Women characters in Jane Austen's novels

The thesis focuses on an analysis of women characters of Jane Austen's novels Emma, Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility. In the first part it briefly deals with historical background of the turn of 18th and 19th century, and Jane Austen's life and work. In the main part of the thesis themes of social class, marriage, a position of women in society, and reputation that are widely reflected in Austen's novels, are analyzed with a focus on the female characters. Another chapter is aimed at an in-depth analysis of major heroines of the novels, and further at a brief analysis and comparison of minor characters that are divided into groups according to the social roles they perform, and characteristic features they share together. This thesis suggests possible use of Roald Dahl´s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in English language teaching. The main concern of this work is to design learning activities aimed at the development of receptive skills that are based on Dahl´s book. Firstly, the essential theoretical background connected to the topic is defined.Secondly, the practical part presents learning activities created with the aim of developing various listening and reading strategies of the learners covered in this thesis. Teaching English Pronunciation to Young Learners - Focus on Accuracy

This thesis deals with the issue of teaching English pronunciation to young learners with the focus on accuracy. The stress is put on the pupils at the age from eight to eleven attending the third, fourth and fifth grades of a primary school. In the theoretical part, basic characteristics of English pronunciation are introduced. Then, the author of this thesis defines the term young learners and states basic specifics of the target age group. In the following chapters of the theoretical part the author mentions suitable techniques and activities used for improving English pronunciation and then she gives a summary of common pronunciation errors of Czech learners. The practical part of this thesis is aimed at young learners´ pronunciation errors and the ways how these errors can be corrected. The stress is put also on the use of various activities and the time spent by working on them. On the basis of classroom observations the author proposes other activities which can be used for improving learners´ pronunciation. Strategies for maintaining discipline in ELT

The aim of the thesis is to introduce the issue of pupil misbehaviour in connection with the strategies the English teachers may use for maintaining the discipline of learners in ELT lessons. The purpose of the first part of the thesis is to provide theoretical background necessary for the follow-up research. In relation to the issue of maintaining discipline in ELT the theoretical part defines the key words such as social behaviour, classroom discipline and pupil misbehaviour, and describes different psychological approaches towards the modification of social behaviour of learners together with preventative and intervention strategies. The emphasis is laid on the former strategies, in particular, on effective teaching in ELT lessons, which is dealt with in more details in the thesis. The following practical part presents a multi-case study which was aimed at investigating what strategies the English teachers use for dealing with the problem behaviour of learners at a typical basic school. For this purpose, two research tools were utilized, including questionnaires for teachers and observations. Integration of learners with specific learning difficulties into mainstream classes

The aim of the thesis is to present the teacher as the key factor in the process of integration of learners with specific learning difficulties. The theoretical part deals with legislation concerning the education of learners with specific learning difficulties in the Czech republic, integration and specific learning difficulties as such. The chapter devoted to the teacher illustrates his position in the teaching-learning process together with the demands placed on the teacher when teaching learners with specific learning difficulties. Subsequently, the importance of cooperation between the teacher, parents and specialists is emphasized since parents and specialists complement the teacher's key role in the process of integration of learners with specific learning difficulties. The practical part aims at ascertaining what demands are placed on the teacher throughout the teaching-learning process. The data gained through observations and interviews led to the design of didactic materials consequently verified at a particular school. Analysis of the gained data offered its interpretation and subsequently the articulation of the conclusion of the thesis. Wilbur Smith´s Egyptian novels

This diploma thesis deals with Wilbur Smith´s tetralogy of "Egyptian" novels and through the consequent analysis tries to reveal the main thematic domains on which the whole series is based on. The preface discusses the theoretical terminology concerning genres such as adventure novel, historical novel and their overlapping and resulting in the genre historical adventure novel for Egyptian series belong into this genre. Then,the biography of the famous author Wilbur Smith with his labelling as a postcolonial writer follows. Thereafter, the principal focus of this work is on the analysis where the main revealed thematic domains regarding historical authenticity, sexuality and violence in terms of incidence and significance. Finally, the complexity of translation of Egyptian novels is dealt with where the main focus is on Smith´s style of writing concerning lexical as well as syntactic features. All these aspects are compared with Czech translations and potential problems discussed. As a matter of the fact that two different translators participated on translating the tetralogy, the complexity of this issue with consequent conclusions are presented too.
