Elimination Voltammetry with Linear Scan: Advantages and Disadvantages
Navrátil, Tomáš; Trnková, L.; Hrdlička, Vojtěch; Li, X.
2023 - English
Elimination voltammetry with linear scan (EVLS) represents an almost traditional\nmathematical method that helps to obtain additional and detailed information about the recorded\nelectrochemical signals and therefore, to better understand the analyzed systems. Although it\nhas been substantially developed and expanded during its existence of more than a quarter of a\ncentury and has found many areas of application, like any other mathematical and experimental\nmethod, it exhibits several advantages and disadvantages. In this contribution, we summarize\nits strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, as well as threats.\n

Influence of recreational activities on the distribution of forest wild boar rooting
Drimaj, J.; Balková, M.; Špoula, J.; Kamler, J.; Mikulka, O.; Plhal, R.; Homolka, Miloslav
2023 - English
The wild boar is a widely distributed and locally very numerous animal. The same is true in the conditions of Central Europe. Outside the growing season, it concentrates in forests, where it also actively searches for food sources. During this activity, it disturbs the soil surface, thereby significantly affecting the dynamics of the ecosystem. From an economic point of view, it limits the natural renewal of tree species, but from an ecological point of view, it changes habitat conditions and thus helps to increase biodiversity. Factors influencing the distribution of rooting across forest stands may be different. In this paper, we focused on the human factor and its influence on the rooting activity of wild boar in the Hodonínská Dúbrava, National natural monuments.

2023 - English
NIVB Meeting 2023 – the second meeting of the National Institute of Virology and Bacteriology (NIVB) in Kutná Hora on 2. 10. – 5. 10. 2023 will be again after one year an opportunity to meet the participating teams, discuss excellent science, establish collaborations, and present the progress of the project to the members of the International Scientific Advisory Board. Thanks to funding from the Czech Economic Recovery Plan, a number of important results have already been published in high impact journals. Several networking workshops have been organized and scientific collaborations have been established. The meeting in Kutná Hora is therefore a summary of all that has happened in the project over the past year. The main goal of the NIVB is to facilitate cooperation between 30 participating research teams from 8 Czech research institutions, and this goal is gradually being achieved. The NIVB acts as a common communication platform to discuss the desired cooperation of the NIVB research teams, especially those that have not had much contact so far due to their inter-institutional, interdisciplinary or inter-regional distance.\nWe thank all the participants who contributed to the meeting with 30 oral presentations and 67 posters. The NIVB 2022 meeting had the ambition to launch a new series of annual meetings dedicated to virology and bacteriology, and NIVB 2023 fulfils this ambition and continues to aim to inform the wider scientific community about new developments, trends and issues in these disciplines.

Mathematical Modeling of Heat and Mass Transfer in a Rotary Kiln
Kozakovič, M.; Čada, J.; Kokavcová, A.; Havlica, Jaromír; Huchet, F.
2022 - English
The main objective of this research was to compare the results of the proposed 1D transport model with numerical simulations of mass transport in a direct-heat rotary kiln at laboratory scale. Another objective was to investigate the effect of the number of flights on the formation of an active particle surface in the airborne phase, which enables efficient heat transport. The studied rotary kiln is a low-angle cylinder with a length of 0.5 meter and a diameter of 0.108 meter with regularly arranged flights on the inside. The heat is transported into the rotary kiln by hot air at the inlet. The load in the rotary kiln consists of spherical particles with 1 millimeter diameter. The rotary kiln rotation speed is 21.5 rpm. For each simulation, 20 rotations were performed. The Discrete Element Method implemented in an open-source code LIGGGHTS was used for simulations.Efficient heat transfer is made possible primarily by the large number of particles in the airborne phase, which are heated by the warm air blowing in. To begin with, the number of flights and their geometry were found to be a key parameter controlling the amount of particles in the gaseous regime. It was also found that an area in the right part of the base of the cylinder is formed which is not reached by particles from the flights. This phenomenon is due to the dynamics of particle transport, as the particles are not maintained in the active phase and move rapidly towards the load due to gravity. In conclusion, the effect of this zone is negative, as hot air flows through it without resistance, preventing the system from heating effectively.

Parallel Determination of Particulate Ammonium by Using a Continuous Aerosol Sampler and Cascade Impactor
Alexa, Lukáš; Hlaváčková, H.; Cigánková, Hana; Mikuška, Pavel
2022 - English
Ammonia is a significant gaseous pollutant present in the atmosphere. As a neutralizing agent of acidic species ammonia forms particle-phase ammonium (NH4+) salts and contributes thus to formation of secondary atmospheric aerosols (Harrison and Jones, 1995). Aerosols (particulate matter, PM) are responsible for many negative effects on environments and health risks to human. The diameter of PM has significant impact on their environmental exposure, where the decreasing particle size increases the adverse health effects. The ultrafine particles hence play a major role in adverse impact on human health (Ryer-Powder, 1991). Presented paper describes the use of the novel continuous aerosol sampler for online, and a commercial cascade impactor for offline, determination of NH4+ in ambient air.
