A 'social Europe' for workers? Framing analysis of the posted work debate in the Council (2016-2017)
BRUNET, Mathilde Marguerite Anni; POSPÍŠIL, Richard
2018 - English
In a context of rising inequalities in the European Union, accompanied by a certain mistrust in the capacity of the European institutions to improve and secure the social conditions of the citizens, the question of 'social Europe' is more than ever source of debate and interrogations. Focusing on the revision of the Posting of Workers Directive, proposed by the Commission in 2016, this thesis analyses the way the European Ministers framed this revision and 'social Europe' more broadly during the negotiations. This work contributes to the existing research on elite framing and expands this field to 'negotiations analysis', a topic which has rarely been addressed. The analysis, based on Helbling's frame categorisation, shows that workers' social protection is a divisive issue which opposes two main groups: the proponents (high wage member states) and the opponents (low wage member states). The first group frames 'social Europe' as a way to restore trust in the European economic model, jeopardised by the downward pressure on wages and social conditions caused by low wage member states. On the other hand, opponents to the revision frame social policies as disruptive forces damaging the single market's competitiveness and economic freedoms. They portray themselves as the victims of an unwelcome protectionism orchestrated by high wage member states. These findings question the future of 'social Europe', as they bring to light the unwillingness of both sides to rethink the European economic system. In the absence of a strong and positive 'counter-narrative', it seems that social policies will continue to be seen as hindering economic freedoms or as a mean to legitimise a system that has proven to be unequal. In that sense, the European social project did not yet reach the 'status' of the economic project and is still understood as a side issue that cannot challenge the status quo. If framed differently, social welfare in the Union could become a priority and take precedence over the fundamental freedoms that have been defined twenty-five years ago, in a very different socio-economic and political context. Remembering the past, making sense of the present, and looking towards the future: The House of European History as the constructor of 'Europe's narrative'
OOSTENBRUG, Agatha Geertrui; ŠVAŘÍČKOVÁ SLABÁKOVÁ, Radmila
2018 - English
The House of European History (HEH) is a museum in Brussels that addresses the notion of a common European history and memory, and aims to provide its visitors with a "reservoir of European memory" in order for the visitors to reflect and come up with what constitutes a common European history for them. It opened in May 2017, and was an initial idea of the former president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering. Before and after its opening, the museum was met with widespread criticism, mainly for its 55 million euro price-tag, but also for its supposed political agenda. However, the museum enjoys a high level of academic independence, and therefore its meaning goes deeper than that of a mere political tool. The HEH makes an interesting subject of research, as it opened very recently, and therefore it is still fairly unexplored. This thesis researches the narrative that the HEH constructs and presents in its permanent exhibition, by looking at two focus points: (i) the differing histories of Central and Eastern Europe opposed to Western Europe in a post-WWII setting; and (ii) the history of European integration in the twentieth century. The research draws on fieldwork done in January and April 2018, as well as qualitative analysis of secondary literature, with influences from museum studies and public history. The research is placed in a theoretical framework of history and memory studies, and it puts these notions in a European context. As became clear from the research, the HEH includes Central and Eastern European histories as well as their Western counterpart, mostly juxtaposing, comparing and contrasting them as in not to treat them in their respective national histories but in a pan-European setting. Regarding European integration, the museum chose an approach in the form of 'milestones', events that were significant for the process of European integration, displayed in glass columns throughout the floors of the exhibition, respective of their historical context. The thesis concludes with the statement that the narrative the museum constructs means something in itself: the museum has provided a concrete space with tangible objects to represent a common European history and memory, and consequently an abstract space is created as well, in which this notion can be substantiated or refuted. Framing the Crisis of EU Fundamental Values: Levels of Europeanization in Dutch Newspapers
MULLER, Pim Antonius Alexander; SZTWIERTNIA, Radomir
2018 - English
There is an ongoing political debate in the European Union about the state of democracy and the rule of law in two of its member states: Poland and Hungary. Since these issues do not only pertain to the rule of law, but to the fundamental values of the EU in general, it is argued that a "Crisis of EU Fundamental Values" is a more appropriate term than a "Rule of Law Crisis", which is often used. The issues that the governments of Poland and Hungary pose for the EU raise critical questions about the development of the European integration project. This thesis therefore relates this crisis to two important theoretical concepts in the field of European Studies: Europeanization and the European Public Sphere. Through a qualitative framing analysis of 49 opinion articles in Dutch quality newspapers, it is shown that there are fundamental differences in the understanding of the crisis of EU fundamental values between, in this case, a center-leftwing oriented newspaper (De Volkskrant) and a center-rightwing oriented newspaper (NRC Handelsblad). In discussing the issue, De Volkskrant related its readers to Poles and Hungarians through their shared European citizenship and published fundamental criticisms on the European Union, while NRC Handelsblad emphasized differences between Eastern- and Western Europe and urged the EU to defend the liberal democratic status-quo. These differences could have important implications for future research on Europeanization and the European Public Sphere. These implications will be assessed and discussed. LGBTQ Muslims Promotion through Internet: Practices of Intersectionality
MAULANI, Annissa; TOPINKA, Daniel
2018 - English
The relation between the Muslim community and LGBTQ people in the West is very complex. Some supporting groups are set in order to provide shelter for the LGBTQ Muslims population. The main goal of this research is to explore the LGBTQ Muslim groups' online platforms utilized in narrating their intersecting identities and as a platform to combat discrimination towards minority groups. In order to analyze the data, this research adapts intersectionality as the methodological approach. The finding of this research demonstrates that both groups have successfully engaged with the concept of intersectionality by showing many aspects of dual identity. (Re)Writing History: How Germany and France Create and Project EU Narratives Abroad
ROGERS, Lauren Kay; PETLACH, Martin
2018 - English
This thesis begins with a discussion on narratives in the international system, what kinds of power they exert, and how they provide structure. This will lead into the conceptual debate of narratives as tools vs narratives as identity, which will in turn raise questions about how actors use narratives to maintain ontological security. Within the context of the EU, these questions are of particular relevance, as the struggle to create a narrative for the EU is well documented. Moreover, there remains a struggle to convince member states of the importance of an EU narrative identity. This thesis will examine the area of common foreign and security policy (CFSP) through the lens of narrative analysis. The case study of the formation and projection of the EU narrative on the Iran Nuclear Deal has been selected to determine whether or not member states in the EU are faithful to EU foreign policy narratives. An analytical framework has been developed based on strategic narrative theory and will be used to test narrative output from the EU, Germany, and France on the subject of the Iran Nuclear Deal. The results of this analysis will be considered using a reflexive approach. The goal of this research is not to implicate EU member states or to imply a lack of commitment to EU CFSP. Rather, this thesis seeks to demonstrate how deep-seated narratives affect even the closest of alliances. This thesis also seeks to encourage policy makers and scholars to consider the importance of narrative integration in EU research. 'Narrative' has become such a pervasive term in media and political jargon that its theoretical backbone has become harder to trace. With this in mind, this thesis seeks to contribute to the theoretical understanding of narratives in international relations research, with a focus on the European Union. Combatting Fake News: a Patočkean Analysis Promoting a Socratic Attitude and Active Citizenship.
SOFIZADE, Jessica Margriet Naomi; STEJSKAL, Jan
2018 - English
One of the most heated subjects which is currently being debated on an international scale is the problem of 'fake news'. It is widely considered a significant challenge for contemporary societies, and has even been called a threat to liberal democracies. This paper will investigate how are we able to combat this problem and find a long-term solution, in order to protect our societies from the harmful consequences of fake news. This will lead to an examination of the position of truth in the political sphere, its role in our epistemic lives, and the place truth has within news and media. It will be shown that fake news can be understood as essentially a problem concerning truth, our relationship to it, and its role in the political sphere. This issue will be explored using the case study of Jan Patočka, whose philosophical analysis can provide an illuminating way of understanding and finding a solution to fake news. Additionally, the example of Sweden will be examined in order to demonstrate how my conclusions can be implemented in practice. The latter empirical case study will demonstrate ways in which critical citizens can be fostered in a society. Overall, it will be argued that the best long-term way in which we can combat fake news is through the constant search for truth and for justifications for our beliefs, as well as taking responsibility for our knowledge. This solution to fake news necessitates independent responsibility, a 'Socratic' attitude towards truth, and active citizenship, which together constitute a political mode of existence. In addition to personal responsibility, institutional responsibility is vital in order to engender this attitude amongst citizens. This can be done through education or promoting media literacy, as well as ensuring an open society in which debate is encouraged, and returning the authority of truth in the public sphere. The proposed conclusion therefore emphasises the significance of the individual, who must be epistemically responsible for their beliefs, and the importance of institutions, which play a crucial role in making critical citizens. Fake news must be targeted at its fundamental level, namely as a problem of truth, and it is therefore vital that a Socratic attitude be encouraged in current liberal democracies, before there are further significant political events which are influenced by fake news. Formal Properties of Bare Infinitival Constructions in English
HONAJZROVÁ, Iva; EMONDS, Joseph; VESELOVSKÁ, Ludmila
2018 - English
The thesis is concerned with formal properties of bare infinitival constructions in English. In the first part, the distribution of the bare infinitives is summarized. In the second part, the thesis is concerned with restructuring and investigates whether the constructions with bare infinitives comply with restructuring properties and whether these constructions evince transparency with respect to otherwise clause-bounded processes. In the third part, the thesis is concerned with the limitations of combinations of Voice and Aspects in the constructions with bare infinitives. Keywords: holé infinitivy; restrukturalizace; vid; rod; angličtina; bare infinitives; restructuring; aspect; voice; English Available in digital repository of UPOL.

Rozvíjení sociolingvistické kompetence na 2. stupni základních škol
ŠKOPÍKOVÁ, Stanislava; BABICKÁ, Blanka; NEVAŘIL, Josef
2018 - English
Navrhuje řešení překážek rozvoje uvedených kompetencí v rovině materiální, konkrétně učebních osnov, výukových materiálů a vzdělávání učitelů. A poukazuje na příčiny problémů interkulturní komunikace a jejich případné řešení s cílem rozvoje sociolingvistických kompetencí jakožto integrální části kulturní identity každého žáka. The diploma thesis deals with the development of sociolinguistic competence at lower-secondary schools. It aims at the analysis of sociolinguistic competence status in respect to communicative competence, conception of politeness and culture. Based on the relationship of sociolinguistic and pragmatic competence, the thesis analyses the CEFR requirements that are flowingly compared with the language aspects of the Frame of Educational Plan. The ascertained facts are placed in the context with the results of small-scale research which was directed at the teachers' opinions regarding significance of development of the competence with respect to their knowledge and direct experience with pupils and teaching materials. The thesis suggests solutions to obstacles in the way of development of the competence that appear on the material level, particularly in relation to curricula, teaching materials and teachers' training. It points out the causes of intercultural miscommunication and possible solutions that would lead to the development of the competence an integral part of a cultural identity of each pupil.
