Before and Beyond Embedding

Rewind the tape telling the story of reference services at the National Library of Technology (NTK) in Prague to 2009: a closed stacks specialized library with a long, complicated institutional history re-opens its arms to the public with a new “open stacks spirit” in an innovative building—an architectural jewel. Students (80% of all visitors) and the public embrace an inspiring space in the heart of a STEM campus and it rapidly fills with activities ranging from conferences to art exhibitions to concerts. But lost in this mélange are modern academic reference and information services. Despite being governed and financed directly by the Czech Ministry of Education, the narrative of value to academic stakeholders is shyly whispered. “We’re the flagship of Czech librarianship,” we gloat. Nothing, and almost no one, shouts: “We can help you succeed in your academic journey.” Fast-forward to 2017. In our paper, we will relate how we are weaving together the first fabrics of academic value narratives. Our story has not been linear; threads related to internal strategic planning, creation of intranets and reusable staff educational modules entwine with other threads (user-based online development, social media statements, “backward designed” instructional efforts) which we discuss using notable examples. Common to all narratives are themes of academic success, rigor, and individual engagement; internally in relation to ongoing staff development and externally, with intimate involvement (even bowling!) with colleagues and students. While our campus may not yet be fully ready for such approaches, we are now strongly declaring our value as essential players in the successful education of students. Keywords: embedované knihovnictví; design služeb; embedded librarianship; backward instructional design; services design; vyprávění; vývoj; historický vývoj; kulturní vývoj Available in the NTK library.

Letting Traditional Boundaries Blur
Krueger, Stephanie
2017 - English
This illustrative case study describes the evolution of a series of courses (2014-present) aimed at providing advanced students and early career researchers from a Czech science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)campus with the skills they need to adequately participate in global scientific endeavors. The involvement of library staff in the courses described here ranged far beyond embedding in the passive sense of the word, with all aspects of course design, implementation, and revision managed collaboratively and actively by an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional team championed by library personnel. Thus, this study raises the question of whether or not “embedding” is the appropriate term for describing active library leadership in such “catalytic” endeavors. Structurally, the case study will linearly relate how course modules were developed and how the team approached various organizational and structural hurdles which emerged over time. The study will also show how information literacy concepts were woven into the curriculum without being labeled as such - thus identifying a possible necessity for refining the discourse surrounding information literacy concepts so that students and researchers better understand why they are valuable. The study includes original data from course evaluations as well as descriptions of final syllabi (topics covered, readings assigned, types of homework assigned) for two courses, Scientific Writing in English, and Gaining Confidence in Presenting. Because all instruction and materials were delivered in English, the content described will be relevant to anyone working with advanced STEM students and early career researchers who publish in English. Finally, the study relates how such courses provide essential starting points for proactive engagement with patrons and includes examples of dialogues about writing, publishing, and related topics, introducing issues related to blur: the blurring of traditional boundaries between librarianship and scholarship. Keywords: mezinárodní konkurenceschopnost; STEM vzdělání; Česká republika; doctoral experience; international competitiveness; STEM education; Czech Republic; vzdělávací systémy; vzdělání; doktorandské vzdělání Available in the NTK library.

Co vlastně víme o potřebách a chování Ph.D. studentů ohledně výzkumných dat, zejména v oblasti společenských a humanitních věd? V průběhu workshopu budou popsány různé RDM projekty uskutečněné v kampusu sociálních a humanitních věd Univerzity v Lille, zejména v rámci doktorského vzdělávacího programu. Dále bude popsán rozvoj infrastruktury RDM pro uchovávání, ochranu a sdílení výzkumných dat spojených s dizertacemi. Velká část workshopu bude věnována diskusi o místních iniciativách, projektech a také otázkám účastníků. What do we know about data behaviours and needs of PhD students, especially in social sciences and humanities? How can academic libraries improve the research data management (RDM) of PhD students? How can they contribute to curation, preservation and sharing of research data related to electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs)? Which are realistic goals? The workshop will provide an introduction and overview of the field and help to better understand the challenge of RDM for academic libraries. It will describe the different RDM projects on the social sciences and humanities campus of the University of Lille, in particular the PhD training program and the development of a RDM infrastructure for the storage, preservation and sharing of research data related to ETDs. A large part of the workshop will be reserved for the discussion of the participants’ local initiatives, projects and questions. Keywords: výzkumná data; management výzkumných dat; research data; research data management; vědecká setkání; výzkum; disertace; doktorandské vzdělání Available in the NTK library.

Collecting Grey Literature – Institutional Repository versus National Aggregator
Černohlávková, Petra; Vyčítalová, Hana
2017 - English
The Czech National Library of Technology (NTK) provides two digital repositories – the National Repository of Grey Literature (NRGL) and the NTK Institutional Digital Repository (IDR). NRGL’s primary is providing access to grey literature as well as long-term archiving and preservation of grey literature from various institutions in the Czech Republic. The IDR was created for collecting and archiving of employee-generated content and other documents, including grey literature, connected with the library and its services. Our poster highlights the differences between collecting grey literature at the institutional level (through the institutional repository) and at the national level. What commonalities and differences do they have? What problems do they solve? Differences include not only overall conceptions and document types, but also methods for collecting, legal issues and standards as well as functionality and options. Thanks to our experiences in managing both types of repositories, we define general differences, obstacles, and development possibilities. Information presented here, including a mode for cooperating at the institutional or national level, is useful for all institutions planning to start collecting (not only) grey literature at the institutional or the national level even at cooperating institutional model/level Keywords: šedá literatura; digitální knihovny; autorské právo; vyhledávače; otevřený přístup Available in the NTK library.

A Lot of Music for a Mere Pittance
Horová, Iva; Šír, Filip
2016 - English
This paper focuses on an area of audio preservation at the national level that has until recently been completely neglected. Our biggest challenge lies in the fact that we still do not have a Czech National Sound Archive, primarily because we lack systematic preservation policies for audio at a national level. Over the last two years much has been accomplished, but the direction has not been firmly established, and it does not yet have strong institutional support. While our goals have recently been captured in the State Cultural Policy, 2015-2020, the question of funding has not been resolved. In this presentation, we will discuss some of our recent, important activities. Our platform, which aims to fill a gap in understanding the national sound cultural heritage, is called the Virtual National Phonotheque (www.narodnifonoteka.cz). It informs users about the existence, location and content of all audio documents published or housed in the Czech Republic. It is very important that we also cover the history of the Czech sound industry, record labels and publishing. In addition, we are moving forward in many other directions related to the preservation of audio recordings. We want to highlight the gains we have made in our work so far, all without big projects or money from the Czech Republic. Keywords: Virtuální národní fonotéka; zvukové dokumenty; záznam zvuku; kulturní dědictví; Česká republika; národní politika; Virtual National Phonoteque; audio documents; sound recording; cultural heritage; Czech Republic; national policy Available in the NTK library.

Data quality and consistency in Scopus and Web of Science in their indexing of Czech Journals
Mika, Pavel; Szarzec, Jakub; Sivertsen, Gunnar
2016 - English
This study addresses the discussion of “quality versus coverage” that often arises if a choice is needed between Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). We present a new methodology to detect problems in the quality of indexing procedures. Our preliminary findings indicate the same degree and types of errors in Scopus and WoS. The more serious errors seem to occur in the indexing of cited references, not in the recording of traditional metadata. Keywords: kvalita dat; citační index; Levenštejnova vzdálenost; Scopus; Web of Science; data quality; journal coverage; citation indexing; Levenshtein distance; teorie dat; lexikální sémantika; periodika Available in the NTK library.

Cooking Stone Soup: Porous Workforce Training at the Czech National Library of Technology as a Supplement to (Impermeable) University Education
Chodounská, Alena; Krueger, Stephanie
2016 - English
As in many other countries around the world, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) libraries in the Czech Republic are facing the difficult challenge of meeting the rapidly-evolving service needs of the communities they support in an environment in which the current university educational system does not provide graduates—neither those from STEM subjects nor those graduating from Czech library/information professional schools—with the appropriate set of skills needed for working in today’s specialized information provision settings. As a result, the Czech National Library of Technology (NTK) has been forced to provide on-the-job workforce training since early 2015 to its reference, instructional, and front-lines services staff simply in order to keep pace with STEM library developments outside the Czech Republic. This weekly workforce training effort, christened NTKu (short for NTKyouniversity), does not resemble traditional university education with its rigid structures and focus on the attainment of a degree. NTKu is, instead, porous: traditional “impermeable,” less flexible university curricula are supplemented with on-demand, ever-changing targeted instruction on specific issues, topics, and skills applied immediately to real-work settings. This manner of instruction, as the authors discuss in the paper, can yield highly effective results; however, unique challenges can emerge in an instructional environment lacking traditional measures of effectiveness (i.e., grades) and requiring voluntary participation by both learners and instructors. Such porous instructional efforts resemble those of open source software (OSS) communities, in which voluntary effort can produce results benefiting a particularly community—but only to the degree of investment provided by contributors. Such initiatives resemble cooking stone soup: the results can be tasty, but everyone involved needs to bring something to the table. Keywords: informační věda; andragogika; mimoškolní vzdělávání; vysokoškolské knihovny; vedení lidí Available in the NTK library.
