Bribery environment and firm performance: evidence from Central and Eastern European countries
Hanousek, Jan; Kochanova, A.
2014 - English
We examine the relation between bureaucratic corruption and firm performance in CEE countries. While previous research uses data from BEEPS, which suffers from excessive non-reporting of corporate performance, we combine reliable firm financials from the Amadeus database with information on bribery practices from BEEPS. We show that differing consequences of corruption found in previous studies could be explained by the corruption environment in which a firm operates. Basically, higher mean corruption is associated with lower performance, while higher dispersion appears to facilitate firm performance. A detailed analysis is conducted by firm sector and size, and countries’ institutional environments. Keywords: bureaucratic corruption; firm bribing behavior; firm performance Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Identifying flip floppers: changing attitudes towards suicide bombing in the Middle East
Malečková, Jitka; Kovač, Dejan
2014 - English
Existing literature on attitudes towards terrorism is mainly based on a cross sectional analysis of data, providing insights in the differences among countries. This paper examines changes in public opinion on terrorism over time, utilizing the PEW Survey data on at titudes towards suicide bombing in the Middle East (specifically Egypt and Pakistan) from 2004 to 2011. Give n the lack of panel data, it uses the Markov chain methodology to compare changes in the distribution of people who approve of terrorism in order to identify specific demograp hic groups within a country that have a higher probability of switching between approval and disapproval of suicide bombing. Predicting future evolutio n of terror ism approval helps to identify outliers in the data. Year to year country level changes in approval of terrorism are divided into different subgroups to investigate whether the change is on aggregate level for the whole country or whether specific demograp hic groups are triggering the changes. The results of this research can inform policies aimed at reducing the rates of terrorism approval among specific demographic groups. Does the study abroad experience affect attitudes towards other nationalities?
Cahlíková, Jana
2014 - English
Every year, millions of people relocate to a foreign country for school or work. This research provides evidence of how such international experience shifts preferences and stereotypes related to other nationalities. I use participation in the Erasmus study abroad program as a source of variation in international experience. Students who are ready to participate in the Erasmus program are chosen as a control group for students who have returned from studies abroad. Individuals make decisions in a Trust Game and in a Triple Dictator Game to decompose changes to statistical discrimination from changes to taste-based discrimination. Results show that while students do not differentiate between partners from Northern and Southern Europe in the Trust Game prior to an Erasmus study abroad, students who have returned from Erasmus studies abroad begin to exhibit less trust towards partners from the South. Behavior towards other nationalities in the Triple Dictator Game is not affected by the Erasmus study experience. Overall, the results suggest that participants learn ab out cross-country variation in cooperative behavior while abroad and therefore statistical discrimination increases with international experience. Keywords: discrimination; inter-group contact; trust Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Every vote counts: evidence on corruption culture peer effects from representatives' voting attendance
Lichard, Tomáš; Žúdel, Branislav
2013 - English
In this paper we study the effect of peers and culture on corrupt behavior. We use the European Parliament (EP) as a natural laboratory, as Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) face the same institutional setting, however they differ in corruption culture due to different nationalities. The research question is whether and to what extent the corrupt behavior among MEPs from old EU member states changes after they interact with the MEPs from new EU member states who entered the European Parliament in 2004. We study this question by analyzing the patterns of shirking behavior, as MEPs recieve a per diem compensation for every day she signs the attendance sheet. Keywords: corrupt behavior; European Parliament; Corruption Perception Index Available at various institutes of the ASCR
