Improving Conditioning of hp-FEM
Vejchodský, Tomáš; Šolín, Pavel
2007 - English
We present the problem of choice of higher-order basis functions for hp-version of the finite element method (hp-FEM) with respect to the condition number of the resulting stiffness matrix. We compare numerically the condition numbers for several popular sets of basis functions. We show that the best conditioning have the basis functions that are orthogonal in the energetic sense on the reference element. Moreover, any two sets of basis functions with this property have identical condition number of both stiffnes and mass matrices.

Stochastic Equations and Stochastic Methods in Partial Differential Equations
Maslowski, Bohdan
2006 - English
In the first part of the paper, basic notions of stochastic analysis and probability theory are recalled, including the concept of stochastic integration, and some basic results of the theory of partial differential equations are reviewed. The second part of the paper is a review of applications of stochastic analysis techniques in deterministic PDE theory. The last part contains a brief introduction to stochastic PDEs and other stochastic infinite dimensional systems. První část práce obsahuje úvod do stochastické analýzy včetně připomenutí základních pojmů teorie pravděpodobnosti, vybudování stochastického integrálu a uvedení základních výsledků o stochastických parciálních rovnicích. Třetí část stručně pojednává o stochastických parciálních diferenciálních rovnicích a jiných nekonečně-rozměrných systémech.

Mathematical Models of Hydraulic Systems, Examples, Analysis
Straškraba, Ivan
2006 - English
The purpose of this contribution is to describe some phenomena arising in hydraulic systems. By a hydraulic system we call a network of tubes, pumps, valves, accumulators and other elements designed to fulfil certain function, for example pumping water from one tank to another. To quantify the fluid flow through the system in question we use fundamental physical principles, namely conservation of mass, momentum and energy. In pipes it leads to Navier-Stokes equations simplified with regard to the special properties of the flow. For description of the fluid flow through other hydraulic elements different models are used which must be identified by the help of experiments performed on an appropriately designed test ring. Účelem tohoto příspěvku je popsat některé jevy vznikající v hydraulických systémech. Hydraulickým systémem nazýváme sítˇ potrubí, čerpadel, ventilů, akumulátorů a dalších elementů navržené ke splnění určitých funkcí, např. čerpání vody z jedné nádrže do druhé.

Shape functions for hierarchic Hermite elements
Segeth, Karel
2006 - English
In the contribution we derive a hierarchic basis for arbitrary order Hermite finite elements in one spatial dimension. We show that this basis has optimal conditioning properties for the resulting discrete algebraic problem and optimal local (projection based) interpolation propertics. The approach shoum in this contribution shall be the basic tool for design of quality H.SUP.2-conforming elements for beam and plate bending problems.

Finite Element Approximation of Boundary Layers
Segeth, Karel; Šolín, Pavel
2006 - English
The numerical solution of convection-diffusion problems with a dominant role of convection plays important role in many scientific and engineering applications, such as viscous flow, fluid-structure interaction transport models, and others. These problems typically exhibit steep gradients, e.g., in the vicinity of solid walls, which are called boundary layers. In this study we investigate the potential of the hp-FEM to facilitate the numerical treatment of this class of problems. Numerické řešení úloh konvekce a dufuze s převahou konvekce hraje důležitou roli v mnoha vědeckých a technických aplikacích.
