Decision-making in cross-border cooperation in times of the COVID-19 pandemic
SCHNEIDER, Bettina
2021 - English
COVID-19 has caused unprecedented challenges to the decision-making process of cross-border cooperations. In consequence many cross-border cooperations are not able to travel abroad, leading to a fundamental shift from on-site to virtual collaboration. Existing research literature about decision-making and media use does not provide a thorough ex-planation of how the decision-making process changed and how the media is used. This study explores the change that the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has presented and the technological means project managers use to implement their decisions. For this study, eight project managers were invited to participate in an expert interview and to talk about their experiences of making a decision while working from home. This thesis con-tributes to the Media Synchronicity Theory and Lunenburg's (2010) sequential model by providing an understanding of the procedure of the decision-making process and its media use during the COVID-19 pandemic. The change of the decision-making process resulted in more effort during the now more asynchronous preparation of this process. Moreover, it was found that more documents have been created to visually support this process at any step and the importance of the preparation team has increased. Finally, it was found that due to the change of situation, the decision-making has changed as well and more media is used to support the communication. However, concerning the decision-making itself, it could be observed that although there is a wide range of media to support the decision-making (e.g., voting tools, decision-making trees, decision matrix), hardly any are used. Exploring the Functioning of Peer-to-peer Online Marketplace Platforms in France and Germany
PLENZ, Rikarda Dorothea Ariane
2021 - English
Purpose - To study the habits and preferences of P2P online marketplace platform users overall and also with regard to national differences between a German and a French P2P platform in the context of the sharing economy and sustainable consumption. Methodology - A literature review identified specific items of interest related to sustainable consumption on P2P online marketplace platforms in the con-text of the sharing economy. A questionnaire was developed and self-administered by two groups of respondents: users of the German platform eBay Kleinanzeigen and users of the French platform leboncoin. Findings - There were some distinct differences between user preferences and habits of both platforms, as well as overarching findings about general use and motivations for P2P platform use. ANOVA results, Chi-square Tests of Independence, as well as t-tests identified amongst other things connections between sustainable intentions and higher use frequency, which in turn was connected to a stronger willingness to increase product life cycles by buying, selling, gifting or receiving broken things. Research limitations/implications - The samples for this study were assembled through snowball and convenience sampling. This limited sampling frame may affect the generalization of findings. For some of the hypotheses, the sample size was insufficient to obtain conclusive results. Practical implications - Both researchers on the topic of sustainable consumption in the sharing economy and managers the P2P platforms in question, as well as similar platforms or those who plan to implement similar platforms with the goal of sustainability, can benefit from the findings of this study. Value - This research contributes to the literature by studying user behaviour and preferences regarding P2P online marketplace platforms in the context of sustainable consumption. The Influence of Cross-Border Cooperation on the Competitiveness of Euroregions
FRIEDRICHS, Marco Jerome
2021 - English
This master's thesis analyses the influence of cross-border cooperation on the competitiveness of Euroregions by means of a comparative case study of two selected Euroregions: the Greater Region at the intersection of the borders between the states of Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany, and the Euregio Egrensis, covering territories of the Czech Republic and the three German Länder Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia. The research objective raised first and foremost two questions: How to measure the influence of cross-border cooperation and how to measure the competitiveness of (Euro)regions? This thesis is therefore divided into two parts. First, the key concepts of Euroregions, cross-border cooperation and regional competitiveness are discussed at length as all of them are demanding notions in their own right and their understanding critical for the success of the subsequent comparative case study, which then forms this thesis's second part. Forming Identity in Jennifer Egan's Novels
KOUKLÍKOVÁ, Tereza
2021 - English
V praktické části se práce zabývá konkrétními romány Eganové, Look at Me, The Keep, A Visit from the Goon Squad a Manhattan Beach, a skrze podrobnou analýzu ukazuje, jak v nich s tímto konceptem pracuje. Za pomoci intepretace se snaží postihnout podstatu identit postav, existuje-li, a částečně odpovědět tak i na to, jakou povahu má dnešní americká tvorba. This diploma thesis focuses on the question of identity and its formation in the novels of the contemporary American author, Jennifer Egan. At first, it characterizes the concept of identity in literature in relation to literary characters, and it attempts to define the term as such. After the introduction, it moves to situating the concept in particular literary periods, with an emphasis on the context in which the writer has built her career of a successful novelist and in which there is a continuation of postmodern heritage on the one hand and the emergence of contemporary novelistic writing that is sometimes called "post-postmodernism" on the other hand. In the practical part, the thesis examines selected Egan's novels, Look at Me, The Keep, A Visit from the Goon Squad a Manhattan Beach, and thoroughly analyses how she deals with the topic. By a method of close-reading and interpretation, it aims to capture the essence of characters' identities, if there is any, and subsequently to identify the nature of today's American fiction. Keywords: Jennifer Egan; post-postmodernismus; identita; self; čas; paměť; technologie; současná americká literatura Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.
