Exploring the Functioning of Peer-to-peer Online Marketplace Platforms in France and Germany
PLENZ, Rikarda Dorothea Ariane
2021 - English
Purpose - To study the habits and preferences of P2P online marketplace platform users overall and also with regard to national differences between a German and a French P2P platform in the context of the sharing economy and sustainable consumption. Methodology - A literature review identified specific items of interest related to sustainable consumption on P2P online marketplace platforms in the con-text of the sharing economy. A questionnaire was developed and self-administered by two groups of respondents: users of the German platform eBay Kleinanzeigen and users of the French platform leboncoin. Findings - There were some distinct differences between user preferences and habits of both platforms, as well as overarching findings about general use and motivations for P2P platform use. ANOVA results, Chi-square Tests of Independence, as well as t-tests identified amongst other things connections between sustainable intentions and higher use frequency, which in turn was connected to a stronger willingness to increase product life cycles by buying, selling, gifting or receiving broken things. Research limitations/implications - The samples for this study were assembled through snowball and convenience sampling. This limited sampling frame may affect the generalization of findings. For some of the hypotheses, the sample size was insufficient to obtain conclusive results. Practical implications - Both researchers on the topic of sustainable consumption in the sharing economy and managers the P2P platforms in question, as well as similar platforms or those who plan to implement similar platforms with the goal of sustainability, can benefit from the findings of this study. Value - This research contributes to the literature by studying user behaviour and preferences regarding P2P online marketplace platforms in the context of sustainable consumption. The Influence of Cross-Border Cooperation on the Competitiveness of Euroregions
FRIEDRICHS, Marco Jerome
2021 - English
This master's thesis analyses the influence of cross-border cooperation on the competitiveness of Euroregions by means of a comparative case study of two selected Euroregions: the Greater Region at the intersection of the borders between the states of Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany, and the Euregio Egrensis, covering territories of the Czech Republic and the three German Länder Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia. The research objective raised first and foremost two questions: How to measure the influence of cross-border cooperation and how to measure the competitiveness of (Euro)regions? This thesis is therefore divided into two parts. First, the key concepts of Euroregions, cross-border cooperation and regional competitiveness are discussed at length as all of them are demanding notions in their own right and their understanding critical for the success of the subsequent comparative case study, which then forms this thesis's second part. 2021 - English
Neskoršie kapitoly obsahujú charakterizáciu dát z ALRNB a databázy AMČR. Na analýzu časovej distribúcie je využitá aoristická analýza a simulácia Monte Carlo. Modelovaná distribúcia je využitá na vyhodnotenie vybraných environmentálnych faktorov a kontinuity sídelných aktivít. The presented work is based on surface artefact collection of the northern transect of the ALRNB programme undertaken over the first half of the 1990s. The study area located in north-western Bohemia is delimited by a transect of 13 by 32 km. The results of the ALRNB programme are compared to the general archaeological record represented by AMČR database. Attention is focused on the theory and history of surface artefact collection and publications concerning the ALRNB programme. Later chapters include characterisation of the ALRNB and AMČR record. Aoristic analysis and Monte Carlo simulation are utilised to analyse temporal distribution. Modelled distribution is used to evaluate selected environmental factors and continuity of settlement activity. Forming Identity in Jennifer Egan's Novels
KOUKLÍKOVÁ, Tereza
2021 - English
V praktické části se práce zabývá konkrétními romány Eganové, Look at Me, The Keep, A Visit from the Goon Squad a Manhattan Beach, a skrze podrobnou analýzu ukazuje, jak v nich s tímto konceptem pracuje. Za pomoci intepretace se snaží postihnout podstatu identit postav, existuje-li, a částečně odpovědět tak i na to, jakou povahu má dnešní americká tvorba. This diploma thesis focuses on the question of identity and its formation in the novels of the contemporary American author, Jennifer Egan. At first, it characterizes the concept of identity in literature in relation to literary characters, and it attempts to define the term as such. After the introduction, it moves to situating the concept in particular literary periods, with an emphasis on the context in which the writer has built her career of a successful novelist and in which there is a continuation of postmodern heritage on the one hand and the emergence of contemporary novelistic writing that is sometimes called "post-postmodernism" on the other hand. In the practical part, the thesis examines selected Egan's novels, Look at Me, The Keep, A Visit from the Goon Squad a Manhattan Beach, and thoroughly analyses how she deals with the topic. By a method of close-reading and interpretation, it aims to capture the essence of characters' identities, if there is any, and subsequently to identify the nature of today's American fiction. Keywords: Jennifer Egan; post-postmodernismus; identita; self; čas; paměť; technologie; současná americká literatura Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

The Problem of Translation Equivalence: Analysis of the Czech Translation of the Book The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson
ŠTĚPÁNKOVÁ, Sabina
2021 - English
Tato diplomová práce na téma "The Problem of Translation Equivalence: Analysis of the Czech Translation of the Book The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson" si klade za cíl aplikovat teoretické metody hodnocení kvality překladu na český překlad thrilleru Pohřešuje se prezident, který byl Obcí překladatelů zvolen nejhorším překladem roku 2018. Na základě přístupu k translatologické analýze, který ve svém díle představila Bakerová (2011), v kombinaci s kontrastivními principy hodnocení kvality překladu popsanými u Zehnalové et al. (2015), byl anglický zdrojový text společně s českým překladem Ondřeje Duhy podroben detailní analýze z hlediska dvouúrovňové monolingválně-bilingvní metody hodnocení překladu. Zjištěné překladové chyby byly následně rozděleny do pěti kategorií totožných s jednotlivými úrovněmi jazykového systému. Jakožto výsledek tohoto výzkumu tato diplomová práce stručně představuje pět oblastí potenciálně nebezpečných z hlediska překladových chyb. Konkrétně se jedná o oblast lexikální, ekvivalenci na úrovni slovních spojení, gramatický systém, prostředky textové ekvivalence a pragmatické vztahy uvnitř textu. Práce dále nastíní běžně užívané překladatelské strategie používané k dosažení maximální možné míry ekvivalence v těchto oblastech. Teoretický rámec práce je následně doplněn praktickými příklady v podobě vzorků jazykového materiálu vybraných z českého překladu. Tyto příklady poukazují na špatné využití zmíněných překladatelských strategií a nabízejí alternativní řešení zohledňující socio-kulturní a socio-politické poměry zdrojového textu. This M.A. thesis entitled "The Problem of Translation Equivalence: Analysis of the Czech Translation of the Book The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson" aims to apply the translation quality assessment approach on the Czech translation of the thriller The President is Missing which was voted the worst translation of the year 2018 by the Czech Literary Translators' Guild. By employing Baker's (2011) approach towards the translation analysis in combination with the contrastive principles of TQA as presented by Zehnalová et al. (2015), the English source text along with the Czech target text translated by Ondřej Duha was carefully analysed from the point of view of the two-level monolingual-bilingual quality assessment. The translation errors discovered during the analysis were divided into five categories corresponding with the respective levels of language. As a result, this thesis briefly presents five areas of possible translation pitfalls - namely individual lexical units, equivalence above the word level, grammar, means of textual equivalence and pragmatic relations within the text - along with the commonly used translation strategies used for overcoming them. Subsequently, the theoretical framework is complemented by practical examples in the form of data samples extracted from the Czech target text. These examples present instances of an unsuccessful employment of the recommended translation techniques as well as an alternative translation solution taking into consideration the socio-cultural and socio-political relations of the source text. Keywords: hodnocení kvality překladu; překladová ekvivalence; lexikální ekvivalence; ekvivalence na úrovni slovních spojení; gramatická ekvivalence; textová ekvivalence; pragmatická ekvivalence Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.
