This case study from National Library of Technology in Prague describes the use of customer relation management (CRM) software by the User Support Team in order to keep a record of provided academic support services provided and—most importantly—to ensure continuous improvement and appropriate analysis of these services. The CRM system helps to identify gaps in student support services, and inspires the development of new services. It is also used to enhance peer-to-peer personal knowledge exchange within the team. Last but not least, the essence and value of our support has been “materialized” in the form of the CRM system and can be easily communicated with our stakeholders.

Virtuální národní fonotéka - podpora spolupráce

Od loňského roku má Národní technická knihovna v Praze ve své správě unikátní databázi záznamů zvukových nosičů uložených v českých institucích - Virtuální národní fonotéku. Tato databáze a portál sdružuje na jednom místě záznamy z institucí různého typu - knihovny, komerční vydavatelství (nejvýznamnější je spolupráce s vydavatelstvím Supraphon), Český rozhlas, Česká televize i soukromí sběratelé. Uživatelé portálu mohou zjistit, která instituce vlastní požadovanou nahrávku, a následně stojí na křižovatce s několika směry: mohou do instituce zajít a nahrávku si poslechnout či půjčit, mohou si díky odkazu poslechnout ukázku nahrávky, mohou si nahrávku zakoupit na e-shopu vydavatele či si mohou zobrazit digitalizovanou verzi dané nahrávky. Portál v současnosti obsahuje asi 500 tis. metadatových záznamů od 24 dodavatelů. Díky navázané spolupráci můžeme realizovat také další návazné projekty. Ve spolupráci s vydavatelstvím Supraphon jsme připravili pro uživatele naší knihovny novou službu - mohou na přístupových bodech v budově NTK poslouchat nahrávky z produkce Supraphonu na svých mobilních zařízeních. Našimi cíli pro nejbližší 2 roky je zejména navázat spolupráci s dalšími dodavateli záznamů do VNF a připravit novou verzi portálu tak, aby splňoval kritéria moderní a bezpečné databáze. Vzhledem ke společné historii našich dvou zemí uvítáme také spolupráci od slovenských knihoven a dalších partnerů v oblasti zvukových dokumentů. Last year, the National Library of Technology of the Czech Republic became the new administrator of the Virtual National Phonoteque (VNP). This unique database is the aggregator of audio documents stored in Czech institutions. The portal collects metadata across different types of institutions: libraries, archives, museums, commercial publishers, Czech Radio, Czech Television and even private collectors, making them all accessible in one location. Visitors to the portal can use it to locate metadata records for the item of interest, thereafter finding themselves with several options: to visit the owner of the audio to listen to it there or borrow it, to buy it in the publisher’s e-shop, or to view and listen digitised version directly. The portal currently contains about one and a half million metadata records and pools data from 24 suppliers. Thanks to our established collaborations we are now undertaking more projects and working towards taking the next steps. In cooperation with Supraphon we have made a new service for NLT visitors, who have exclusive direct access to the Supraphon Digital Archive, allowing them to listen music via headphones and on mobile devices from within our library. Our immediate targets for next two years are to involve and cooperate with more suppliers to enrich the VNP´s content, and to develop a new version of the portal to meet all the criteria of a modern, secure database. Given our common history, we are open to collaboration with slovak libraries and other institutions, with regards to sound recordings.

HathiTrust started in 2008 as a partnership of academic and research institutions with an initial focus on preserving and providing access to digitized book and journal content from member library collections around the world. In the years since this remains a core tenant of what HathiTrust does. By focusing on numerous collaborative collection services, HathiTrust is able to contribute to the world’s research, scholarship, and the common good. This talk will include an overview of the history and mission of HathiTrust with a focus on how our collaborative collection services are key to achieving everything we do.

Project DEAL

DEAL is an initiative of the Alliance of Science Organizations in Germany with the goal to conclude nationwide licensing agreements for the entire portfolio of electronic journals from major academic publishers. The intention is to bring about significant change to the status quo in relation to negotiations, content and pricing in the process and to achieve wide-scale, lasting improvements in open access to scholarly literature. The first agreement with a major publisher was signed on January 15, 2019 – after a long series of negotiations. I am a member of the DEAL negotiation team and will report on the whole range of plans and challenges as well as my expectations for future development.

GreyGuide Repository and Portal: Advancements and Impact Assessment 5 Years on!

V roce 2013 společnost GreyNet International a Institut informační vědy a technologií Národní výzkumné rady v Itálii (ISTI-CNR) zahájily budování repozitáře GreyGuide, který slouží jako úložiště dokumentů o dobré praxi v oblasti šedé literatury. Díky společnému úsilí byl GreyGuide rozšířen a slouží i jako dokumentový portál GreyNetu. ISTI slouží jako poskytovatel služby technicky a GreyNet dodává obsahovou náplň. Příspěvek je věnován zhodnocení služby a její návratnosti po 5 letech provozu, závěr bude věnován dalším plánům. In 2013, GreyNet International and the Institute of Information Science and Technologies of the National Research Council of Italy began work on the construction of the GreyGuide repository, which would house works of good practice in the field of grey literature. This joint venture soon expanded and came to also serve as GreyNet’s Web Access Portal. Now five years on ISTI-CNR – the service provider and GreyNet International – a content provider openly discuss their return on investments in human and information resources. The presentation concludes with an impact assessment and further course of action.

Šedá literatura je obvykle označována jako nepublikované nerecenzované materiály, které jsou šířené mimo komerční kanály a obtížně dostupné. Zejména v oblasti digitalizačních projektů se tento termín používá také pro starší materiály a speciální sbírky. Cílem práce je analyzovat význam „šedého dědictví vědy a výzkumu“ a na základě empirických a koncepčních prvků přispět k lepšímu pochopení šedé literatury. Zvláštní pozornost bude věnována starším kvalifikačním pracím a disertacím (OTD) jako hlavní součásti vědeckého dědictví z prostředí univerzit. Grey literature is often described as unpublished material, disseminated outside of commercial channels, not peer-reviewed and with limited referencing of information. Especially in the field of digitization projects, the term is also applied for older material and special collections. The objective of the paper is to analyse the meaning of “grey scientific heritage” and, based on empirical and conceptual elements, to contribute to a better understanding of grey literature. Special attention will be paid on older theses and dissertations (OTDs), as a main part of scientific heritage from universities.

LOCKSS Distributed Digital Preservation Networks

Naším hlavním cílem stejně jako pro univerzitní knihovny je dlouhodobá ochrana digitálních dokumentů. V tomto příspěvku probereme zásadní požadavky na ideální řešení digitální ochrany založené na posouzení rizik. Dále ukážeme, jak může open source technologie LOCKSS pomoci knihovnám vybudovat robustní distribuovanou digitální síť pro dlouhodobou archivaci a trvalou dostupnost vědeckých výstupů. Nakonec představíme detailněji jednu ze stávajících sítí LOCKSS – síť SAFE – jako konkrétní případovou studii. As university libraries, preserving digital objects for future generations is our key mission. In this talk, we will discuss the crucial features required for an ideal digital preservation solution based on risk assessment. We will then show how the LOCKSS open source technology can help libraries build a robust distributed digital preservation network to ensure the very long term availability of their scientific heritage. Finally, as a concrete case study, we will have a deeper look at the SAFE network, one of a dozen existing LOCKSS networks.

Umělá inteligence se stala běžnou součástí našeho denního života, neboť ovlivňuje náš způsob práce, učení, komunikace i zábavy. Umělá inteligence ovlivňuje také oblast informačního managementu. Tento příspěvek zkoumá potenciální dopad na management šedé literatury a je založen na analýze aspektů šedé literatury, jako je objem, různorodost, rychlost a důvěryhodnost. Ukáže také příklady systémů umělé inteligence z této oblasti a nabídne praktické rady informačním profesionálům pracujícím s šedou literaturou ohledně přicházejících výzev. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of our daily lives as it impacts the way we work, learn, communicate and entertain ourselves. AI also impacts information management. This paper examines this potential impact on grey literature management and is based on analysis of GL facets such as volume, variety, velocity and veracity. Examples of AI systems already implemented in similar activities are offered. The paper offers advice to grey literature managers regarding coming challenges.
