The Experience of Home and Dwelling in Women's Writing

The aim of this bachelor paper is to provide an analysis of attachments the child protagonists have to a house/home. For the analysis the following novels were chosen: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards and Abela: The Girl Who Saw Lions by Berlie Doherty. The theoretical part outlines the concepts concerning the experience of space and place, particularly the human experience of home and its loss as introduced by Gaston Bachelard, Martin Heidegger and Yi-Fu Tuan. The analytical part explores the ways the child characters experience a sense of home, its loss and the feelings of uprootedness when forced to leave their homeland. The work further focuses on a journey of the protagonists towards finding a family and a new home to live in. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá poslechovými částmi dvou vybraných učenic (Face to Face pre-intermediate a Lifestyle pre-intermediate). Teoretická část se zabývá teoretickým podkladem souvisejícím s tématem. Nalezneme zde čtyři kapitoly: komunikativní kompetenci a komunikativní výuka jazyků, poslech, teorie učebnic, organizace třídy a seskupení studentů. Praktická část obsahuje předvýzkum a výzkum, který ukazuje hodnocení těchto dvou učebnic podle stanovených kritérií. Také zde nalezneme porovnání těchto dvou učebnic. In the theoretical part, firstly, the bachelor thesis focuses on what the textbook functions in the teaching-learning process concerning developing listening skills are. Secondly, the listening presentation and practice in textbooks is elaborated on. Lastly, the evaluation criteria established in the form of a checklist are presented at the end of the theoretical part. In the practical part of the bachelor thesis, the selected textbooks are being evaluated, taking the range of questions covered in the comprehensive checklist into account. This bachelor thesis focuses on the portrayal of the American West in the selected short stories of Bret Harte. Prior to the analysis, historical background concerning the Gold Rush is provided. The significance of Gold Rush and the life of new settlers in the mining communities and the diggings together with methods of mining are presented in the first part of the paper. The second part provides an analysis of Bret Harte's short stories, namely "The Outcasts of Poker Flat", "Tennessee's Partner" and "The Idyl of Red Gulch" with attention to the romanticized characters and the setting that is examined from two perspectives; as an element affecting the characters' destiny and an element that is personified. Tato práce se zabývá problematikou výuky mluvených technik jakožto nedílnou součástí rozvoje mluvení, které patří mezi čtyři základní jazykové dovednosti. Na základě postojů odborníků si teoretická část klade za cíl zjistit, které mluvené techniky jsou považovány za relevantní pro výuku dospělých studentů angličtiny. Práce popisuje aspekty mluvení na základě teoretických konceptů stejně tak jako praktických. Praktická část se zabývá tím, do jaké míry se učitelé soustředí na rozvoj řečových dovedností, a jaký typ mluvených aktivit používají. Praktická část je založena na výzkumu provedeném ve dvou vzdělávacích institucích. This bachelor thesis concerns premodifying nouns in British newspaper reporting. The theoretical part at first outlines various types of premodification. The following chapters describe the main characteristics of noun premodification, nominalization and the issue of the fuzzy boundary between noun phrases and nominal compounds. The objective of the thesis is to find out the frequency of premodifying nouns compared to the other types of premodifiers and to identify what nouns occur in premodification most commonly. The practical part is also comprised of a semantic analysis of the meaning relations between the head noun and the premodifying noun. This bachelor thesis deals with the occurrence and usage of indirect speech acts in business correspondence. The paper aims to examine the illocution functions of the utterances, their degree of politeness and the interpretation of their meanings. Another point is to examine their communication functions and the influence the utterances make on their addressees. The paper is divided into a theoretical section, purpose of which is to investigate the topic of indirect speech acts, and a practical section, in which the aspects discussed in theory are put into practice through exploring a sample of business correspondence. Influence of African-American music on Montage of a Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes

This thesis acquaints readers with the profound influence of African-American music on the poetry of Langston Hughes, more specifically on his poem suite Montage of a Dream Deferred from 1951. The theoretical part provides information about Hughes' cultural background that is inextricably associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Then, basic characteristics and techniques of his poetry are briefly outlined. The development of individual African-American musical forms is discussed. Authors and artists that heavily influenced Hughes are introduced. Afterwards, typical poetic devices and linguistic features of blues and jazz poetry are highlighted for use in the ensuing analysis. The following part thoroughly scrutinizes African-American music elements of eight selected poems from Montage of a Dream Deferred. Subsequently, Hughes' enduring impact is concisely elucidated. Lastly, the results are addressed in the final chapter. Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá oxymórony, které používal William Shakespeare ve svých dílech. Teoretická část práce je rozdělena na dvě části; první část vysvětluje všechny sémantické pojmy, které jsou důležité pro problematiku oxymóronů, zatímco druhá část je gramatická a zabývá se dvěma slovními druhy, ze kterých se většinou oxymórony skládají. Praktická část práce poté zkoumá oxymórony ze dvou úhlů pohledu, které jsou představeny v teoretické části; sémantický pohled na věc zkoumá význam oxymóronů a jejich typické vlastnosti, které pramení z toho, že oxymórony odporují samy sobě, zatímco gramatický pohled na věc kvantitativně analyzuje oxymórony na základě slovních druhů, které je tvoří. Na začátku praktické části se rovněž nachází stručné shrnutí děl, které William Shakespeare napsal, protože je poměrně často důležité porozumět kontextu, ve kterém se oxymórony nacházejí.
