This thesis investigates the systematics and biology of Neotropical Cassidinae and summarizes available knowledge of all tribes occurring in the Neotropics. This study uses a multidisciplinary framework to evaluate various issues in the taxonomy of this diverse group of beetles as a result of extensive field research. Infant handling in male Barbary macaques

Nemateřská manipulace s mláďaty u samců makaka magota přitahuje vědeckou pozornosti svou intenzitou v kombinaci s promiskuitou druhu, která by měla působit proti otcovské péči. Tato disertační práce se skládá ze čtyř studií, které zkoumají samčí manipulaci s mláďaty v skupině divoce žijících makaků v Maroku. Tyto studie jsou založeny na původních datech a výsledky poskytují nové informace o chování, a tím významně přispívají k jeho vysvětlení. Zaprvé nabízíme nový pohled na vztah mezi distribucí páření a manipulací, a ptáme se, zda jej lze vysvětlit jako otcovskou investici nebo snahou samců zvýšit šance na budoucí páření s matkami mláďat. Zadruhé poskytujeme nové detaily k vysvětlení triadických interakcí, při nichž dva samci společně manipulují s jedním mládětem. Zatřetí řešíme otázku, zda samci využívají znalosti o vztahu třetí strany při výběru partnerů pro triadické interakce. Začtvrté, práce ukazuje, že zájem samců manipulovat dokonce i s mláďaty pocházejícími z jiné skupiny může přispět k re-introdukci mláďat konfiskovaných z nelegálního obchodu. Non-maternal manipulation of infants also called infant handling in male Barbary macaques attracts scientific attention due to its intensity in combination with promiscuity of the species that should select against paternal care. This PhD thesis consists of four studies that investigate male infant handling in wild group of Barbary macaques in Morocco. The studies are based on original data and the results provide new information about the behaviour and thus significantly contribute to its explanation. First, we offer new insights into the relationship between distribution of mating and infant handling, and ask whether it can be better explained by paternal effort or future mating success with infants' mothers. Second, we broaden the range of explanations beyond the original hypothesis of relationship management for male-infant-male interactions. Third, we focus on the question whether males use knowledge of third party relationship when distributing infant handling interactions. Fourth, we demonstrate how care of infants can surprisingly contribute to the reintroduction of an infant who is not native in its group. Circadian clock genes in insects

This thesis focuses on molecular characterization of circadian clock genes in insects. It explores genetic diversity of circadian clock genes by molecular characterization of several insect species including two dipteran flies (Musca domestica and Drosophila melanogaster), two cockroach species representing ancestral insects, and the linden bug, Pyrrhocoris apterus. Furthermore it considers various roles of circadian clock genes in insect physiology. Application of molecular-biology methods in Pyrrhocoris apterus, non-model insect species, enable us to investigate involvement of circadian clock genes in photoperiod induced physiological responses. Application of molecular-biology methods in Periplaneta americana and Blattella germanica was used to explore involvement of circadian clock genes in magnetoreception. Nutritional requirements of ticks.

Ticks acquire nutrients only by a parasitic nature of feeding on animals, including humans. During this process, a wide array of pathogens is transmitted. Ticks of the Ixodidae family receive exactly one blood meal in each active developmental. Knowing the trophic dependence of tick metabolism on the host blood meal components may enable discovering processes essential for the tick physiology and development. Exploiting a membrane system of tick feeding and whole blood fractionation, we have revealed that adult ticks need to acquire host haemoglobin-derived haem so that they can produce viable larvae, and reproduce. Haem is not further catabolised in ticks, and iron is thus acquired via independent route with the host serum transferrin as a source molecule. Using RNA-seq, we compared transcriptome compositions between guts of blood- and serum-fed ticks. We identified fifteen gut transcripts that change their levels with respect to the presence/absence of dietary red blood cells. Glutathione S-transferase, one of the identified encoded molecules, shows a clear haeminresponsive expression at both transcript and protein levels. Its apparent haem-binding properties suggest that this protein is directly involved in haem homeostasis maintenance within the tick gut. The ultimate goal of such research is to identify and verify targets that, when blocked, would render the acquisition and/or distribution system of haem in ticks nonfunctional. Genomic and Cellular Integration in the Tripartite Nested Mealybug Symbiosis

The PhD thesis is composed of three publications on genomic, metabolic, and cellular integration between the host and its symbionts in the tripartite nested mealybug system. The articles revealed a path to an intimate endosymbiosis that can be compared to what we think happened before (and to some extent after) bacterial ancestors of key eukaryotic organelles, mitochondria and plastids, became highly integrated into their host cells. I argue that these much younger symbioses may tell us something about how the mitochondria and plastids came to be, at the very least by revealing what types of evolutionary events are possible as stable intracellular relationships proceed along the path of integration. Tématem bakalářské práce je Kriminalita a delikvence žáků na středních školách a jejich prevence. Bakalářská práce se dělí na část teoretickou a část praktickou. V teoretické části jsou vymezeny a popsány základní pojmy týkající se problematiky kriminality a delikvence. Dále se tato práce zabývá prevencí patologického chování studentů na středních školách. V praktické části je pomocí dotazníkového šetření zjišťován pohled dotazovaných respondentů na otázky týkající se oblasti kriminality a delikvence studentů středních škol, dále zjištění, zda má dlouhodobá a soustavná prevence vliv na vývoj mládeže v oblasti znalostí a návyků při dodržování a respektování zásad bezpečného chování. The theme of the bachelor´s thesis is the Crime and Delinquency of secondary school pupils and their prevention. The bachelor thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part defines and describes the basic terms related to crime and delinquency. Furthermore, this work deals with the prevention of pathological behaviour of students in secondary schools. In the practical part is using a questionnaire survey of respondents view on issues related to the area of juvenile delinquency and high school students, as well as determining whether the long-term and systematic prevention has an effect on the development of youth in knowledge and habits for the observance and respect of the principles of safe behaviour.
