Women in Alcott and Montgomery's work

This thesis focuses on the analysis of the main female characters of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series. It also deals with the general economic and moral status of women in the society by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and with determining to what extent the female characters conform to the societal archetypes and stipulations imposed on them.

Diplomová práce se zabývá rozvojem dovednosti extenzivního čtení ve výuce anglického jazyka v prostředí školní třídy základní školy. Cílem je prezentovat tento přístup jako způsob rozvoje řečové dovednosti čtení s porozuměním. V teoretické části je nejprve rozebrán vztah konceptu komunikativní kompetence a dovednosti čtení, zejména pak čtení extenzivního. Dále se práce soustřeďuje na roli textu v rozvoji této řečové dovednosti. Výběr vhodného materiálu je považován za jeden z aspektů vedoucích k dosažení určeného cíle. Pro vymezení pozice extenzivního čtení v rozvoji čtenářské dovednosti je srovnán tento přístup s přístupem čtení intenzivního. Jako klíčový prvek v rozvoji extenzivního čtení je stanovena pozitivní motivace. Hlavním cílem praktické části bylo dosáhnout zlepšení současné situace ve výuce anglického jazyka pomocí rozvoje extenzivního čtení. Dále pak dokázat, že existuje možnost rozvoje této dovednosti u žáků v kontextu základní školy. Vhodnou metodou k dosažení tohoto cíle byl zvolen akční výzkum. Bylo vybráno několik strategií k naplnění stanoveného záměru. Výzkumné techniky sloužily k zmapování situace a ke sběru dat pro jejich analýzu i interpretaci. Na základě výsledků byl formován závěr diplomové práce.

Material teaching aids in teaching English to young learners

This thesis deals with material teaching aids which can be used in teaching English to young learners in primary schools. The theoretical part introduces the term "young learners" and describes basic characteristics of young learners. The htesis aims at finding out what teaching aids may be used with young learners and how they contribute to the development of their communication competency. The term "communication competency" is explained in the tehoretical part. The practical part describes the research, its process and outcomes. The aim of the research was to find out what teaching aids are used in the English classrooms, the freyuency of their use, how they are appreciated by the pupils and how they develop the communication competency. The research gained qualitative and quantitative data which were analysed statistically and interpretatively. Two teachers were involved in the research and the aim was to find out how they can benefit from using particular teaching aids. The research instruments were designed to gain the data for the purpose of this research. The outcomes were described in connection with the overall aim of the thesis.

Figures of Speech and Their Application in Political Speeches

This diploma paper deals with figurative language in public speeches, namely metaphors. The theoretical part defines figurative language and both historical overview and categorization of metaphors. It also sums up what role metaphors play in our lives. The focus of this part are conceptual metaphors. In the practical part, the theory is applied to recent inauguration addresses of US presidents. Metaphors are located and then their meaning, motivation and other aspect which are mentioned in the theoretical part are analyzed. Moreover, the analysis deals with the occurance of metaphors to find out frequency and also what are the prevailing types of metaphors.

Cílem této diplomové práce je výzkum různých apozicí v novinářských textech. Teoretická část vysvětluje jednotlivé typy apozicí, jejích rozmístění, funkcí, formálního vyjádření a rysů a komunikačního efektu na čtenáře. Základný rysy žurnalistického stylu jsou také popsány.
Praktická část je rozdělena do dvou sekcí - kvantitativní analýza a kvalitativní analýza. V kvantitativní části je prokazováno pět hypotéz založených na studované literatuře a zkoumaném korpusu (novinové články). Kvalitativní analýze se soustředí na jednotlivé typy apozicí, rozbor určitých nálezů z korpusu a jejich možným vlivem na čtenáře.

Characteristic Features of Terms in English Football TV Commentaries

The thesis deals with terminology and formulaic language in English football TV commentaries. The aim is to investigate characteristic features of terms and multi-word items, especially the form, word classes, and syntactical function, which appear in the language of football commentaries. In the theoretical part, linguistic literature relevant to the topic is analysed in order to create a concept of criteria which is later employed as a framework in the practical part of the paper. The practical part focuses on the analysis of collected football commentary corpus. The terms and multi-word items are identified and qualitatively scrutinised for their characteristic features. Subsequently, the occurrence of the individual forms of terminological units is quantitatively processed. Finally, the author offers his interpretations of the findings.

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza vybraných Hartových povídek, ve kterých bude brán zřetel na zachycení zlaté horečky a charakteristiku spisovatelova literárního stylu a prostředků, kterých využívá. Tato analýza se opírá o jedny z jeho neoceňovanějších děl "The Luck of Roaring Camp" a "The Outcast of Poker Flat". Dále bude také poukázáno na recepci a vliv, jež jeho krátká vyprávění měly na širokou veřejnost. V závěru budou Hártova díla porovnána s jinými literárními pracemi podobně zaměřenými.

Thomas Hardy´s extended verse drama The Dynasts, in contrast to his novels, has gained neither stable appreciation of critics nor the interest of readers. With respect to the progress of English verse drama and the author´s developing concept of processing the theme of the Napoleonic Wars this thesis analyses the philosophical and historical issues of the drama, the main characters, style and dramatic devices used in the drama. The thesis tries to reveal the aspects which contribute to the failure of Hardy´s monumental work. The thesis also attempts to find the features of the drama which are of great value also in the 21st century.

The aim of this thesis is to lay down a general view of the position of women in society during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America as a framework for the wider analysis. The thesis will continue to show how women were challenging society and actively seeking to change their position through movements such as the suffragette movement. The thesis will trace how the position of women was shown in the works of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Benigna Machiavelli and Kate Chopin's The Awakening, and to what extent the ideas of these authors represented the changing ideas of society at this critical time in American history.It will compare the marked difference in the American public's reaction to these authors and their works to create an analysis of the struggle women were faced with. It will also show the extent to which these authors were offering guidance to women for a better future, and how much they were simply describing the times.
