českého slovesa. Pro staročeské slove so je charakteristická rozsáhlá vidová homonymie a postupné pronikání sekundárních ā-kmenových imperfektiv.

Processing dialect vocabulary in national dictionary

The Dictionary of Czech Dialects has been processed in the Department of Dialectology of the Czech Language Institute of the CAS since 2011. As the first work of its kind in the Czech area, this dictionary deals with the vocabulary of all dialects of the Czech national language. The dictionary entries (beginning with A–Č) are accessible on the webpage https://sncj.ujc.cas.cz/. The material basis is formed by the Archive of Folk Speech, established in 1952, which contains a rich dialect material. By means of references, the dictionary is interconnected with monolingual dictionaries of Standard Czech, with the Czech Linguistic Atlas, the Dictionary of Moravian and Silesian Anoikonyms, and the Dictionary of Bohemian Anoikonyms. Slovník nářečí českého jazyka vznikající od roku 2011 v dialektologickém oddělení ÚJČ AV ČR. Tento slovník jako první v českém prostředí zpracovává lexikální zásobu všech dialektů českého národního jazyka. Slovníková hesla (s náslovím A–Č) jsou dostupná na internetových stránkách (https://sncj.ujc.cas.cz/). Materiálovou základnou je Archiv lidového jazyka, založený v roce 1952, v němž je uložen bohatý nářeční materiál. Nářeční slovník je propojen pomocí odkazů s výkladovými slovníky spisovné češtiny, s Českým jazykovým atlasem, se Slovníkem pomístních jmen na Moravě a ve Slezsku a se Slovníkem pomístních jmen v Čechách.

Slang is entertaining – and is becoming an effective means of advertising

This paper demonstrates the current permeation of entertainment and the entertainment function into nearly all communicative spheres (cf. infotainment, politainment, edutainment and others) and its role in the intensive mixing of styles. It documents this primarily through specialized slang, which is becoming an attractive means for institutions to advertise to the broader public and is a combination of the entertainment function and the persuasive one. The examples are selected mainly from the publication Slang pražských dopraváků (The Slang of Prague Transport Employees), which serves to promote the city public transportation, and from the Česko-filharmonický a filharmonicko-český slovník (Czech-Philharmonic and Philharmonic-Czech Dictionary), the purpose of which is to promote classical music concerts. The conclusion then contains a brief consideration of how, in recent years, visualization and multimodality (e.g. interesting artistic collages), along with wordplay and language humor, are utilized in the promotion of concerts (the Prague Spring music festival). Příspěvek ukazuje současné pronikání zábavnosti, zábavní funkce téměř do všech komunikačních sfér (srov. infotainment, politainment, edutainment atd.) a její podíl na intenzivním míšení stylů. Dokumentuje to především prostřednictvím speciálních slangů, které se stávají atraktivním prostředkem reklamního působení institucí na širokou veřejnost a spojení zábavní funkce s funkcí persvazivní. Příklady jsou vybrány hlavně z publikace Slang pražských dopraváků (kde slouží k propagaci městské hromadné dopravy) a z Česko-filharmonického a filharmonicko-českého slovníku (kde slouží k propagaci koncertů vážné hudby). V závěru příspěvku je pak aspoň naznačeno, jak se v posledních letech při propagaci koncertů (hudebního festivalu Pražské jaro) uplatňuje – spolu s prostředky slovního humoru a jazykové komiky – vizualizace a multimodalita (např. zajímavé výtvarné koláže).
