Testing for gender discrimination: exploring the link between firm performance and its share of female employees

Gender wage gap decompositions provide useful gender policy diagnostics, but are not well designed to provide a direct test of the presence of gender discrimination. One type of such test proposed in the literature is based on the link between firm-specific economic performance and its share of female employees. In this paper, I explore this link using a newly available database covering several hundred Czech firms in 2002. Dekompozice rozdílu ve mzdách podle pohlaví poskytuje užitečnou diagnostiku pro genderovou politiku, ale není sestavena tak, aby umožňovala přímý test přítomnosti diskriminace pohlaví. Jeden typ takového testu nabízený v literatuře je založen na vztahu mezi firemním ekonomickým výkonem a jejím podílu ženské zaměstnanosti. V této práci zkoumám tento vztah využívajíc nově dostupnou databázi zahrnující několik stovek českých firem v roce 2002.

Determinants of exchange rate volatility: the case of the new EU members

This paper analyzes key factors contributing to euro exchange rate volatility in the new EU members - the openness of an economy, the "news" factor, and the exchange rate regime. The TARCH model is employed to model the volatility of exchange rates. Práce analyzuje klíčové faktory, které přispívají k volatilitě směnného kurzu eura v nových členských zemích EU - otevřenost ekonomiky, "news" faktor a směnný režim. K modelování volatility měnového kurzu je použit model TARCH.

The paper is motivated by the current process of liberalization of the electricity market of the European Union (EU). Bidding behavior and outcomes of auctions is examined under condition when the privileged bidder, owns a part of the auctioneer. Práce je motivována současným procesem liberalizace trhu s elektřinou v Evropské unii. Licitační chování a výsledky aukcí jsou zkoumány za podmínek, kdy jeden privilegovaný licitátor vlastní část dražitele.

In this paper we extend the analysis of optimal monetary policy rules in terms of stability of the economy, started by Evans and Honkapohja (2003), to the case of heterogeneous learning. V této práci rozšiřujeme analýzu optimálních pravidel monetární politiky v podmínkách stability hospodářství, kterou započali Evans a Honkapohja (2003), na případ heterogenního učení.
