Pre-service and in-service teacher training: the use of technology in the greek educational system
Papadiamantopoulou, Maria; Papadiamantopoulou, Charikleia; Armakolas, Stefanos; Gomatos, Leonidas
2016 - English
In the contemporary educational setting more and more educators both pre-service and in-service are trying to follow technological advances by integrating them to their educational style. Despite the continuous increase of technological resources that teachers can utilize during instruction along with the efforts made by the Greek educational system to establish more conducive conditions for a computer-centered learning in both primary and secondary education, limited research exists to date regarding the use of technology by computer-literate teachers, let alone the intention of technology use by computer-literate pre-service teachers. Therefore, this study examines the use of technology by pre-service and in-service Greek educators for professional purposes. Results show that pre-service teachers intend to use technology for future professional reasons in a greater degree than in-service teachers actually do, while some aspects of pre-service (Student 1 and Delivery) and in-service (Student 1, Student 2, Student3, Communication and grouping variable Student) teacher technology use are affected by their age and teaching domain. Keywords: výuka; technologie; vzdělávací systém; teaching; technology; educational system Available in the ZČU Library.

Mental health risk, safety, and the lost soul
Buckingham, Christopher; Adams, Ann; Ahmed, Abu
2016 - English
Introduction: People’s lives depend on mental-health problems being recognised at an early stage so that risks such as suicide and harm to others can be detected and appropriately managed. This was the motivation for the GRiST web-based decision support system. It was developed to bring mental-health expertise into the community so that people can detect risks even if they do not have specialist mental-health training themselves. Methods: The research started in 2002 using a mixture of methods, including interviews, thematic analysis represented by mind maps, focus groups, and action research, all realised within the evolving GRiST software. Results: The GRiST web version was adopted in earnest from 2010. It has now accumulated nearly one million risk assessments from practitioners in specialist mental-health services. The latest research has reached out to people in the community by providing a new self-assessment version, myGRaCE. People can use myGRaCE to help understand their own mental health problems, find out where the main issues and risks reside, and create a comprehensive report that helps them receive appropriate support. Conclusions: The paper describes the development of GRiST and how it has tried to shift the focus from organisations to the individual. Pressure to constrain risk evaluation to include only risk-specific symptoms has been resisted because the prevailing context and long-term causes are all fundamental to detecting and managing risks. The whole person has to be understood: body and soul. Keywords: decision support; GRiST; mental health; myGRaCE; risk assessment Available in digital repository of UPCE.

An approach to the machining of hard coatings prepared by laser cladding and thermal spraying
Carou, Diego; Řehoř, Jan; Vilček, Igor; Houdková-Šimůnková, Šárka
2015 - English
Thermal spraying and laser cladding are widely used in industry for different coating applications. The use of these techniques usually requires a finishing post-process. However, the characteristics of these coatings, such as their high hardness, make difficult to achieve satisfactory results with conventional machining processes. The present study provides a description of the main characteristics of the laser cladding and thermal spraying processes. For machining of these coatings, conventionally, grinding is the first option selected. However, modern industries require gaining flexibility and improving their productivity. Thus, other alternatives such as milling or turning need to be assessed. In this sense, in the last section, several experimental investigations on the machining of WC-Co and Stellite coatings are presented. These studies can bring some insights to face the machining of hard coatings prepared by the laser cladding and thermal spraying techniques. For instance, they can help in the selection of the cutting parameters and provide interesting results on the use of different tool materials and tool geometries. Keywords: nátěry; laserové obložení; obrábění; žárové stříkání; WC-Co; coatings; laser cladding; machining; thermal spraying; WC-Co Available in digital repository of ZČU.
