Determination of C-14 in leaf samples from the vicinity of nuclear power plants
Světlík, Ivo; Tomeš, Marek; Brabcová, Kateřina; Michálek, V.; Tomášková, Lenka
2004 - English
Carbon-14 is a radionuclide with global occurrence and partly natural origin. This radionuclide is a pure beta emitter with half-live 5730 years. The greatest present artificial source of radiocarbon are effluents from nuclear energy facilities, even though it is minor contribution in comparison with natural production. From all radionuclides released by Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) with Light Water Pressurized Reactor (LWPR) during normal operation, radiocarbon is responsible for major collective effective dose. During 2002 and 2003 samples of biota were collected in NPPs Temelín and Dukovany vicinity (both NPPs have only LWPR) and in reference background localities. Received results are compared and discussed in the point of view of NPPs influences on C-14 amount in the environment of close vicinity Uhlík-14 je radionuklidem globálně se vyskytujícím radionuklidem částečně přirozeného původu.

2004 - English
Presented work deals with theoretical analysis of deposited energy distribution as a function of sensitive volume dimensions. As an input data, particle tracks simulated using the MC code TRIOL are used. The frequence and dose lineal energy distributions calculated for spherical sites of 3, 30, and 1000 nm diameters for electrons, protons, alfa particles are presented and discussed.

Monte Carlo modeling of radiolytic damage of DNA bases
Kozelka, Jakub; Běgusová, Marie
2004 - English
An attempt to explain differences in measured yields of modified bases determined in free bases and in the double stranded DNA is made with help of theoretical calculations. A theoretical model is applied to predict yields of reactions of the most important radiolytic product, OH• radical, with individual nucleobases, nucleosides and short DNA oligomers. The relation between spatial limitations for radical approach to particular reaction sites within DNA and the yields of damaged bases is discussed.

Response of track-etch based let spectrometer to high energy protons
Jadrníčková, Iva; Spurný, František
2004 - English
Risk from ionizing radiation depend both on the radiation quantity and the radiation quality. The radiation quality is characterized by the methods and the procedures of microdosimetry. Basic experimental microdosimetry approach is based on the use of tissue equivalent proportional counters. However, in some cases their use can be compromised, for example at high dose rates and/or in the presence of very intense low LET component in the radiation field to be characterized. For such purposes, the microdosimetry method based on a polyallyldiglycolcarbonate (PADC) chemically etched track-etch detectors (TED) was developed Nebezpečí z ionizujícího záření závisí jak na kvantitě tak i na kvalitě záření. Kvalita záření je charakterizována metodami a postupy mikrodozimetrie.

Contribution to onboard spacecraft dosimetry and microdosimetry
Spurný, František
2004 - English
Onboard spacecraft radiation fields are composed mostly high energy charged particles with rather important component of heavier particles with high linear energy transfer (LET). Their biological effects are still not fully known, the studies of dosimetric and microdosimetric studies can therefore contribute significantly to deeper knowledge of effects mentioned. We started such studies many years ago. In this contribution results obtained onboard spacecraft during several last years are presented Radiační pole na palubě kosmické lodi jsou tvořena většinou vysokoenergetickými nabitými částicemi s dosti důležitým podílem těžších částic s vysokým lineárním přenosem energie (LET). Jejich biologické účinky nejsou ještě úplně známé. Studia dozimetrických a mikrodozimetrických studií mohou proto významně přispívat k hlubšímu pochopení zmíněných účinků.

Bent perfect crystal (BPC) monochromator at the monochromatic focusing condition
Choi, YN.; Kim, S. A.; Mikula, Pavol; Vrána, Miroslav; Kim, C.H.; Lee, P.
2004 - English
Elastically bent perfect crystal of Si was successfully tested as neutron monochromator in the geometrical conditions for monochromatic focusing. Monochromatic focusing then permits measurements on single crystals as well as polycrystalline samples in the so called parallel and antiparallel settings with the equivalent resolution.

Fabrication of periodic stripes based on self-organization of Ni and C60
Vacík, Jiří; Naramoto, H.
2003 - English
Fabrication of the self-organized mesoscopic stripe system induced by co-deposition of C60 and Ni on the MgO(001) substrate is reported. It was found that a periodic array of stripe domains is formed if specific deposition kinetics is applied. As a possible mechanism of the stripe formation a step-wise relaxation of the internal stress accumulated in the hybrid composite of the immiscible Ni and C60 (a-C) phases is suggested.

Electron-positron pair production in nuclear matter - first data from HADES

2002 - English
Study of hadron properties inside nuclear matter at normal and high temperatures and baryon densities represents one of important topics of the present nuclear research. Several models predict change of effective masses and widths of hadrons due to the chiral symmetry restoration at extreme conditions of the nuclear matter. Existing experimental data do not allow unambiguous conclusions with respect to medium modifications due to the limited invariant mass resolution and separation. To improve and extend the existing experimental evidence the new High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer HADES was build at GSI, Darmstadt.
