Entrepreneurship in the information age: an empirical analysis of the European regions

2018 - English Decelerating productivity in recent years raised questions about technology diffusion in the economy. This study focuses on one particular diffusion channel, entrepreneurship, and inspects the mechanics through which it interacts with digitalization. The composite indicator of digitalization is split into separate components which enables analyzing digitalization’s interplay with entrepreneurship as a dynamic process. Based on the econometric analysis of Eurostat regional data covering the period 2008-2015, I find significant links between digitalization and entrepreneurship. Specifically, digitalization is associated with an increase in the rate at which firms are created and with a decrease in their survival rate after 3 years. The paper demonstrates that the interaction is dynamic in its nature as the effects of initial stages of digitalization reverse or vanish in its later phases. A sectoral analysis shows the persistence of the results across industries.\nMoreover, there is evidence that professional, scientific and technical activities are especially sensitive towards digitalization, experiencing strong, yet short-term shock in the firms’ birth, death, and survival rates. Accounting for geographic variation reveals heterogeneity between regions but not large enough to affect the overall results. 2016 - Czech Táto štúdia podrobne mapuje časopisecký publikačný výkon na Slovensku zachytený v databáze Web of Science (WoS) za roky 2010 – 2014 a porovnáva ho s priemerným publikačným výkonom 11 ďalších krajín. Porovnania sú vykonané na úzko definovaných vedných odboroch, do ktorých WoS kategorizuje časopisy evidované v databáze. Štúdia porovnáva nielen celkový publikačný výkon, ale tiež excelentný publikačný výkon, t. j. počet publikácií výhradne v špičkových časopisoch v danom odbore na základe ich ohlasu v akademickom svete. This study covers in detail the publication output in scientific journals in Slovakia, based on articles published in the years 2010 – 2014 and included in the Web of Science (WoS) database and compares it with the output of 11 different countries. For our comparison, we have used the narrowly defined scientific fields used by the WoS to categorize the journals included in the database. The study compares both total publication output and outstanding publication output, i.e. the number of articles published in top scientific journals in the given field, based on their reputation in the academia. 2016 - Czech Srovnáváme hodnoty široce používaného citačního indexu vědeckých časopisů tzv. Impact Factoru (IF) s méně známým, ale sofistikovanějším indexem Article Influence Score (AIS). Mezi relativními hodnotami IF a AIS v rámci oborů existuje pozitivní korelace, ale rozptyl je poměrně vysoký. Odlišnost hodnot IF a AIS způsobuje různá míra sebecitovanosti časopisů a rozdílný vědecký význam časopisů, ze kterých jsou články v časopisech citovány. Český publikační výkon ve významnějších časopisech má jistou tendenci se koncentrovat v časopisech s relativně nižším AIS než IF. Tyto články mají také tendenci se koncentrovat v menším počtu zahraničních časopisů. Český publikační výkon v řadě oborů se koncentruje v českých a slovenských časopisech, z nichž většina má relativně nízký jak AIS tak IF. IF a AIS několika českých časopisů se nachází zcela mimo ve světě přirozený rámec hodnot. We compare the scores in the widely used citation index of academic journals known as Impact Factor (IF) with the lesser known but more sophisticated index Article Influence Score (AIS). There is a positive correlation between the relative IF and AIS scores within fields, but the spread is quite high. The difference between the IF and AIS scores is caused by differences in the extent of journal self-citation and in the academic importance of the journals from which journal articles are cited. Czech publication output in relatively major journals tends to be concentrated in journals with a lower AIS than IF. These articles also tend to be concentrated in a rather small number of international journals. In many fields, Czech publication output is concentrated in Czech and Slovak journals, most of which have relatively low AIS and IF. The IF and AIS of some Czech journals are entirely outside the natural range of scores worldwide.
