Vampirism and Queerness in Nineteenth-Century Literature

Cílem této práce je analýza spojení mezi vampirismem a queer motivy v dílech Drákula od Brama Stokera a Krev upírky od Florence Marryat. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První část se zabývá vztahem viktoriánské Anglie k sexualitě a spojitostí mezi queer motivy a gotickým románem 19. století. Věnujeme se zde rozdílnému vnímání mužské a ženské homosexuality a zobrazování tzv. "Others" v dobové literatuře. Ve druhé části se zaměříme na interpretaci díla Drákula z hlediska queer teorie, a to prostřednictvím hraběte Drákuly a role, kterou v románu představuje, včetně jeho vztahu k ostatním mužským postavám. Třetí část se soustředí na analýzu díla Krev upírky, které popisuje osud ženské upírky Harriet Brandt. Nakonec se práce zabývá aspekty jinakosti, kterými Harriet ohrožuje viktoriánskou společnost, a zároveň dvojznačným chápáním tohoto díla. The aim of this thesis is the analysis of the connection between vampirism and queerness in Bram Stoker's Dracula and Florence Marryat's The Blood of the Vampire. The Master's thesis is divided into three parts. The first part examines the relationship of Victorian England to sexuality and the connection between queerness and the 19th-century Gothic novel. We will pay attention to the different perceptions of male and female homosexuality and the portrayal of the so-called "Others" in contemporary literature. In the second part, we will focus on the interpretation of Dracula in terms of queerness, namely through Count Dracula and the role he plays in the novel, including his relations to the other male characters in the novel. The third part concentrates on the analysis of The Blood of the Vampire, describing the fate of female vampire Harriet Brandt. Finally, the thesis explores the aspects of Harriet's Otherness that Harriet threatens Victorian society with, as well as the ambiguous understanding of this work.

Cílem této práce je analýza společenského postavení hlavních postav v románech Jane Austenové, konkrétně Pýchy a Předsudku a Emmy. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. První se zabývá autorkou Jane Austenovou, jejím životem a tvorbou a následně autory, jež Austenovou ovlivnili při jejím psaní. Druhá kapitola nám přibližuje dobu, kdy autorka žila, tedy Anglii 19. století. Době se přezdívalo Regentská Anglie a přiblížíme si zde roli a rozdíly v životě žen a mužů a ekonomickou situaci, jak obecně v 19. století, tak v románech Jane Austenové. Budou uvedeny příklady, kolik vydělávali hlavní hrdinové. Třetí část už se soustředí na samotnou hlavní postavu románu Emma. Popisuje rysy, kterými se Emma liší od ostatních hrdinek ve zbytku Austenových románů. Zároveň projednává její postavení v kruhu společnosti, ve kterém se vyskytuje. Druhá podkapitola odkrývá vztah s nejbližšími postavami, se kterými Emma přišla do kontaktu. Poslední kapitola Elizabeth Bennetová má trochu jinou strukturu než předchozí, i přes to že cílem práce je hlavní hrdinky vrhnou na stejné světlo. Vymezuje limity Bennetovy rodiny, které souvisí s jejich příjmem, a tudíž limituje jejich společenské postavení ve společnosti. V poslední kapitole je zahrnuta i Elizabetina ženskost. Na závěr práce porovnávám naše dvě hrdinky, konkrétně jejich osobnost, pohled na manželství, rozvoj charakteru a sociální postavení. This thesis aims to analyze the social status of the main characters in Jane Austen's novels, specifically Pride and Prejudice and Emma. The bachelor thesis is divided into four chapters. The first deals with the author Jane Austen, her life and work, and then focus on the authors who influenced Austen in her writing. The second chapter brings us closer to the time when the author lived in England in the 19th century. The era was called the Regency Era and we going to look at the role and differences in the lives of women and men and the economic situation, both in general in the 19th century and in Jane Austen's novels. Examples of how much the main male characters earned going to be given. The third part finally focuses on the main character of the novel, Emma. It describes the features that make Emma different from the other heroines in the rest of Austen's novels, while also discussing her position in the circle of society in which she existed. The second sub-chapter reveals the relationship with the closest characters with whom Emma came into contact. The last chapter of Elizabeth Bennet has a slightly different structure than the previous one, even though the work tries to cast the main characters in the same light. It defines the limits of the Bennet family, which is related to their income and therefore limits their social status in society. Elizabeth's womanhood is also included in the last chapter. At the end of the work, I compare our two heroines, specifically their personalities, views on marriage, character development, and social status.

The Reception of Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zaměřit se na problematiku recepce díla Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl od afroamerické autorky Harriet Jacobs. Ačkoli je tato autobiografie, poprvé vydaná počátkem roku 1861, dnes známá jako jedno z nejpřednějších děl tzv. slave narratives, vyprávění otroků, jeho autenticita a autorství byly zpochybňovány po mnoho dekád, a teprve koncem 20. století byla kniha opět uznána jako hodnotné a pravdivé osobní svědectví toho, co pro afroamerické ženy znamenalo otroctví ve Spojených státech před občanskou válkou. Tato práce se tedy soustředí jak na recepci dobovou, s přihlédnutím především k historickým okolnostem abolicionismu a začátku občanské války, tak i na recepci současnou, zejména na kritické ohlasy 20. století a následnou kanonizaci díla. Klíčovým faktorem této analýzy bude mnohonásobná diskriminace, jež ovlivňovala život i práci Harriet Jacobs jakožto sexuálně zneužívané ženy afroamerického původu. The aim of this thesis is to explore the problematics of the reception of Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Though this autobiography, first published at the beginning of 1861, is today known as one of the most major works of the genre of slave narratives, its authenticity and authorship have been questioned and denied for several decades, and only by the end of the 20th century has the narrative been recognized as a valuable and truthful personal testimony of what slavery meant for African American women in antebellum America. This thesis then focuses on both the contemporary reception, mainly with regard to the historical circumstances of abolitionism and the upcoming Civil War, and a more recent one, predominantly on 20th-century criticism and the subsequent canonization of the narrative. The key factor of this analysis will be the multiple discrimination which affected the life and work of Harriet Jacobs as a sexually abused woman of African American descent.

Role of the serotonin receptor type 7 (5-HT7) in autoimmune disease

Serotonin receptor type 7 (5-HT7) displays immunomodulatory functions and is overexpressed in individuals with Crohn's disease. Here, we set out to determine 5-HT7 mode of interaction with its cognate proteins Gs and G12. A unique type of coupling, termed 'inverse coupling' is known to occur between the 5-HT7 receptor and the Gs protein. The aim of our research was to determine whether G12 can also undergo this kind of coupling. We found that the G12 protein has a surprisingly lower mobility than Gs implying a specific interaction with a membrane domain or another membrane-localized protein. For both G proteins, we were unable to detect their inverse coupling with the 5-HT7 receptor at room temperature. Our findings indicate peculiar differences in G protein mobility and emphasize the importance of temperature for studies of interactions between G proteins and G protein-coupled receptors. Náplní této diplomové práce je analýza vybraných her amerického dramatika Edwarda Albeeho zaměřená na psychologickou analýzu jednání jednotlivých postav a jejich rodinných a partnerských vztahů. Práce v úvodu představí osobnost a charakterizuje tvorbu Edwarda Albeeho v kontextu jeho doby. Teoretickým východiskem práce je seznámení s tvůrci absurdního dramatu a přiblížení hlavních prvků absurdního divadla ve vztahu k filosofii existencialismu a jejím představitelům s důrazem na význam komunikace a hledání individuální identity ve filosofii existencialisty Karla Jasperse. Jádrem práce je analýza vybraných her z hlediska rodinné a partnerské krize. Na příkladech konkrétních postav je zkoumáno téma ztráty a hledání identity a jeho souvislost s odcizením a absencí významu v soukromých i společenských vztazích. This thesis aims to analyze selected plays by the American playwright Edward Albee, focusing on the psychological analysis of individual characters and their family and partner relationships. The thesis introduces Edward Albee, his life, and the characteristics of his work in the context of his time. The theoretical background presents the writers of the Theatre of the Absurd and its main elements in relation to the philosophy of existentialism and its representatives, emphasizing the importance of communication and the search for individual identity in the philosophy of existentialist Karl Jaspers. The core of the thesis analyzes selected plays in terms of family and partnership crises. The theme of loss, search for identity, and its relation to alienation and the absence of meaning in personal and social relationships is explored through the examples of specific characters.

Dientamoeba fragilis je kosmopolitně rozšířený střevní prvok, přičemž prevalence závisí na studované kohortě lidí a použitých diagnostických metodách. Jeho role v lidském zdraví zůstává nejasná především kvůli velmi malému počtu studií zaměřených na populaci, která netrpí zažívacími obtížemi. Hlavním cílem této studie bylo rozšířit znalosti o epidemiologii prvoka D. fragilis u zdravých lidí a jejich zvířat v České republice. Dientamoeba fragilis is a cosmopolitan intestinal protist colonizing the human gut with varying prevalence depending on the cohort studied and the diagnostic methods used. Its role in human health remains unclear mainly due to the very sporadic number of cross-sectional studies in gut-healthy populations. The main objective of this study was to expand knowledge of the epidemiology of D. fragilis in gut-healthy humans and their animals in the Czech republic.

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na memoáry amerických veteránů z války ve Vietnamu. Pomocí analýzy vybraných děl je představen jejich jedinečný pohled a osobní zkušenost s touto válkou. V této diplomové práci je poukázáno na trauma a stres kterému byli mladí lidé vystaveni. Poukazuje také na psychologické dopady války na jednotlivce a zvládání dopadů pomocí návykových látek. Zároveň se tato práce zabývá kritice války ve Vietnamu, čemuž přispěla média, která umožnila přenést svědectví o hrůzách do domů obyvatel v USA a v celém světě. Tato svědectví však byla často upravována tak aby oslavovala americkou vojenskou sílu a bagatelizovala lidskou cenu války. This thesis focuses on the memoirs of American veterans of the Vietnam War. Through the analysis of selected works, their unique perspective and personal experience of this war are presented. This thesis highlights the trauma and stresses the young men were exposed to, as well as the psychological effects of war on individuals and coping with the effects through the use of addictive substances. Furthermore, this thesis examines the criticism of the Vietnam War, which has been aided by the media that has allowed testimonies of the horrors to be brought into the homes of people in the US and around the world. However, these testimonies have often been edited to glorify American military power and downplay the human cost of war.
