2017 - English This case study discusses the development of courses at the National Library of Technology in Prague (NTK) for different grade levels developed in direct collaboration with several private schools, notably the Austrian School in Prague (OEGP) and the English College in Prague (ECP). These courses were developed in close partnership with teachers at these schools according to specific curricular needs: students at both schools must write a formal paper in order to graduate. For OEGP, a highly structured Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit (VWA), or “pre-scientific paper,” is required by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education (2017) for graduation. ECP students must complete the International Baccalaureate Extended Essay (IB EE). The case study contains descriptions of multilingual courses relevant to any libraries who support multilingual research/writing environments—while the IB EE must be written in English, VWA students can select the language of their papers (Czech, English, or German). This poses unique challenges for both NTK instructors and school teachers because different resources and tools must be introduced for different language environments. In our paper, we describe strategies we have developed to overcome such challenges, including our approach to instruction for citation management tools—we recommend different tools for different languages, for example, and coordinate teaching with teachers based on each school’s curriculum. Although information literacy (IL) is supposed to be included in Czech high school programs as a part of a larger discipline, Informatics and Information and Communication Technology (Výzkumný ústav pedagogický v Praze, 2007), the majority of schools neglect IL almost completely (Medková, 2011). This means, among other things, that NTK instructors and school teachers must include in all courses a heavy emphasis on describing relevant resources and introducing the concept of publication ethics, particularly for schools such as OEGP which do not have their own libraries. The paper outlines the next stages of program development, including planned open access learning materials as well as our efforts in encouraging the Czech Ministry for Education, Youth, and Sports to include a formal paper requirement similar to the VWA or IB EE in future high school graduation requirements. At present, most Czech high school students are not required to write a paper in order to graduate (Parliament of the Czech Republic, 2004; Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, 2009). Finally, we relate whether or not our experiences correspond to findings from original research conducted at NTK identifying a gap in writing and research skills for Czech undergraduates in STEM fields (Chodounská, 2016). V tomto směru máme problémy s hledáním a získáváním odborníků, protože znalci starších technologií jsou již mimo pracovní proces a mladší generace se nemá kde a jak vzdělávat. Příspěvek klade otázky a některé odpovědi na příkladech z praxe v ČR. Media preservation and archiving needs unique skillsets. We live in a time of technology that enables us to utilize it in favor of the world sound cultural heritage, especially in terms of its protection for the next generations. We would like to ask and discuss some crucial questions related to our power, to the IASA aims, objectives and possibilities in the matter of design, promotion and dissemination of training in this area. But it's not just about special education and training in the usual concept. It must go on activities in the broadest sense and widest conception. Great emphasis must be placed on the motivation of getting support from the Decisions makers. We should start with a basic broad awareness. We need advocacy strategies and changing leadership skills. It is necessary to seek new ways of cooperation and ways of thinking. We need reshaping of our own minds, our abilities and skills. Without the young generation we are lost – we need to involve it, to wake up their interest, pass on to them our knowledge and know-how. On several cases from our practice in the CR we will show how successful we were and where we were not. Seznámení s přípravou platformy pro zajištění služeb dodávaní dokumentů včetně MVS: ZÍSKEJ

2017 - Czech Spuštěním portálu Knihovny.cz, který centralizuje fondy českých knihoven, se také zvýšila poptávka z řad odborné veřejnosti knihovníků na návazné služby. Od počátku projektu Centrálního portálu knihoven se počítalo se službou dodávání dokumentů, kterou poskytne Národní technická knihovna. Logickým výsledkem je tedy centralizovaná platforma, která bude s portálem Knihovny.cz sdílet potřebná data, což jí ve výsledku umožní nabídnout službu dodávaní dokumentů včetně MVS. Ambicí připravované platformy je zjednodušit a zatraktivnit přístup čtenářů k fondům knihoven v prostředí internetu, a poskytnout knihovnám přehledný nástroj pro agendu služeb v rámci dodávání dokumentů. Nezbytnou součástí příprav i provozu systému bude aktivní přístup knihoven zejména k parametrizaci služeb. Následující příspěvek chápeme nejen jako možnost informovat o aktuálním stavu příprav nové platformy, ale i jako zahájení vzájemné diskuze a spolupráce napříč odbornou veřejností v knihovnách. Before and Beyond Embedding

2017 - English Rewind the tape telling the story of reference services at the National Library of Technology (NTK) in Prague to 2009: a closed stacks specialized library with a long, complicated institutional history re-opens its arms to the public with a new “open stacks spirit” in an innovative building—an architectural jewel. Students (80% of all visitors) and the public embrace an inspiring space in the heart of a STEM campus and it rapidly fills with activities ranging from conferences to art exhibitions to concerts. But lost in this mélange are modern academic reference and information services. Despite being governed and financed directly by the Czech Ministry of Education, the narrative of value to academic stakeholders is shyly whispered. “We’re the flagship of Czech librarianship,” we gloat. Nothing, and almost no one, shouts: “We can help you succeed in your academic journey.” Fast-forward to 2017. In our paper, we will relate how we are weaving together the first fabrics of academic value narratives. Our story has not been linear; threads related to internal strategic planning, creation of intranets and reusable staff educational modules entwine with other threads (user-based online development, social media statements, “backward designed” instructional efforts) which we discuss using notable examples. Common to all narratives are themes of academic success, rigor, and individual engagement; internally in relation to ongoing staff development and externally, with intimate involvement (even bowling!) with colleagues and students. While our campus may not yet be fully ready for such approaches, we are now strongly declaring our value as essential players in the successful education of students. 2017 - English This illustrative case study describes the evolution of a series of courses (2014-present) aimed at providing advanced students and early career researchers from a Czech science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)campus with the skills they need to adequately participate in global scientific endeavors. The involvement of library staff in the courses described here ranged far beyond embedding in the passive sense of the word, with all aspects of course design, implementation, and revision managed collaboratively and actively by an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional team championed by library personnel. Thus, this study raises the question of whether or not “embedding” is the appropriate term for describing active library leadership in such “catalytic” endeavors. Structurally, the case study will linearly relate how course modules were developed and how the team approached various organizational and structural hurdles which emerged over time. The study will also show how information literacy concepts were woven into the curriculum without being labeled as such - thus identifying a possible necessity for refining the discourse surrounding information literacy concepts so that students and researchers better understand why they are valuable. The study includes original data from course evaluations as well as descriptions of final syllabi (topics covered, readings assigned, types of homework assigned) for two courses, Scientific Writing in English, and Gaining Confidence in Presenting. Because all instruction and materials were delivered in English, the content described will be relevant to anyone working with advanced STEM students and early career researchers who publish in English. Finally, the study relates how such courses provide essential starting points for proactive engagement with patrons and includes examples of dialogues about writing, publishing, and related topics, introducing issues related to blur: the blurring of traditional boundaries between librarianship and scholarship. Digitální repozitář(e) UK - Kde jsme a kam směřujeme?

2017 - Czech Tento příspěvek popisuje nedávné aktivity Ústřední knihovny Univerzity Karlovy týkající se spuštění nového Digitálního repozitáře UK. Univerzita Karlova v rámci tohoto repozitáře zpřístupňuje digitalizovaný i digital-born obsah svým uživatelům (studentům, vyučujícím i další zaměstnancům univerzity), aktuálně zejména kvalifikační a habilitační práce. Cílem tohoto příspěvku je seznámit odbornou veřejnost s procesem tvorby Digitálního repozitáře UK jako služby a také s procesem zpřístupňování kvalifikačních a habilitačních prací. V neposlední řadě je cílem tohoto příspěvku zodpovědět dvě základní otázky: „Kde jsme teď?” a „Kde chceme být?“. This paper describes recent activities of the Central Library of Charles University (based in Prague, Czech Republic) in regards to providing access to digitized and digital-born content, in particular theses and habilitation theses as well as additional varieties of electronic content. Osiřelá díla a díla na trhu nedostupná po novele autorského zákona

2017 - Czech Navrhovaný příspěvek se zaměří na změny, které přinesla poslední velká novela autorského zákona (zákon č. 102/2017 Sb.) pro paměťové instituce. Specifi cky se pak zaměří na problematiku děl osiřelých a děl nedostupných na trhu. Příspěvek provede základní analýzu přijaté úpravy, představí její limity a dopady na knihovnickou praxi. Pozornost bude věnována i připravovaným změnám v této oblasti v právních aktech Evropské unie, zejména pak návrhu Směrnice o autorském právu na jednotném digitálním trhu. The proposed contribution will focus on the changes brought by the last major amendment to the Czech Copyright Act (Act No. 102/2017 Coll.) for the GLAM sector. Specifi cally, it will focus on the issue of orphan works and out-of-commerce works. This contribution shall undertake a basic analysis of the new legal regulation, present its limits and its impact on the practice. Attention will be also paid to the forthcoming changes in this area in the legal acts of the European Union, in particular the proposal for a Directive on copyright in the digital single market.
