The Role of Hedges in Political Discourse in Connection with Lying, Deceiving and Bullshitting

Cieľom tejto práce bolo poskytnúť súhrn literatúry, ktorá sa zaoberá kooperačným princípom, klamstvom či bullshittingom a taktiež súhrn teórií, ktoré opisujú náturu a funkcie "hedžov". Prvá, teoretická časť, tiež vysvetľuje spojitosť medzi spomínanými javmi. Praktická časť práce, ktorá je založená na klasifikácii "hedžov" vypracovanej v súlade s literatúrou použitou v teoretickej časti, obsahuje kvantitatívnu, ako aj kvalitatívnu analýzu "hedžov" a "boostrov" v politickom diskurze. Kvantitatívna ako aj kvalitatívna analýza skúma výskyt spomínaných výrazov v prezidentských debatách so zameraním na nepravdivé výroky. Práca skúma nielen výskyt a typológiu "hedžov" a "boostrov", ale aj charakter nepravdivých výrokov a ich zmenu z diachronického hľadiska. Práca sa snaží zodpovedať otázku, či existuje spojitosť medzi "hedžmi" a bullshittingom a či ich nedostatok v reči môže predznamenávať snahu o bullshitting zo strany rečníka. Práca tiež vysvetľuje, prečo je bullshiting považovaný za fenomén takzvanej "post-truth doby", v ktorej sa podľa mnohých žijeme od roku 2016 . The aim of this thesis is to provide an overview of the literature concerning cooperative principle, lying, deceiving and bullshiting, as well as the literature describing functions and importance of hedges and boosters. The theoretical part also explains the connections between these terms. The practical part includes a qualitative and quantitative analysis, based on the classification of the examined expressions, which was made in accordance with the literature used in the theoretical part. The thesis seeks to answer the question, whether can be hedges, especially their lack and avoidance, one of the defining features of bullshiting. The thesis demonstrates why is bullshiting believed to be part of the "post-truth age", which supposedly started in 2016.

Tato práce je zaměřená na obrazy ženské krásy v americké společnosti, a pozitivní a negativní efekty těchto obrazů na sebepojetí žen pocházejících z různých etnických prostředí. Práce se sestává z dvou hlavních částí: afro-americké a asijsko-americké zkušenosti, přičemž každá z nich se dále dělí na teoretickou část, jejíž náplní je zejména vykreslení kulturního a historického kontextu, který je nutná pro pochopení analyzovaných literárních děl a sociálního postavení jednotlivých etnik, a praktickou část, která se věnuje amotné analýze děl autorek pocházejících z těchto dvou prostředí. This thesis concentrates on the images of feminine beauty in the mainstream American society, the ideals of beauty that they represent and the effects that the ideals have on women of different ethnicities. The thesis is divided into two main parts: African American and Asian American experience. Theoretical part provides a historical and cultural context which is necessary for understanding the literary works analyzed in the thesis and the position of the individual ethnic groups within the mainstream American society. Practical part focuses on the analysis itself.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá bulvarizací sportovního zpravodajství v Česku a USA. V první řadě jsou definovány způsoby bulvarizace, které jsou součástí teoretické části této diplomové práce. Další část představuje samotný výzkum a popisuje kvantitativní obsahovou analýzu, kódovací jednotku, výzkumné otázky a kódovací postup. V druhé části této diplomové práce jsou představeny výsledky výzkumu kvantitativní obsahové analýzy a výsledky jednotlivých kategorií jsou popsány a představeny jednotlivě a poté je představeno srovnání výsledků vzhledem k výzkumným otázkám. V poslední části této diplomové práce je nejdříve představena metodologie kvalitativní obsahové analýzy a poté je provedena samotná analýza, která je zakončena shrnutím výsledků kvalitativní obsahové analýzy. This diploma thesis deals with tabloidization in sport news in the Czech Republic and the USA. First, the theoretical background surrounding tabloidization is examined and specific means of tabloidization are defined. Next part of this thesis defines the research itself and the strengths and weaknesses of the quantitative and qualitative content analysis are described. After that, the coding unit, the research questions and the coding scheme are presented. The second part of this thesis consists of the results of the research of the quantitative content analysis and each means of tabloidization is presented and commented on separately and then the results are compared in relation to the research questions. The final part of this thesis first presents the methodology of the qualitative content analysis and then the analysis itself is presented with a summary of the results from the qualitative content analysis at the end.

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá jazykové prostředky, jakými se vyjadřuje metadiskurz v dopisech určených akcionářům na úvod výročních zpráv firem. První část obsahuje teoretický úvod do problematiky a přístupy ke klasifikaci metatextových prostředků. V další části jsou prezentovány výsledky analýzy českých a anglických textů, které jsou následně porovnávány z hlediska množství a typu metadiskurzu. Analýza vychází z Hylandovy klasifikace, která rozlišuje deset typů metadiskurzu. Součástí této diplomové práce je také rétorika v dopisech akcionářům. Všechny texty jsou zkoumány z hlediska toho, jakým způsobem je v nich realizovány přesvědčovací funkce projevu. This MA thesis explores language resources of metadiscourse in Czech and English CEOs' letters. The first part contains theoretical introduction and approaches to classification of metadiscourse. In the next parts, the results of analyses of Czech and English texts are presented. The results are subsequently compared in terms of quantity and type of metadiscourse. The analysis is based on Hyland's classification which distinguishes ten types of metadiscourse. This thesis also explores rhetoric in CEOs' letters. All texts are examined in terms of how they realize rhetorical appeals.

Tato práce zkoumá postmoderní narativní techniky v románu House of Leaves od Marka Z. Danielewskiho a způsob, kterým je autor používá. První kapitola poskytuje úvod do teorie postmoderních narativních technik. Druhá kapitola román stručně shrnuje. Poslední kapitola analyzuje specifické techniky, které jsou v románu použity, a to od technik tvorby světů jako je mise en abyme a smyčka, až po textové techniky paralelních textů a ilustrací. The thesis explores postmodern narrative techniques in the novel House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski; and the manner, in which the author uses them. The first chapter provides an introduction to the theory of postmodern narrative techniques. The second chapter briefly summarizes the novel. The final chapter analyzes the specific techniques used in the novel from world-making techniques of mise-en-abyme and metalepsis, to textual techniques of parallel texts and illustrations.

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na použití a funkce emotikonů a emoji jako součásti psaného jazyka a jejich význam v praxi. Práce začíná definicí emotikonů a emoji. Dále pokračuje stručný přehled proč a jak vznikly a také jak se postupně vyvíjely až do dnešní podoby, jako součást počítačem zprostředkované komunikace. Po úvodních informacích následuje podrobný rozbor vlastnosti emotikonů a emoji z hlediska významu. Podkladem tohoto rozboru je teorie sedmi typů významů podle Geoffreyho Leeche. Nejdříve je typ významu vysvětlen ve smyslu slov. Jednotlivé typy významu jsou dále postupně aplikovány na emotikony a emoji. Praktická část práce rozebírá data dotazníků a také ukázky z Twitteru a posuzuje, zda jsou emotikony a emoji schopny vyjádřit rozdílné typy významu. Přídavná část je zaměřena na možnost jejich stupňování. Práce je zakončena přehledem existující literatury a nalezených dat, které probírají použití emotikonů a emoji z hlediska věku, pohlaví, kultury, motivace komunikace a mentální stav uživatele. This thesis focuses on the use and function of emoticons and emojis in written communication and their meaning in practice. The thesis begins with a definition of emoticons and emojis. This is then followed by a brief look at their origins and the reasons for their creation to better understand their original purposes and how they developed to become a regular part of computer-mediated communication. After the introductory information, emoticons and emojis undergo a detailed investigation exploring some of their possible properties of meaning. The exploration is done on the basis of Geoffrey Leech's seven types of meaning. First the meaning type is explained with application to words, as originally intended by Leech. Each meaning type is then applied to emoticons and emojis. The practical component of this thesis analyzes data collected from surveys and twitter samples to draw conclusions on how well emoticons and emojis perform in conveying each meaning type. An additional section on the gradability of emoticons and emojis is also attached to this section. Following this is a short review of existing literature and data on the variations of emoticon and emojis use according to age, gender, culture, motivation of communication, and mental state of the writer.

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje hodnotící výrazy z článků, které byly publikovány na internetových stránkách novin seriózního tisku The Guardian, The Telegraph a bulvárního The Daily Mirror and The Sun. Zabývá se výskytem hodnotících slov v online verzích čtyř britských deníků, mezi které patří dva zástupci seriózního tisku (The Guardian, The Telegraph) a dva zástupci bulvárního tisku (The Daily Mirror, The Sun). Teoretická část popisuje žurnalistický styl, důsledky publikování novin na internetu, funkci hypertextu a kategorii hodnocení Moniky Bednarek. Krátce popisuje jednotlivé typy vybraných novin a hlavní rozdíly mezi nimi. Tato práce ukazuje rozdíly bulvárního a kvalitního tisku. Dále se věnuje rozdělení kategorii hodnocení, kterou popisuje Monika Bednarek. Pro tuto diplomovou práci jsem zvolila přístup Moniky Bednarek. Monika Bednarek rozděluje hodnotící slova do parametrů, které aplikuje v korpusu. Na základě analýzy deseti článků pro každé noviny popisuje jednotlivé parametry, kombinace, které se v korpusu objevují. Seriózní tisk by měl přinášet publiku objetivní a kvalitní obsah, který je založen na faktech. Na druhou stranu bulvár je pro společnost více subjektivní a evaluativní. Bulvární tisk se zaměřuje na emoce a lidské příběhy, které se odráží i na úvodních stránkách tisku. Praktická část popisuje typické rysy pro oba dva druhy novin. K tomuto účelu bylo vybráno 40 článků dvojic článků na stejné téma, které byly otištěny ve všech vybraných novinách. Hlavním cílem této práce je analýza použitých stylistických prostředků výchozích textů, které se následně porovnají navzájem. V závěru práce následuje shrnutí získaných poznatků. The present diploma thesis analyses evaluative expressions in selected British broadsheets and tabloids. Theory describes online journalism, the function of hypertexts, core and evaluative parameters as they were established by Monika Bednarek (2006). This is followed by a brief description of the selected newspapers. It is often stated that broadsehets stil preserve their objectivity - but is this proposition still valid? Which of the newspapers produce more evaluative parameters, the broadsheets or the tabloids?

Práce se týká autorčiny analýzy Charlese Bukowského, jeho života a jeho tvorby v kontextu doby a jeho vrstevníků z generace Beatníků. Zabývá se povídkami ze sbírky "Nejkrásnější ženská ve městě". Tvorba Bukowského a Beatníků vykazuje zajímavé podobnosti a odlišnosti. The thesis concerns the author's analysis of Charles Bukowski, his life and writing in connection to the era and his contemporaries of The Beat Generation. It deals with the short stories in the collection The Most Beautiful Woman in Town. The works of Bukowski and The Beat Generation show interesting resemblances and differences.

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje tématu výuky angličtiny u žáků a studentů se speciálními vzdělávacími potřebami. V teoretické části vymezuje, kdo jsou to dle platné legislativy osoby se speciálními vzdělávacími potřebami. Nechybí klasifikace a symptomatologie jednotlivých skupin osob. Práce se rovněž věnuje profesní přípravě učitelů angličtiny působících na českých školách a jejich míře připravenosti na práci se žákem/studentem s SVP. Velký prostor je věnován metodologii a doporučeným přístupům ve výuce cizího jazyka. Praktická část hodnotí výsledky dotazníkového šetření mezi učiteli anglického jazyka na základních školách v okrese Olomouc. This final project deals with the topic of teaching English to learners with special education needs. In its theoretical part it defines who are the special educational needs learners according to the valid legislation. There are different cathegories of disabilities and their symptomatology being discussed. The project also deals with the pregraduate training of teachers of English working at Czech schools and the level of their knowledge and awareness of SEN learners. Much space is given to methodology and recommended approaches in foreign language teaching. The practical part evaluates the results of research made among teachers of English at primary schools in the district of Olomouc.

Predmetom magisterskej diplomovej práce Súčasný vývoj kastového systému etnickej menšiny Yi v oblasti Liangshan na začiatku 21. storočia je analýza vývoja kastového systému u etnickej skupiny Nuosu-Yi na začiatku 21. storočia. Analýza vývoja kastového systému je realizovaná na základe dát, pri ktorých zbere bola využitá metodológia kvalitatívneho výskumu - rozhovory a pozorovanie. Zber dát bol realizovaný v období od februára do augusta 2017 v čínskom meste Chengdu v provincii Sichuan a v Autonómnej prefektúre etnickej menšiny Yi Liangshan. Cieľovou skupinou terénneho výskumu sú mladí Nuosu-Yi študenti vysokých škôl. Práca je zameraná na sledovanie vývoja troch aspektov nuoskej kultúry: nuoských klanov, kást a kastovej endogamie. Práca ponúka pohľad do problematiky prostredníctvom ukážok z neštruktúrovaných a pološtruktúrovaných rozhovorov a následnej komparácie ich výpovedí s dielami iných autorov, ktorí sa vedecky tejto téme venovali v minulosti, konkrétne v 70. a 90. rokoch minulého storočia. The objective of the presented master's thesis Changes in the Caste System of the Yi Ethnic Minority in Liangshan at the Beginning of the 21st Century is to examine the development of the Nuosu-Yi caste system in the early 21st century. The analysis of the caste system development is based on data collected using the methodology of qualitative research - interviews, and observation. Data collection was conducted from February to August 2017 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province and the Autonomous Prefecture of Yi Ethnic Minority Liangshan. The target group of the field research has been young Nuosu-Yi University students. The paper describes the development of three cultural phenomena of the Nuosu-Yi society: Nuosu-Yi clans, the caste system, and caste endogamy. The paper offers an insight into the issue by displaying fragments of unstructured and semi-structured interviews with the research participants and a subsequent comparison of their testimonies with works of other authors who had studied the topic in the past, namely in the 1970s and 1990s.
