Meaning and Inference
Peregrin, Jaroslav
2003 - English
According to certain semantic theories, the meaning of an expression is, principally, its inferential role. In this paper we first propose an exact definition of the concept of inferential role, and then go on to examine the question whether subscribing to inferentialism necessitates throwing away existing theories of formal semantics, as we know them from logic, or whether these could be somehow accomodated within the inferentialist framework. The conclusion we reach is that it is possible to make an inferentialist sense of even those common semantic theories which are usually considered as incompatible with inferentialism, such as the standard semantics of second-order logic. Keywords: inferentialist semantics Available at various institutes of the ASCR

The Protagoras as Plato's Apology of Socrates
Hobza, Pavel
2003 - English
The Protagoras is staged as the confrontation of two kinds of wisdom that have different criteria: The criterion of Protagoras' wisdom resting on tekhne is human, whereas that of Socrates, who was designated by the Delphic oracle as the wisest of the Greeks, is divine. In confronting both kinds of wisdom the dialogue author wanted to justify Socrates before the Athenian public. Keywords: Socrates; Plato; orality Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Horwich's Conception of Meanings: How to Change his "Deflationary View" into a Non-Trivial Conception
Materna, Pavel
2002 - English
A critical comment to Horwich's deflationary theory of meaning: the deflationary view ignores the fact that the way the subexpressions of an expression are combined is language dependent unlike meaning, which is in a sense 'international'; the link between the grammatical structure and the respective construction (=the meaning from the viewpoint of transparent intensional logic) is not as direct and simple as it would follow from Horwich's conception. Keywords: philosophy Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Global Probability for Possible Worlds
Majer, Ondrej
2002 - English
In the majority of papers on probability in the framework of possible worlds the existence of a global probability distribution is taken for granted. The aim of the article is to discuss the epistemic aspect of this assumption in the connection to the status assigned to possible worlds. Two questions are discussed in particular: the justification of the global probability distribution and compatibility of the global probability assumption with the structure of the universe of the possible worlds. Keywords: philosophy Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Wyclif's Ecclesiology and Its Prague Context
Herold, Vilém
2002 - English
Wiclif's teaching on the church has - in the years preceding the Hussite revolution - undoubtedly inspired the Prague intellectual milieu of the Hus circle and even Hus himself. However, despite much of textual concord of both Wyclif's and Hus' like-titled treatise De ecclesia, it can be shown that Hus differs in some important points of this doctrine from Wyclif and that he advocates more moderate views.
