Mathematical modelling of geosynthetic tubes

Geosynthetic tubes are comprised of thin sheets and pumped with water or slurry. The tubes are made of synthetic fabrics (geotextile). They have been used as dikes or breakwaters and to prevent beach erosion. They have many other applications in geoengineering.

The topic of the work is modelling of the process of disintegration of degraded layer of construction materials by high-speed water jet during their preparation for repair action. Destructive action of high-speed water jet on concretes of various qualities and corrosion damage degree was studied both experimentally and theoretically. The result of the submitted work is determination of methodology of classification degraded and treated concrete surface.

Measurement of fracture toughness of rocks using deformation characteristics

The paper describes another phase of establishing the methodology of the rocks fracture toughness in the laboratory conditions in the Institute of Geonics. The involvement of an extensometer in the measurement allows us to obtain not only the power but also the deformation characteristics of the damage process. Práce popisuje další fázi zavedení metodiky měření lomové houževnatosti hornin v podmínkách laboratoří ústavu geoniky. Zapojení extenzometru do měření nám umožňuje získat kromě silových, také deformační charakteristiky průběhu procesu porušování.

Changes of the inner structures in Brno under the influence of the demographic changes in the period after 1989

The main purpose of this article is to observe the social and spatial consequences of the process of demographic change exampled on Brno. Spatially, the focus is especially set on inner-city old built-up residential area, which was demarcated based on the aggregation of the selected basic settlements units. The comparison uses the selected demographic characteristic from census 1991 and 2001. The ageing process is stronger in the inner city than in the other urban districts. The inner-city in Brno could be divided according to share of the inhabitants with the tertiary education to the localities with different housing conditions. Příspěvek se zabývá zkoumáním sociálních a prostorových důsledků demografických změna na příkladu města Brna. Prostorově je pozornost zejména zaměřena na oblast vnitřního města s převahou starší předválečné výstavby, přičemž vnitřní město bylo vymezeno za pomoci agregace vybraných základních sídelních jednotek. Komparace využívá některé demografické charakteristiky ze sčítání lidu, domů a bytů z let 1991 a 2001. Proces stárnutí populace je intensivnější ve vnitřním městě než v ostatních částech Brna. Rozdílné zastoupení obyvatel s dokončeným terciálním vzděláním na území různých okrsků vnitřního města vypovídá především o odlišných podmínkách bydlení.

Rural borderland of Czechia

110 border microregions constituted by the catchment centres of authorized municipal authorities were demarcated during the analysis of the Czech borderland. The following facts were stated: a slightly better demographic situation of borderland (particularly the rural one), markedly lower educational level, higher unemployment which is however related to ther structural transition of economy, insufficient infrastructure. Future of the rural borderland is seen more in sustainable settlement than in economic development. Qualification structure seems to the main barrier of development and cross-border co-operation, in which social contacts are being created first while the actual economic co-operation is till at the beginning. Further research will be focused on the microregions of very small centres that might be considered the most problematic. Pro analýzu českého pohraničí bylo vyčleněno 110 pohraničních regionů, tvořených spádovými obvody pověřených obecních úřadů. Byla konstatována následující fakta: mírně příznivější demografická situace pohraničí (zvláště rurálního), výrazně horší vzdělanostní struktura, vyšší nezaměstnanost, která nicméně souvisí především se strukturální přestavbou ekonomiky, nedostatečná infrastruktura. Budoucnost rurálního pohraničí je spatřována spíše v udržitelném osídlení než v ekonomickém rozvoji. Hlavní překážkou rozvoje a přeshraniční spolupráce se zdá být kvalifikační struktura populace. Zatímco sociální kontakty se začaly rozvíjet, zatímco ekonomická spolupráce je na samém začátku. Dašlí výzkum bude zaměřen na mikroregiony velmi malých středisek, která mohou být považována za nejproblematičtější.

On the adaptive time-stepping for the computer simulation of heat and mass transfer in vacuum freeze-drying

The work is motivated by the problem of freeze-drying, which is a process of dehydrating frozen materials by sublimation under high vacuum. Especially, it concerns the mathematical modelling and computer simulation of the heat and mass transfer with the core in solving the time-dependent nonlinear partial differential equation of parabolic type. Instead of an uniform discretization of the considered time interval, an adaptive time stepping procedure is applied in an effort to optimize the whole simulation. The procedure is based on the local comparison of the Crank-Nicholson and backward Euler time steps. The results of numerical experiments performed on a selected real-life problem are included. Práce je motivována úlohou vymrazování, což je proces dehydratace zmrazených materiálů sublimací ve vakuu. Specielně se jedná o matematické modelování a počítačovou simulaci přesunů tepla a hmoty s důrazem na řešení časově závislé nelineární parciální diferenciální rovnice parabolického typu. Místo stejnoměrné diskretizace uvažovaného časového intervalu se aplikuje procedura adaptivních časových kroků ve snaze optimalizovat celou simulaci. Procedura je založena na lokálním srovnání časových kroků Crank-Nicholsonovou a zpětnou Eulerovou metodou. Zahrnuty jsou výsledky numerických experimentů provedených na vybrané reálné úloze.

Numerical illustration of theoretical results for non-linear semi-coercive beam problem

The semi-coercive problem of a beam on a unilateral elastic subsoil of Winkler's type is considered. The aim of this contribution is numerically illustrate some basic results of the problem, which are summarised in the contribution. Concretely, we are interested in dependence of the problem solution on an external load, the error estimates of approximated solutions and the convergence properties of used numerical methods subject to the load. Semikoercivní úloha nosníku na jednostranně pružném podloží Winklerova typu je uvažována. Cílem příspěvku je numericky ilustrovat některé teoretické výsledky zkoumané úlohy, které jsou shrnuty v příspěvku. Konkrétně zkoumáme závislost řešení na zatížení, apriorní odhad chyby mezi původním a přibližným řešením a konvergenční vlastnosti navržených numerických metod.

Small towns as centers of rural micro-regions

The paper deals with the Czech small towns as a centers of rural microregions. Mircoregions in the central European conditions are usually consist of a microregional centre (a small town as a rule) and surrounding villages. Small towns are analyzed by the point of view of services on the basic urban level, jobs, social contacts, occasions of traveling outside of the micro-region, services of the state administration and sometimes also an identity of the micro-region etc. Příspěvek se zabývá malými městy České republiky jako středisky venkovských mikroregionů tvořených ve středoevropském prostoru obvykle mikroregionálním centrem (malým městem) a okolními venkovskými obcemi. Malá města jsou zde analyzována jako centra služeb základní úrovně, jako střediska pracovních příležitostí, lokální dopravní uzly, administrativní střediska, místa sociálních kontaktů, atd.

Settlement development in border regions of the Czech Republic

The article describes population and settlement development of Czech border regions between 1930 and 1974. The study deals with the evaluation of the process of settlement desertion after 2 nd World War, especially after the expulsion of the German population from the Czech Republic. After we analysed about 250 settlement units which were perished in these two decades, we formulate main factors of settlement desertion process. Příspěvek se zabývá vývojem populace a osídlení v pohraničních regionech ČR mezi roky 1930 a 1974. Poukazuje na hlavní příčiny úbytku obyvatelstva v tomto období, prostorově vymezuje oblasti, kde v tomto období zaniklo na 250 sídel, formuluje hlavní příčiny zanikání sídel v pohraničí.

The paper concerns the mathematical modelling of thermo-mechanical processes in nuclear waste repositories. The aim of the contribution is to show the experience with the computing of a large practical problem concerning the assessment of the influence of the distance between the deposition places to the thermo-elastic response of the rock massif. Příspěvek se týká matematického modelování termo-mechanických procesů v úložištích jaderného odpadu. Cílem je prezentovat zkušenosti s řešením rozsáhlých praktických problémů týkajících se vlivu vzdálenosti uložených kontejnerů na termo-elastickou odezvu masívu.
