A Comparison between John Steinbeck's Characters - George Milton from 'Of Mice and Men' and Mordeen Saul from 'Burning Bright'

2022 - English Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza postav z novel-divadelních her Johna Ernsta Steinbecka 'Of Mice and Men' (1937) a 'Burning Bright' (1950), s hlavním zaměřením na postavy George Miltona a Mordeen Saulové. Nejdříve se práce zaměří na život autora a díla samotná, což je, mimo jiné, důležité i jako základ pro analýzu postav. V rámci této kapitoly se zmíní primárně o motivacích Johna Steinbecka, probere vztah mezi již zmíněnými knihami a životem Johna Steinbecka, a poté se pokusí přiblížit odlišnost těchto děl. Dále následuje samotná analýza postav George Miltona a Mordeen Saulové dvěma způsoby: jejich vnější vzhled, a jejich psychologii a motivaci. Analýza nabízí různá fakta, jako například, že Mordeen a George sdílí jejich verzi Amerického snu s jejich společníky. Toto je dále rozvinuto pro prokázání podobnosti postav jako důkaz, že John Steinbeck používal opakující se charakterové rysy, témata a motivace ve své práci. The main aim of this thesis is the analysis of the characters from John Ernst Steinbeck's play-novelettes 'Of Mice and Men' (1937) and 'Burning Bright' (1950) with a focus on the characters of George Milton and Mordeen Saul. To provide a background for the analysis of the characters, the work first concentrates on the author and the works themselves. This chapter primarily centers on the motivations of John Steinbeck, provides a relation between the books and his life, and discusses the opposite nature of the two works. Subsequently, the work analyses the characters of George Milton and Mordeen Saul in two ways: their outer appearance, and their psychology and motivation. The analysis provides various facts, such as that Mordeen and George both share their version of the American dream with their companions. This is further developed to establish the similarities of the characters to prove that John Steinbeck had employed recurring character traits, themes, and motivations for his work. 2022 - English Bakalářská práce se zabývá konceptem dvojího života, kontrétně v životě Oscara Wildea a v jeho díle Obraz Dorian Graye. Cílem práce je porozumět dualitě v autorově žitotě, ve vybraném díle a poukázat na jejich souvislost. První část představuje Wildeův život se zaměřením na jeho dualitu. Té si lze všimnout především v udržování dvou vztahů najednou. Jsou zde také popsány potíže spjaté s vedením dvojího života. Druhá část analyzuje typy dualit tří hlavních postav románu, s ústředním zaměřením na hlavního hrdinu Doriana Graye. Různé typy dualit jsou prezentovány prostřednictvím Basilovy homosexuality, veřejného vystupování Lorda Henryho, lišícího se od jeho tajných tuh, a soubojem těla a duše v případě Doriana, jehož dualita je navíc podpořena existencí portrétu. Práce se dále zabývá vývojem Doriana a osobami, které jej mohli ovlivnit včetně jeho dědečka Lorda Kelsa a Lorda Henryho Wottona. The bachelor thesis focuses on the concept of double life, concretely found in Oscar Wilde's life and one of his works - The Picture of Dorian Gray. The aim is to provide an understanding of duality in author's life and in the selected novel and show the connection between them. The first part of the thesis presents Wilde's life with the focus on the duality. His duality can be noticed mainly through leading two relationships at once. There are also shown the difficulties of leading a double life in this section. The second part analyses the types of dualities of the three main characters from the novel, with the main focus on the protagonist Dorian Gray. The different types of dualities are presented through Basil's homosexuality, Lord Henry's public image that differs from his secret desires, and lastly through the fight of the body and soul in the case of Dorian. The duality of Dorian is even supported by the existence of the portrait. Further, the thesis discusses the Dorian's development and how certain people could influence who he has become, including his grandfather Lord Kelso and Lord Henry Wotton. Multispecies analysis of the role of epigenetic factors in aging

2022 - English The following thesis provides the results of a multispecies analysis that was done to identify expression patterns of 209 genes encoding epigenetic factors that are associated with aging and longevity. The first part of the analysis investigated changes in the gene expression with aging for the long-lived species human and naked mole rat and the short-lived species mouse and rat. The second part aimed to further analyse the baseline expression levels of these genes in the long-lived species bowhead whale, human, blind mole rat and naked mole rat when compared to the short-lived species rat, mouse, marmoset and guinea pig. To achieve this, a number of Python scripts were developed, investigating the expression of epigenetic factors that potentially contribute to longevity. Teoretická část práce vycházející ze sekundárních zdrojů představí autora a jeho tvorbu v kontextu žánru (autorské) pohádky a soudobé literární tvorby. Popíše typy humoru a komiky se zřetelem k jejich využití v dětské literatuře a také jejich uplatnění v díle Oscara Wildea. Praktická část se zaměří na Wildeovu pohádkovou tvorbu, kde lokalizuje a popíše použité prvky humoru a komiky a provede analýzu vybraných ukázek textů. This bachelor thesis examines the use of humour in the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde, which is usually overlooked in these texts. The theoretical part based on secondary sources introduces the author and his output in the context of the authored fairy tale genre and its contemporary literary works. It describes different kinds of humour and comic with regard to their use in children's literature and their use in the works of Oscar Wilde. The practical part focuses on Wilde's fairy tales, where it localizes and describes the elements of humour and comic used and analyses selected parts of the text. This bachelor thesis introduces the case of Jack the Ripper, taking place in the autumn of 1888 in London and its interpretation in The Lodger by Mare Belloc Lowndes focused on the influence of the press. The theoretical part puts the topic in the historical context of Victorian England and states the practice of contemporary police and press. Furthermore, the thesis informs about the case itself, including the victims, the suspects and other necessities. At the same time, the thesis involves literary facts about the book and the author. The practical part describes the plot of the book, compares the real-life case with its interpretation, and proves the inspiration by using specific examples. Hlavním zaměřením práce je popsání toho, jak je Andersonville vyobrazen v historické knize MacKinlay Kantora a dalších knihách zabývajících se tímto tématem. Tento knižní popis je poté porovnáván s filmovým zpracováním Johna Frankenheimera, a je tudíž porovnáno, jak se tyto dvě zpracování sobě podobají či liší, a jak jsou obě daná zpracování věrná historickým faktům. This bachelor thesis focuses on Andersonville. This location served as a concentration camp of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. The main focus of the thesis is the description of how Andersonville was described in the historical novel of MacKinlay Kantor, and other books written about this subject. This description from the books is then compared to the movie made by John Frankenheimer, it is then noted what are the similarities or differences of both adaptations and how faithful they are to the historical facts. 2022 - English Bakalářská práce se zabývá obdobím Velkého irského hladomoru v letech 1845-1849. Hlavní pozornost se upíná k přístupu britské vlády k řešení této krize a postoji královny Viktorie. Úvodní část nastíní politické, hospodářské a sociální poměry v Irsku a stav Unie před vypuknutím hladomoru a také představí královnu Viktorii a její vztah k Irsku. Hlavní část práce popíše průběh krize a vysvětlí povahu a cíle vládních intervencí a jejich praktický dopad na situaci postiženého obyvatelstva. Na základě odborných poznatků a dostupných soudobých zdrojů autorka posoudí, jak vnímala tuto, z dnešního pohledu humanitární, katastrofu královna Viktorie a do jaké míry se snažila osobně přispět k jejímu řešení. Práce zmíní také královninu návštěvu Irska v roce 1849, úsilí o stabilizaci poměrů v Irsku v prvních letech po hladomoru a dopad krize na irsko-britské vztahy. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to provide an insight into the circumstances surrounding the Great Famine of 1845-1849. The main focus is on the British government's approach to dealing with this crisis and the attitude of Queen Victoria. The introductory part outlines the political, economic and social conditions in Ireland and the state of the Union before the outbreak of the famine and also introduces Queen Victoria and her relationship to Ireland. The main part of the thesis will describe the course of the crisis and explain the nature and objectives of government interventions and their impact on the situation of the affected population. Drawing on expert findings and available contemporary source, the author will assess how Queen Victoria perceived this, from today's perspective, humanitarian disaster and the extent to which she sought to make a personal contribution to its resolution. The thesis will also mention the Queen's visit to Ireland in 1849, the efforts of the government to stabilise the situation in Ireland in the early years after the Famine, and the impact of the crisis on British-Irish relations.
